Diagnosed with POI at 36. Could it be linked to my son’s severe autism and intellectual disability? (Fragile X?)

Hi everyone,
I am 36 years old and was recently diagnosed with POI (Primary Ovarian Insufficiency). I have three children. I originally agreed to genetic testing to see if my 18-year-old daughter might inherit this, so she could consider freezing her eggs.
However, after a stressful call with my doctor, I started researching and am now completely overwhelmed.
My youngest son (11) has an intellectual disability and Level 3 Autism. He does not have the typical facial features often described online for Fragile X. My middle son (16) also has autistic traits and a split profile (high verbal, lower performance). I myself have ADHD and anxiety. [1]
I just found out that being a Fragile X premutation carrier can cause POI in mothers and can expand into the full Fragile X mutation in sons, causing intellectual disabilities and autism. [1, 2, 3, 4]
How likely is it that my POI and my son’s disability are just a coincidence?
Has anyone else gone through this exact realization after a POI diagnosis?
Is it common for children with Fragile X not to have the typical facial features at a young age?
I’m currently in a lot of emotional distress and honestly terrified of what the genetic test might reveal. I would love to hear your experiences or insights. Thank you.

HRT dosage/recurrence of symptoms

Hi all. I was diagnosed last fall at 36yo. Initial symptoms were fatigue, brain fog, anxiety and hot flashes, and 4 months no period after stopping BC. First estrogen check was 0, with high FSH/LH. All else normal. No autoimmune. I started HRT at 0.025mg estradiol 2x/week and 100mg continuous micro progesterone. Symptoms alleviated so much and follow up labs showed good improvement. FF 5 months, symptoms crept back up, labs showed another dip in estrogen. I upped to 0.05mg patch. Improved again. This was 4 months ago. All the while, I’ve had regular 22-27 day “cycles”. Now, I’m on day 31 and my symptoms (mainly fatigue, brain fog, and anxiety) have been AWFUL this past week. I’m scheduled for labs and upped to 0.1 patch/200 mg progesterone starting tonight. My exhaustion has been at a new low today and I just want to cry. Is this normal? Is it just because I needed this dose adjustment? Please help.

Is it normal to feel like you cant think?

Ive dealt with autoimmune disease for a long time, and nobody every attempts to pinpoint what causes brain fog.

but I literally feel like I cant concentrate my thoughts. I just cant. If I ever attempted to go to college, Id fail.

Im still looking for competent treatment for POI, but if I get my hormones to optimal levels, will that make a difference. I heard someone say it did for them, but he was a man and his issue is testosterone.

Doctor Recommendation

Hi everyone! I’m 22 and was diagnosed with POI in 2024. I’m looking for recommendations for a doctor in Bengaluru, India, who has good experience specifically with POI and can help me navigate my HRT journey long-term.

I’m hoping to find someone who understands POI in younger women and can guide me not just with HRT, but also with things like bone health, overall hormone replacement, monitoring, and long-term health.

If you’ve personally seen a doctor in Bengaluru whom you’d recommend for POI/HRT, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience. Thank you! ❤️

Anyone else experience medical anxiety now?

I thought I was home free with my new dr. I am on HRT, and his treatment has the approval of an endocrinologist...

But today I was anxious, and I think he was frazzled, and my autistic brain missed some cues.... He told me to shut up.

I tried to laugh it off, apologized, and choked back tears. It's the 5th dr who has treated me poorly in some way. One of the first Dr's I saw told me I was crazy and prescribed me what he thought was a corticosteroid for my vaginal atrophy (he accidentally prescribed me vagifem, insisting I didn't need estrogen). Another Dr. yelled at me and told me my autism was making it hard to communicate (I was in tears because she kept insisting I was eating too much high cholesterol food, and that all my symptoms were just anxiety and a secret bad diet). My menopause specialist talked down to me, refused treatment, and dismissed symptoms for many many appointments. A pelvic floor therapist treated me like I was loony and told me catheter safe lidocaine is the only option for painless sex for me. I've had to fight for myself at almost every appointment I've been too... and now my new Dr. just told me to shut up. Also he's looked at my boobs a lot:(

In the last 2 years, I've had 3 good dr. experiences... and I've been to probably 15+ appointments. I was already someone who got a bit nervous for medical stuff, but now my heart hammers on through heart palpitations + advocacy anxiety and I can barely breathe. I know I'm not the easiest patient because of my anxiety and autism... but I don't think I deserve to be yelled at or told to shut up. I don't know how to recover from the trauma from these last 2 years.

I think I'm going to ask my family dr (who referred me to this guy for a consult and treatment) is she'll manage my hormones now that I've seen an endocrinologist and gotten her blessing for high doses of HRT (she was uncomfortable before). If she says no, idk what I'll do. I wish I could just curl up in a ball and never see a dr ever again until I die.

How to find a competent specialist?

Hormone specialists have told me to my face that they wont treat me/test me for estrogen/give me estrogen, as along as I am mensurating/under 40.

Even though my hormone levels say that I am post menopausal (age 29, but hormone levels of a woman in her mid50s), that doesnt matter apparently.

SO I found a Naturopath for BHRT and its not working and their clinic isnt competent either.

Ive consulted with AI, and it looks like I might need to go over the border to mexico for treatment... Which may genuinely be easier than trying to navigate finding care in America.
