Crazy Growth

Was gone for a long weekend out of state and came back to this amazing surprise. I’m sure they were growing before I left but man it felt great seeing all this massive growth when returning home!

First Pepper Harvest (proud mama)

I have always had a "black thumb". I told myself this was my final attempt and decided to try out pepper plants for the first time. They are THRIVING! And I'm thrilled, so I wanted to share. I'm growing Thai dragon, serrano, and bell pepper. Today I harvested some dragon and bell pepper. And also made some Prik Nam Pla with the Thai chillies.

Which variety is this?

What do yall think this pepper is? I was thinking it was habanero but now I’m not quite sure. It is the only one producing fruit like this and I don’t have any seed packs that have this shape/color.

New Grower, Trying Fox Farms

Hi! Growing my peppers on a balcony in zone 7b with direct sunlight for most of the day.

From some posts, saw that growing peppers in raised planters can lead to flushing out nutrients more quickly so I got some fertilizers (Fox Farm Trio). What cadence do people use them at? Do you follow the schedule on their site?

Note: I’m also using miracle gro potting soil, purchased my plants as sprouts, and they’ve been growing well outside for 5ish weeks.

I saved my first seeds last year! "Cross-pollination won't happen to me," I thought, confidently... My serranopeños beg to differ

I 100% only saved seeds from a single jalapeño plant, I didn't even eat any of the serranos (they're a little hot for me tbh). I'll be interested to see how they turn out! Bummer, the plant made really nice pods, big and long and straight

Digging up after season

I planted a couple hot peppers in ground from seed this year, and I was wondering if anyone has had any success digging them up to over-winter in pots. My dad had 2 over-wintered Reapers die this year and he wants some of mine once the cold comes, but I am afraid trying to dig them up will kill them.

TIL about Fish Peppers and how the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade brought them to the US. Used in white sauces to add spice; the light color of the juvenile peppers wouldn’t change the color of the dish. Thought to be extinct until a bag of seeds was discovered in a freezer in ‘95.

I just thought this was a really cool story about Fish Peppers. I’m not sure if this is common knowledge, but I wanted to share.

Believed to be brought to the United States from enslaved persons arriving from Haiti, the fish pepper was utilized in many dishes, mostly seafood or cream based. Younger peppers would begin their life cycle with a nearly white colored exocarp (I think this is the proper term?) so they were preferred to add a desirable spice level without changing the color of the dish.

It was believed to have gone extinct until 1995 when a bag of seeds was discovered in a freezer.

The summary that Wikipedia has on the rediscovery:

““The cultivar was saved from extinction thanks to a barter made by Horace Pippin in the 1940s. Pippin was a Black folk painter who lived in Pennsylvania. He traded seeds to a local beekeeper named H. Ralph Weaver in exchange for Weaver's celebrated bee sting therapy, used to treat Pippin's arthritis. The seeds stayed in the Weaver family freezer for fifty years, until 1995 when Weaver's grandson, William Woys Weaver, discovered the seeds and sent them to the Seed Savers Exchange. The Exchange reconstituted the pepper seeds and cultivated the first fish pepper seedlings in half a century. Since their resurrection, the fish pepper has regained its former popularity and is readily available from seed websites and once again sees regular use in dishes at Mid-Atlantic restaurants.””

What is this yellow powdery substance on my habanero?

It’s started to get nice and sunny where I live so I’ve been bringing my pepper plant out for a hour or two. I brought them in today and noticed this yellow powder substance. Anyone have a clue what it is? Pollen, fungus, mildew?

HELP: what’s damaging my peppers

Hi!

I sprouted some shishito from seed and planted them in grow bags. I also have a couple manganji peppers and a ghost pepper that I overwintered. I am in a subtropical climate that is pretty humid.

So I’ve been noticing that my pepper plants have really deformed new growth. After some research I thought it might be broad mites, so I started spraying sulfur once a week. I’ve sprayed three times and did notice some improvements, but I also spray neem in between my sulfur sprays (I don’t mix them). Please help me identify what is wrong with my pepper plants. I saw some white bugs on two of my plants as well (see image). I can’t tell if it’s broad mites that is my problem or perhaps something like aphids? Eitherway I just sprinkled diatomaceous earth on my plants after seeing the white bugs.

Thanks!

What is this insect on my pepper plant? I’m assuming foe?

What is this little guy and how should I deter it from my pepper plant? It’s only on my Napoleon sweet pepper plant, not my jalepeño pepper plant.
