Folders vs. Tags 📁🏷️

Folders vs. Tags 📁🏷️

Hi Proton team, this question may be coming a little late, given that folders seem to be close to release. Still, it would be interesting to understand the reasoning behind choosing to implement folders rather than tags. There have been a lot of comments about these two features on UserVoice as well as on Reddit. Given that you mentioned in your summer roadmap that introducing folders required some rethinking of the cryptographic model (potentially making them more complex to implement than tags), what ultimately tipped the balance in favor of folders?

On UserVoice, tags are also fairly well positioned in terms of votes among the ideas currently marked as "Under Review". Could we really expect an implementation in the near future?

Why can't we use alphanumerical "PIN"?

Does anyone know why Proton Pass won't allow using a mix of letters and numbers instead of a numerical PIN?
Bitwarden allows that and at least for me makes it feel more secure instead of either having it always unlocked or only using numbers to see my passwords.

Sometimes on iOS the wrong password is shown above the keyboard, so I attempt to click the "Key" icon on the top-right of the keyboard. Instead of pulling up all of my password so that I can auto fill the correct login, it tries to find a passkey...

Maybe I misunderstand how this works, but with other password managers I have used in the past above the keyboard it will show a login that is tied to the specific app or website (on iOS). If the suggestion is wrong then you can hit the key icon and it will take you into a view of the app where you can search through your passwords and select the right one. Once you select it then it gets auto filled into the app or website.

When using Proton Pass this does not happen and I don't see anyway in the Proton Pass pop up to search through all of my passwords, it just searches for a passkey, which I do not have on most of my login items (yet).

Am I doing something wrong or has this not been added yet?

ProtonPass doesn't work anymore

Hello there,

I’m here to ask you two questions about Proton Pass, specifically the Proton Pass Chrome extension.

Am I the only one experiencing these two issues?

The first one is that, despite having the extension pinned, it sometimes doesn’t stay pinned, so I have to manually open the extensions menu to access it.

The second issue is that Proton Pass sometimes simply doesn’t open at all, which means I can’t access my passwords, passkeys, or secure notes. This can be quite problematic.

I’ve already reported these issues to Proton, but unfortunately, they don’t seem to be taking the problem seriously or providing any information about it. I haven’t received any indication that they are aware of these potential bugs or are working on a fix.

Please let me know if I’m the only one experiencing these issues.

Thanks!

Reason #1 to switch to Proton Authenticator. Microslop allowing this is unforgivable

Using Microslop's authenticator app automatically enables passwordless on your account, which means that anyone, anywhere in the world, can try to sign in as you and one wrong press on "yes" instead of "no" hands your whole account over to them.

Literally worse than not having 2FA at all. Bypasses your entire setup!

Switching to Proton Auth was a no brainer tbh

Recovering Proton Pass secondary password

Hi. I have introduced Proton services to my colleague and as it happens - he forgot the second password in Proton Pass on the next day 😂 He wrote an email to support for help, but got no response for 1 week already. Is there any way to recover passwords? Or at least to reset everything?

Proton Pass & Overall Proton Suite

I feel like Bitwarden is the best option for business and AI secrets management. I like Proton Mail and want to use the whole monthly package for all the Proton Services including Proton Pass - but I don’t think I can stop using Bitwarden completely. Has anyone made the full switch to Proton Pass or does anyone still use a secondary password manager like Bitwarden or iCloud too?

I’m highly interested in the overall Proton Suite monthly services Package, have used iCloud, LastPass, and Bitwarden just now very briefly. I finally want to migrate things over and take security seriously - and I’m looking for the best way to do that. I need desktop web browser (Brave Browser), iPhone (Brave), and also Business password and secret management - Bitwarden seemed the best for business. I noticed with the browser plugin for it you have to login to use autofill and it times out after 15min by default - I haven’t experimented with trying to configure this yet. Vs LastPass autofills pretty well (aggressively, sometimes the autofill makes it hard for me to fill things out manually), stays logged in forever by default, and has secure notes, etc - I’d prefer not to use LastPass anymore but it worked fine for desktop web browser usage for me. I used iCloud on iPhone instead of LastPass or a different password manager. I don’t want to rely on one device (Mac/iphone) and use Win 11 more for work anyway

From Bitwarden to ProtonPass

Those who made the jump, how is the experience? I'm currently using Bitwarden but plan on switching sometime soon so currently evaluating my options. The main concerns I have with protonpass are claims about bad auto complete on Android and browser, and how this is part of the proton ecosystem of products and doesn't get enough attention from devs according to some.

Can't we still set Proton as default password manager on MacOS?

I've been looking for a solution to this for ages and finally found this post. Official reply in 2025 was "hopefully this year." Any updates on this?

Or do I just have to switch password managers over one basic macOS integration? Anyone else find this frustrating? It's not a core thing, but it bothers me af, even I barely use it natively anyway.

Asking to upgrade to 1.38.1 even though I am running 1.39.1 (Linux)

Hi,

I am running the deb, latest version downloaded from the website, SHA verified, etc; on Ubuntu. For some reason, it keeps on asking me to upgrade to 1.38.1 even though I am running 1.39.1.

Has anyone else had this?

Thanks

Announcing: The Proton Pass SSH Agent

Do your private SSH keys currently live on disk, encrypted with a passphrase you type once per session, or with no passphrase at all? In both cases, there's now an easier and more secure way.

Proton Pass now has an SSH agent, allowing you to store the key inside your vault instead.

In the SSH Agent section of Settings ⚙ icon → General, tick the Use Proton Pass as SSH agent box to generate a setup command that you can then paste into your terminal.

https://preview.redd.it/ajhk99yw55jh1.png?width=1436&format=png&auto=webp&s=410de4b8921b1937643367123d50d817f2434fdd

Unlock the vault once; no more re-entering a passphrase with every connection, or sessions that die on reboot.

Managing keys becomes a vault action instead of a manual file chore. Easier to keep track of, especially on multiple machines and systems. Gain peace of mind from one less secret exposed on disk.

Solve the one place key management actually breaks down: loose encrypted files scattered across machines, and replace it with one encrypted vault with biometric unlock and access controls.

For the bulk of your SSH work (git, GitHub, GitLab, SSH to servers), using a vault is both cleaner and tighter. Give yourself centralized visibility into which keys are active and where.

Gradually rolling out now to Visionary, B2B Bundles, Pass Professional, Plus, and Family. Desktop only.

PayPal 2FA Code Autofill not working

As the title says, I don’t get any prompt to autofill paypals 2FA code. Which is getting really annoying. It’s been like this for years. I‘m on iOS 26.6. iPhone 15 Pro Max. ProtonPass App Version 1.20.0 (39).

How To Delete Brave Browser Data Except Proton Login

I'm trying out Brave and was wondering if I can delete everything except the Proton Pass Login. I want to clean up most site data but remain logged in to Proton Pass. Anyone have any experience with this?

I imagine deleting the Cookies and other site data will probably blow away Proton, but I thought I would ask.

The Proton Pass Mac App Needs a Dark Mode Style.

All of the other apps in my dock have dark mode styles, it would be great if Proton Pass matched! Please update the app icon style to have a dark mode option.

Thanks for the great app!

Please Implement the Find Menu on Proton Authenticator

it would be great to have the Edit-Find menu implemented like it is on most other Mac apps. I have enough authentication codes that I always need to find them. Much faster and more convenient than clicking in the search field and then finding. Or default the cursor to land in the search field.

1Password ending in November, wanted to plan few things before

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of switching from 1Password to Proton Pass as my subscription is about to end, as they have recently increased their pricing significantly in my country.

For those who have switched from 1Password to Proton Pass, how has the experience been so far?

Does it do everything properly?

I mostly use passkeys, autofill, and store some important documents; that's about it.

One important thing I'm personally looking for is native macOS autofill: is that something Proton Pass is thinking of implementing? If so, is there any rough timeline?

Didn't like Proton Pass, Going back to Bitwarden, how do i take my passkeys back?

I wanted to migrate from bitwarden to protonpass and didn't like it. Now i want to go back, but in the meantime i created some passkeys. Is there any way to get the passkeys out of Protonpass or are they trapped there forever?

Any ideas are welcome.

Edit: Why am I being downvoted?

In case anyone is interested, Reasons i did not stay in Proton Pass:

1- All creation, edited dates, and password history is not imported from Bitwarden into Proton Pass, so data is lost. This is really important for me so i cannot migrate until the import is not fixed. Also according to support this fix is not even in the roadmap so probably won't be coming to Proton Pass anytime soon.
2- One of the main reasons for moving to Proton Pass was being able to search all fields, which Bitwarden does not allow. Turns out Proton Pass also doesn't allow searching the password field. Not sure why they can't make the whole database searchable. (i was trying to search some old passwords and variations of it to see where they are used, as well as other fields within logins)
3- There's no autofill keyboard shortcut in proton pass.
4- Autofill doesn't always work in mobile, i felt it fails more often than Bitwarden does.
