Used car parts

Back when I was younger there was a place called U Pull A Part in Milan that was basically a big lot of totalled vehicles that you could go there, remove a part you needed from the vehicle yourself, and then pay a relatively cheap price for it. I know that place doesn't exist anymore, but is there any place like it around anymore?

This might be something to consider when choosing a veterinarian, and it applies to several that are in the QC.

TL;DR: Many veterinarians are connected to private corporations profiting from pet medications and food, and there are several in the QC.

---

Take this for whatever it is worth, but you might want to consider this when choosing a local vet. I am not discrediting the ones on the list, but there may be a conflict of interest, and it's worth considering. There are several vets that fall into this category that are in the QC. This is not meaning that they are bad vets, just that you should take it in consideration.

----

Due to shifting priorities from animal care toward revenue growth, aggressive treatment plans, and pharmaceutical sales. Private equity firms have increasingly bought veterinary hospitals, emergency clinics, and specialty practices across the United States. In many cases, the clinic keeps its original name, so pet owners may not realize it is owned by a larger corporate network.

Major veterinary companies and private-equity connections include:

  • Mars Incorporated: owns large veterinary chains including:
    • Banfield Pet Hospital
    • VCA Animal Hospitals
    • BluePearl Specialty and Emergency Pet Hospital
  • National Veterinary Associates (NVA): backed by private equity and owns hundreds of clinics and pet resorts across North America.
  • Pathway Vet Alliance: merged into NVA and associated with private-equity expansion.
  • VetCor: backed by investment firms and owns many local veterinary clinics.
  • Southern Veterinary Partners: private-equity-backed operator of hundreds of animal hospitals.
  • Thrive Pet Healthcare: formerly Pathway; backed by investment capital and operates clinics nationwide.
  • Encore Vet Group: another consolidator purchasing independent clinics.
  • Zoetis: while not a clinic owner, it is heavily connected to veterinarians through drug sales, education sponsorships, consulting, and research funding.

Concerns about private-equity involvement include:

  • Pressure to increase profits and sales targets
  • Higher prices for procedures and medications
  • Recommendations for more diagnostics or repeat visits
  • Reduced independence for veterinarians
  • Corporate purchasing agreements with pharmaceutical companies
  • Incentives tied to prescription diets, vaccines, or medications
  • Burnout and staffing cuts

Supporters argue consolidation can also provide:

  • Better technology and equipment
  • Expanded emergency services
  • Shared administrative support
  • Improved recruiting and training
  • Access to specialists

A key issue is transparency: many clinics still appear locally owned even when controlled by national corporations or investment firms, making it difficult for clients to know who ultimately influences policies, pricing, and treatment practices.

veterinarian for senior cat

My cat recently got diagnosed with kidney disease and I’m moving to the area in a couple months. Does anyone have vet recommendations?

Flock camera notice

Not sure how long it's been there, since I don't have a lot of occasion to go that way, but there's a Flock camera aimed north on Division next to the Walgreen's at Five-Points in Davenport.

I checked deflock.me's map, and looks like it was added there 14 days ago.

Let’s compare house insurance costs. Wanting to see what I should be paying.

320k house coal valley first quote was for $3900 seems ridiculous. Deductible would be $2500

Theo’s Java Club Stories

Hey all,

I’m sure plenty of you have memories of hanging out down at Theo’s Java Club in downtown Rock Island.

Were you a degenerate who skipped school to hang out there and smoke cigarettes? Did you fight with Rhonda about too many refills? Did someone write an angry song about you and sing it at open mic night?

I’m helping a friend with a project and am looking for stories.

Thanks!

QC Area Backpacking Recommendations

I'd planned a backpacking trip this Friday through Monday, but the original destination is forecasted to be completely rained out, so I'm looking for alternatives.

Aiming for 8-10 miles per day (roughly 24-30 miles total) and would love a big loop, though I'm open to an out and back or shuttling back to the trailhead if needed. Elevation gain is great, I'm training for some western hiking and want to get climbing miles in.

I've been to Wildcat Den before and that was awesome, something like that but longer would be great if it exists. Also, bonus points for dispersed camping areas. Could even go somewhere further away, we're coming from Peoria and want to keep the drive under 4 hours ideally.

Any trail recommendations are appreciated!

Looking for a roommate:)

Hi! I’m looking for a place to live and interested in teaming up. I tried platforms for roommates search, but had no luck, because there’re not so many people there who have same move in dates there:( I figured I’d have more luck asking here.

About me: I’m a girl (preferably looking for a female roommate but don’t mind teaming up with guys too), I’m in my 20s, respectful, tidy, keep shared spaces clean, easy to get along with:) I drink occasionally (nothing crazy), I don’t smoke, I don’t have pets but don’t mind if you have any. I prefer Iowa side, but can consider Illinois too. Ready to move-in at the beginning of June (but it also can be discussed if you have a bit earlier or later dates).

Looking forward to hearing from you if you’re interested! Thank you

Where can I buy guanciale?

Hi fam!

I’m new to town and was wondering where I can find guanciale. I know I can find it in Chicago but it would love to find it closer. I’m not opposed to driving to Iowa City if there is a good meat market/Italian grocer. Thanks in advance!

Chicago artist coming to Quad Cities 5/22

hey quad cities my name’s josh spinner. i’m an indie rock artist from chicago and i’m coming back to Raccoon Motel on may 22.

honestly not trying to make some annoying “buy tickets!!!” post lol. i care way more about people hearing the music first and deciding if they connect with it.

if you’re into bands like Pinegrove, Noah Kahan and John Mayer, i think you might like what i do.

i’ve been playing around chicago for a long time at rooms like Schubas Tavern, Lincoln Hall and Subterranean and every time we’ve come through quad cities the crowds have been insanely kind to us. genuinely one of my favorite places to play.

trying to make this next show the biggest one yet.

i’ll leave my music and the ticket link here if anyone wants to check it out

Quad Cities as a Transgender Woman.

Hello, I'm in the beginning stages of relocating to Moline/Illinois, but I'd really like some personal experiences. I just have a couple of questions.

Is Moline/QC reasonably safe for a transgender woman? I'm not asking about someone calling me "sir," i am asking if I going to get beaten for going for a morning run. Etc. Etc.

How's the queer community in general in the QC area?

What are some apartments to 100% avoid renting from?

I promise I'm 100% genuine in asking this. I'm not baiting, or trying to get engagement, just simply trying to find a place to relocate that is nearby family.

Here we go again with this guy

Hate giving this guy attention but man does this gimmick get old. Also the comments are about as cringe and boomer slop as you can imagine. Heaven forbid you disagree with him and him and his cronies will blast you all over their pages.

Local enterprise software engineer got laid off….. :)

Not giving any details. But started applying today. LinkedIn. Indeed.

I am surprised at the commutable jobs around. Collins. Delloitte. So many listings.

Any tips for a guy getting himself out there? Java. Cloud. API’s.
