Someone has been rearranging my shoes outside my apartment door for months. Help me figure out who and why.
I have a relatively peculiar "problem" that I genuinely can't figure out, so I'm hoping someone here can help.
I have been living on the 2nd floor of an apartment building for about a year, with 4 apartments per floor. Each apartment door has a small recessed alcove, so you can place a doormat there without it blocking the hallway or escape route. When I get home and my shoes are wet or dirty i like to leave them outside on my mat. since I (F) live alone they are sometimes just scattered randomly across it. Nothing valuable: rain boots, worn-down uggs, basic chucks. And they don't smell either (my boyfriend confirmed).
As soon as my shoes have been outside for more than a day or two, someone (hereafter: the culprit) rearranges them so they are standing upright, leaning neatly against my door frame. this has happened countless times. They've never gone missing or been tampered with in any other way.
I have already ruled out a few suspects. It can't be my boyfriend since it happend plenty of times when he's not around. it can't be a cleaner since the stairwell is never actually cleaned, it's perpetually dirty. And fire safety complaints seem unlikely as a motive since several neighbors have their entire doormats sitting out in the actual hallway, including the guy next to me who had winter boots out there for 4 days straight without anyone touching them, while my shoes were rearranged multiple times in that same period.
One interesting data point: my boyfriends shoes, left next to mine for a day, were also rearranged once, so it's not purely anti-me, or at least not anti-my-shoe-size.
My friends suggested propping my old phone against the peephole to record the hallway, which isn't an option since it's almost certainly illegal in germany. I'm open to other ideas though, ideally ones that don't get me in trouble.
so: any theories on why someone would do this, and how do i catch them?
