Earth Dust

Can someone please explain to me exactly how Earth Dust works in the RWBY universe? I hear it get mentioned in fan-based works more often than in the actual show, so I don't fully know what its effects can do. Can anyone in the FNDM give me all the details?

Like for example, can Earth Dust be infused into your weapons haft/shaft (like for a spear or polearm) to make it basically unbreakable?

RWBY OC Basis: Lu Bu

Fun fact about me: I am a HUGE fan of the band Sabaton. And recently, I have become addicted to their recent song, "A Tiger Among Dragons", which is based on the life of legendary Chinese warrior Lu Bu.

My addiction to this song, coupled with my plan to give Yang Xiao Long Lu Bu's weapon (the Fangtian Huaji) in addition to Ember Celica in my planned RWBY rewrite, has made me realize a question I should have asked the FNDM a LONG time ago.

That question is this: Who here in the RWBY FNDM has created an OC that is based on/inspired by Lu Bu? If you have created such an OC, then I want to hear all the details about them. Their backstory, their personality, their appearance, their weapon(s) and fighting style(s), their Semblance, the whole shebang.

RWBY Reacts To Mythology-Episode 59: The Wizard Of Oz (Images Courtesy Of Forever Classic Games And IFC Center)

Welcome to Episode 59 of "RWBY Reacts To Mythology", FNDM! On today's episode, we have another session where the heroes and villains of Remnant will be reacting to some of their mythological counterparts in our mythology movie theater.

This time around, FNDM, I want to know what you think the reactions and opinions of the RWBY ensemble, especially Ozpin, his fellow headmasters, and Glynda Goodwitch, would be after reacting to The Wizard Of Oz.

I will never forgive CRWBY for dropping the ball so hard that people unironically believe this:

RWBY has become such a joke in other people's eyes that people genuinely believe that (fairly) ordinary humans can defeat a Huntsman.

Now, I know the "lore" of TF2 gets a bit wacky, but until the Heavy can stop a charging Megoliath with his bare hands or survive an explosion, a character like Elm should _pulverize_ him.

But the writers have mishandled RWBY so badly that there are some chuckleheads out there who think that even ordinary soldiers could handle everything on Remnant.

To see a series with so much potential treated like this really stings, especially as a writer myself, you know?

RWBY Reacts To Mythology-Episode 58: Mulan (Images Courtesy Of Forever Classic Games And The Belcourt Theatre)

Welcome to the newest episode of "RWBY Reacts To Mythology", FNDM. On today's episode, the heroes and villains of Remnant are having another viewing of one of their mythological counterparts/bases, this time for Lie Ren of Team JNPR.

That's right, FNDM. Today, Teams RWBY, JNPR, CFVY, and the rest of the RWBY character ensemble, heroes and villains alike, shall react to the legend of Lie Ren's inspiration, Hua Mulan.

And yes, the RWBY ensemble will be reacting to both the original myth from Chinese mythology, and Disney's version of the tale (the animated version, NOT the live-action version).

So what do you members of the FNDM think the reactions and opinions of the RWBY heroes and villains would be after reacting to the story of Mulan? As always, please be respectful when posting your replies.

RWBY Fanfiction Trope: Weiss Schnee And Fast Food

First and foremost, I know this is belated, but a VERY happy birthday to our favorite resident ice queen, Weiss Schnee!

Second, I'd like to get the FNDM's thoughts on a trope regarding Weiss I've seen in RWBY fanfiction that I absolutely love. The trope in question is Weiss being introduced to "fast food" by her teammates.

The basic gist of the trope is pretty simple: Weiss has lived her life eating a very refined and cultured diet, but at some point her teammates introduce her to fast food, and she very quickly becomes addicted to it.

The first time I ever saw this trope was the story "On Silver Wings, With Iron Hearts" by "ClemPrime" on AO3. (Spoiler Alert) At one point in that story, Weiss's teammates basically call out how dainty and small Weiss's meals have been, and they conclude that her father was attempting to starve her by making her follow the diet she's been following. So they resolve to solve this problem by introducing her to fast food, and Weiss very quickly learns she absolutely loves its taste.

Another part of this trope that I find always results in pure comedy gold is when her teammates introduce Weiss to fast food, she's completely baffled by the concept of fast food as a whole. One of my favorite examples that use this type of storyline is "It's Bo Time!" by "SnowQueenOfMyHeart" (also on AO3), where Yang treats her teammates to the Cajun fast food place Bojangles, and Weiss has no idea what to make of a lot of the food and drink there ("Who puts ICE in tea?!").

So who else in the FNDM likes this idea of Weiss very quickly developing a craving for fast food? Is this a trope/story device that you would probably use yourself in your own writings to flesh out her character? Lastly, what type of fast food do you think Weiss would come to love the most?

Nora Valkyrie Outfit Design Feature Question (Images Courtesy Of RWBY Wiki, Five World War Wikia, And TV Tropes)

I've got a question for the FNDM regarding a feature of Nora Valkyrie's outfit.

My question is, do you feel that it is mandatory for Nora's outfit to have that heart-shaped cutout in its chest?

Up until they get to Atlas and get new outfits, Nora's outfit has always had that heart-shaped cutout in the chest area. But the Atlas version doesn't have that feature.

This appears to be something I've seen a lot of negative reactions to. Sometimes I've even heard the same be said for fanmade RWBY projects. One such example is Nora's design in the fan-project RWBY Evermorrow. I've seen some reactors on YouTube look at Nora's design and basically say, "It's okay, but it needs the heart symbol on the chest. Otherwise it doesn't feel like Nora."

So is the general consensus that Nora's designs are better when she has the heart symbol on her chest, or are there sections of the FNDM that are okay with it being absent?

Was Ironwood authoritarian? A post discussing the nuances of authoritarianism, dictatorship, and tyranny

A while ago. Months.

I made a post talking about what role Winter would have in the future.

I mentioned that perhaps, as the new general of Atlas, with Sleet dead, Ironwood dead, and Camila's fate unknown, she would be the only political authority in Atlas.
And well, I said something like that wouldn't be a bad thing because "dictatorship is just another form of government, not inherently bad."

That caused some criticism towards me for implying that dictatorship isn't inherently bad.

And I can understand the confusion, but I feel I was misunderstood. I wasn't 100% serious; in part, I was half-joking. Besides, I was saying it in the context of Winter, a fictional character in a fictional situation.

I don't support dictatorships. But I do think Winter could be a good leader (in a government with checks and balances) for the people of Atlas and Mantle.

What does that have to do with the post? I'll address that in a moment. Normally, when we discuss whether or not Ironwood is a tyrannical dictator, multiple defenses for him arise.
He can't be a dictator because he allowed elections for 3/5 of the political power in the kingdom. And a dictator wouldn't allow that.
He can't be a tyrant because a tyrant orders the arrest of dissenters. And he allowed dissent until before Gravity.

However, I feel that this is a simplistic and even cartoonish view of how a dictatorship and a tyranny work.
After all, a dictatorship and a tyranny are not only determined by what the ruler DOES NOT DO, but also by what the ruler DOES.

How democratic is a government where one person holds 2/5 of the political power? In many real-life democratic governments, military personnel cannot hold political office. That is, they have to retire from military service to hold those positions.

The council doesn't seem to have a separation of powers, considering there's no parliament. That's clearly a problem at the writing level with the worldbuilding. But the point is that Ironwood is complicit in that by forming part of it.

James is the person with the most political power in the kingdom. With the power of the army, the academy, and political power in his person.

Now, that doesn't make him a dictator, but it definitely doesn't present him in the most democratic light.

What people forget is that there are index of democracy. Some countries are more democratic than others.

Regarding tyranny, that's an interesting point. Many of his measures have been perceived as authoritarian, but before addressing the issue of authoritarianism, I want to point something out:

Camilla: General, since the day you were appointed Headmaster, there have been Atlesians who are skeptical of one man holding two Council seats.
Ironwood: Yes, which is exactly why we have checks and balances.
Sleet: We're supposed to, but lately you've been running roughshod all over them, making unilateral decisions without us.
(RWBY: As above, so below)

Something I saw criticized at the time regarding the writing was: How can there be checks and balances if they can be broken?

It's easy, you simply break the law.

Let's suppose there is a separation of powers in a country, yet the president decides to impose laws on his own. It's not that the constitution doesn't limit the president's power, it's that the president breaks laws on his own.

The same seems to be happening here. We don't have many details about what kind of decisions James makes unilaterally. But we do know that he does.

That level of concentration of power in his person is dangerous.

Now, about authoritarianism. Closing borders, declaring an embargo, regulations that curtail freedoms, etc.

Is that authoritarian? Some might say they aren't authoritarian because they are necessary measures. But one thing doesn't negate the other. A measure doesn't automatically become NON-AUTHORITARIAN just because it's good.

That's not how it works.

Am I saying that James was unjustified in implementing those measures? Not at all. I'm simply saying that one should understand that there are certain nuances to his decisions.

Some point out that James is only a general and headmaster. But we've seen him participate in making decisions regarding diplomacy and the economy: border closures and embargoes, respectively.

What am I getting at?
Is Ironwood a dictator? No, but he's not very democratic either.
Is Ironwood a tyrant? No, but he's authoritarian.
Is Ironwood authoritarian? Yes, but he was justified (Pre-gravity).

Personally, I consider measures that curtailed freedoms, such as health regulations and quarantine, to be authoritarian, but despite that, justified and necessary.

For me, pre-gravity, although I disagree with many of its measures from a strategic point of view, Ironood's measures do not seem tyrannical to me.

RWBY Reacts To Mythology-Episode 57: Conan The Barbarian (Images Courtesy Of RWBY Wiki, Atomic Books, And IMDB)

Welcome to the newest episode of "RWBY Reacts To Mythology", FNDM! Today, the heroes and villains of Remnant are journeying to one of the most famous examples of modern mythology in our mythology movie theater, as they enter the realm of Cimmeria.

That's right, FNDM, today I want to know what you think the reactions and opinions of the RWBY ensemble would be after they've reacted to the story and world of Robert E. Howard's iconic character, Conan the Barbarian. And to clarify, the characters from RWBY will be reacting to the original novels, the comics/graphic novels, AND the Arnold Schwarzenegger film duology.

RWBY Fanfiction Concept/Plotline: Grandmother Salem

Just a few minutes ago, my brain was imagining random scenarios for RWBY AUs and one of them immediately grabbed my attention.

In this scenario, it gets revealed that Ruby Rose and Salem are actually RELATED to each other. More specifically, Salem is Ruby's grandmother (in the scenario I imagined, Summer Rose is still Ruby's mom, but Ruby's dad is actually a son of Salem, making Salem Ruby's grandmother).

Has anyone in the FNDM written (or considered writing) any piece of RWBY fanfiction where Ruby is Salem's granddaughter in some way? This feels like a plot twist that could potentially create some very compelling story drama.

The WF's issue isn't the violence, it's the lack of nuance

The common complaint with the WF plotline is that it's supposedly racist in the depiction of the WF because of their violence. Which...isn't a problem? Social movements become violent and tyrannical all the time. Hell, that's what most revolutions end up as. That doesn't make the concept of a social movement or fight for equality bad- just that they're easy to hijack with bad actors who create a violent bent either out of self interest or being blinded by self righteousness.

No, the problem is the fact that...the WF plotline is very basic. For the WF, it isn't so bad since you do get some variety from the 'pure good' side of Blake and Ghira, the more flawed side of Illa and Sienna and the just malicious side of Adam. But like, there's a large ideological gap between Ghira's absolutism view on pacifism and Sienna's use of violence as a fear tactic. Most people would not just jump from one to the next, that's just too big a gap and people would likely be put off from her. There should have been a position between the two, someone who was okay with using violence but as an act of self defense against aggression (that isn't Blake) to make the slide from a purely peaceful organization to one that thinks violence is a perfectly valid tool to use. And there should have been more people like Illa, who were more openly conflicted about the use of violence but felt pressured into doing so out desperation. There should be arguments and debates between members about the ethics of such violence. Actual real life movements that turn rotten often slowly rot from people genuinely trying to do good naturally falling victim to normal human failings, like not considering the long term effects of your actions. There's some level of nuance here...but there really should have been more.

No, the real problem is the human side. To be blunt: a large part of why I don't think the WF plotline is racist is because anyone on the side of being '''pro-human''' is treated like a one dimensional cardboard cutout. Cardin has no personality beyond being a douchebag. Literally: Cardin isn't even given a reason for why he's a jackass other than that he's a jackass. Cordovin is an over the top caricature who's only redeemed because she sided with the heroes (note that she's the least racist person here). And Jacques...Jacques is literally every stereotype of Adam mashed together and made worse. Even the worst interpretations of Adam (like that he deserved his branding) is still more of a person than Jacques (who is worse in every way...because he is evil.) Hell, at least characters like Adam and Illa are treated with drama and some baseline respect, given something of a point. Neither Cardin nor Jacques nor even Cordovin are given a reason for their racism (like being taught this, having bad experiences with the Fanaus, being pro-human supremacists or even having a 'fuck you, got mine'). They're racist...because they are either one-dimensional bad guys or, with Cordovin, are given a basic 'bad person' trait. Weiss differs since she's a better person than them...but that's only after she stops being racist and basically switches sides.

Because of this: the racism in RWBY doesn't really feel that extreme. There isn't any kind of underlying racism in the general society, beyond a sign in Mistral's shithole part. There is no like, decent person who's racist to show that racism is generally accepted. The only racists you have are just...the worst which isn't how racism works in the real world (plenty of people you would consider decent and kind are racist and that's why it's so bad). They're all the worst people in the show and everyone hates them for it...which sends the idea that racism is generally seen as not okay in Remnant and makes the WF look like they're overreacting. And it's probably because the writers never thought about how a decent person could be racist because that's generally the society we live in (or at least, in 2012. Now it's a different story- I fucking hate it here), even though Remnant is NOT our world.

There needed to be a lot more insidious racism in the story. People who are nice who nonetheless react in disgust at the Fanaus. People who say innocently racist things. People who look at racial discrimination and think it's okay. People who try justifying their racism (that AREN'T being general bitches like Weiss). This doesn't make racism good: this is still a moral failing. But it shows just how oppressive things are and why the WF would be so desperate. Because it's fucking NORMALIZED.

RWBY Reacts To Mythology-Episode 56: The Arabian Nights (Images Courtesy Of RWBY Wiki, Books Of Wonder, And Disney Movies)

Welcome to the newest episode of "RWBY Reacts To Mythology," FNDM! On today's visit to our mythology movie theater, the heroes and villains of Remnant shall react to the Middle East's most iconic collection of myths and legends: The Arabian Nights.

Since there are so many tales in the Arabian Nights, we are mainly going to have the RWBY heroes and villains react to arguably the three most famous ones: Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Sinbad the Sailor, and of course, Aladdin, the inspiration behind Remnant's very own Emerald Sustrai. And in the case of Aladdin, the RWBY ensemble will also be reacting to the Disney version (the animated one) in addition to the original myth.

So what do you believe the reactions and opinions of the RWBY ensemble would be after reacting to the tales from the Arabian Nights? What do you believe Emerald would think of her mythological basis/counterpart?

Oscar's Potential Semblance: Temporal Manipulation?

I've got a question regarding what Oscar's Semblance could be.

A large portion of the FNDM appears to be in agreement that Oscar's Semblance should be something to do with manipulating time. But I'm curious as to how far everyone thinks that power should extend.

Should it just be a single variant of manipulating time, like only the ability to rewind time? Should it be like in Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, where Link can rewind time for objects but not people? Or should it be like the Prince Of Persia Trilogy, and Oscar can learn how to rewind, slow, freeze, AND accelerate time (for himself)?

If Oscar DOES get a time-related Semblance, which version do you think he should have? Or should he have a completely different Semblance in your eyes?

RWBY Reacts To Mythology-Episode 55: Loki (Images Courtesy Of RWBY Wiki And The Marvel Rivals Wiki)

Welcome to the newest episode of "RWBY Reacts To Mythology", FNDM! Today in our mythology movie theater, the heroes and villains of Remnant will be returning to the world of Norse Mythology to react to the god that is easily the most infamous Trickster God in ALL mythology: Loki.

So what do you members of the FNDM feel the reactions and opinions of the RWBY ensemble would be after watching the many hijinks and antics that Loki got himself into? As well as how often his pranks tended to backfire on him and HE had to be the one who fixed them?

RWBY Reacts To Mythology-Episode 53: Robin Hood (Images Courtesy Of Hero Fanon Wiki, RWBY Wiki, Hachette UK, And Disney Movies

Welcome to Episode 54 of "RWBY Reacts To Mythology", FNDM! On today's episode, we have another instance where the heroes and villains of Remnant will be reacting to the mythological counterparts of one or more members of the RWBY ensemble.

This time around, the RWBY heroes and villains will be reacting to the legend of Robin Hood and his Merry Men, the inspiration/basis behind Robyn Hill and her Happy Huntresses. So when posting what you think the reactions and opinions of the RWBY ensemble would be to this myth, I especially want to know what you believe the Happy Huntresses would think of the characters they are based on.

This will also be an instance in this series where the RWBY heroes and villains will be shown two versions of the myth they are watching. They will be shown both the original version of the myth, and the Disney reimagining of the myth. I chose to do this because this is one of several myths/legends/folklore/fairytales where the Disney version is easily one of the most famous and well-known retellings of the story.

I’m gonna be honest but Volume 8’s soundtrack was not the best

Some of the songs don’t have the same beat as last volumes, it feels like Jeff doesn’t care anymore.
