Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

In town visiting my girlfriends family,

Just wondering if anyone knows where there’s a good selection of used golf clubs, maybe thrift stores or goodwill? Also what’s your favorite driving range? We’re out in Blackhawk, but willing to drive. If anyone knows(or is selling) I’d greatly appreciate the input. Thank you

economics of opening an ethnic grocery store in rapid?

i used to shop at the asian grocery next to everest restaurant on w. main.

it closed down.

i used to shop at the curry masala on w. main.

it closed down.

then i used to shop at masala mart on e. st. joseph st.

it closed down.

there's still a decent asian grocery on e. north st.

i'm interested in opening or bankrolling a small ethnic grocery store. that sells east asian and south asian groceries. maybe also mexican.

my asks:

  • if you know "Al Rodriguez" ("AL") who used to own curry masala and masala mart, i'd like to get in touch with him to get the low-down on the business (DM me on here).
  • if you know anyone who worked at any of the stores that have closed down that i've mentioned above, and they are willing to share the low-down on the business, i'd like to get in touch (DM me on here).
  • if you have thoughts you'd like to share, please comment below. in particular, i'd be interested in thoughts about neighborhood selection (in rapid), how to go about hiring people to work there, any suitable commercial properties available for rent or sale.

Drive Thru's Slowing Down

I've defintely seen a noticeable decrease in the number of vehicles in drive-thru's, Starbucks, McDonalds, etc. Are these businesses laying people off? Are people going to other, cheaper drive thru's or have people just been cutting back on eating out in general?

Small Businesses need help

Hello all. I am an antique vendor at Vendors Emporium and Curiosities, owned by Jessica Castleberry. Last night, I received an email stating that every vendor must be completely moved out by June 3rd at 6 PM, which is only 16 days away.

The email stated: “Due to a recent change in our lease, we are no longer permitted to sublet vendor spaces. Because of this, we unfortunately need to close out our current vendor booth model. This means all vendor spaces will need to be vacated by 6 PM June 3rd.”

We are expected to believe that after operating for over a year, this suddenly became an issue with only 16 days notice? This situation is devastating for dozens of local vendors who now have to remove all of their inventory and scramble to find new places to sell their products. These vendors include soap makers, candle makers, antique dealers, a comic book store, a bakery, a crystal shop, collectors, and many other small local businesses.

Vendors Emporium and Curiosities gave many people a stable place to sell their items without constantly traveling from event to event. It helped support local creators, collectors, and small businesses in our community. To shut it down this abruptly and leave vendors with almost no time to prepare is incredibly frustrating and disappointing.

Many people also remember the abrupt closure of Little Nest Preschool in December 2024, which was also owned by Jessica Lou Castleberry.

https://www.kotatv.com/2024/12/04/local-daycare-abruptly-closes-leaving-families-scrambling/

She also owns Coffee and the Cats.

At the very least, local vendors and customers deserve transparency and more notice than this. Right now, many small businesses are being left in a very difficult position.

Please share this so the community is aware of what is happening and so these displaced vendors may be able to find new places to set up and continue their businesses.

Also, if anyone knows of local businesses, markets, or open commercial spaces in the Rapid City area that may be willing to take in vendors, please comment below.

Quonset Huts on Canyon Lake Drive

We were talking about Quonset huts today at work (my younger co-workers had no idea what I was talking about, lol) and I know there used to be quite a few on Canyon Lake Drive. I thought there was at least one left, but apparently not because it's not on Google Street View.

I tried googling, but can't seem to find any history of those Quonset huts. Does anybody here know anything?

Looking for a personal chef *Serious replies please*

I am looking for someone who can create a menu each week for me and my small family. Looking for 4-5 days a week to have dinner prepared on site, along with possibly some meal prep for lunch the following day.

Although our diet could change and we’re not super strict with this at this point but I am currently looking to lower my cholesterol a bit as well. So that’s something I’d currently want to take into consideration.

There will be times in which my child may not be able to handle the meals we have in the same capacity so in some cases we will need a deconstructed meal for them.

Trying to get myself and my families health on point and we aren’t very good at cooking/finding recipes that work.

Please DM me with your qualifications. Feel free to include whatever you feel is relevant. I am in South Rapid.

Note: our budget is a bit negotiable and we’ll pay for all the food. In some cases I suppose if you like the meal you could make the meal for yourself too. Let’s chat!

Any Good Real Estate Agent Recommendations

I'm looking to buy a house soon and just got pre-qualified for a mortgage. I am now ready to find a real estate agent and start home shopping.

I have a few specific things I am looking for. The first qualification is that I do not want to be attracted to the agent and have that influence my decision, so no attractive females, let's just say the agent will have to be male. Preferably also not attractive. Are there any average looking guys that sell houses? It seems like the field is dominated by attractive young women from what I can see.

I would also like to have some kind of reduced fee, or fixed cost from the agent. I would prefer paying a fixed cost, regardless of the final price of the house. This incentivises the agent to help me find a house, rather than trying to get me to spend the most money.

Last, I would require someone with patience. I suffer from mental health issues and can't handle being constantly hounded and pushed. I want to move at my own pace, and have the agent willing to take things slow. It could potentially take me like 3 years to find the right place, and I don't want the agent to try to get me to look at 5 houses every week.

Purple Bag Project

This is a long shot but, does anyone know of local liquor stores that participate in the Purple Bag Project? Cleaning out the storage unit and would rather donate the bags than trash em.

Anyone know more about this? Ridgeline Roadhouse?

I visit RC to see my son, daughter and grandkids every 2-3 months from out of state and was driving up around Sheridan Lake last weekend (holy road construction) and saw this sign on a building around Horse Creek. Anyone know when “soon” is? Hoping it might be an option to try my next visit in July.

Getting a scholarship to SD Mines — few questions from a Muslim Arab coming from abroad

Hey everyone. I was recently offered a scholarship to do my master's at SD Mines, so it looks like Rapid City will be home for the next two years. Before I commit fully, I wanted to get some honest perspectives from people who actually live there rather than just reading generic relocation articles.

A couple of things are on my mind:

Cost of living / housing

My stipend is around $2,800/month. Is that enough to rent something decent in a safe neighborhood, or am I going to be stretching it thin? I've heard the city has some areas with rising crime, how bad is it and are there specific neighborhoods I should avoid or ones that are solid for a student?

Getting around

I've been told public transit isn't great and I'd basically need a car. Is that true? And realistically, can someone on a student budget afford to maintain one, or is there a workaroud?

Being Muslim / Arab in Rapid City

This is probably my biggest unknown. I'd love to hear honest takes — what's the general vibe toward Arabs or Muslims there? Any issues I should be aware of, or has it generally been a non-issue? Also, any halal food options around? Even one decent spot would make my life so much easier lol.

I'll be there for two years so I really want to go in with realistic expectations rather than surprises. Any insight from people who've been in a similar situation (or just know the city well) would mean a lot. Thanks!
