Humbled
I just took my 4th practice SHSAT, and it really humbled me. I was getting high high 500s and low 600s, but suddenly, I got a 532. (To clarify it was a HALF test) I got a 77%, but I usually get mid 80s, this really made me upset.

Im mainly asking people who have taken the SHSAT before, what was your journey like when did you start? Did you have any struggles? Do you have any advice? What textbooks did you use? How did you feel about them? Did they help? Feel free to share anything you think might be helpful.
I already chose bx sci but right now im a freshman and im wondering if bard might've been the better option. Its a lot closer, and in a better area, and a smaller school so I could be recognized more, but I know bard is not close to Bx sci educationally and im not sure about the college credit, since I haven't really felt anything special in Bx sci, How would they compare? I dont think I can switch but I wanted to evaluate my options. Or, ive just been overthinking and just stay in bx sci
does anyone know where to find free digital shsat practice tests like the ones the doe posts? i’ve been trying to study more seriously for the shsat but i honestly learn way better when the test is digital instead of on paper. with paper PDFs i keep losing my place, and it’s harder for me to go back to the passage and check evidence while answering the questions. when it’s online/digital, i can scroll back to the text faster, reread things more easily, and overall understand the passages better.
i already have some prep books and stuff, but even with those i still feel like practicing digitally helps me a lot more. i’m mainly looking for full-length free practice tests that are similar to the official doe style, especially for ela. if anyone has websites, online PDFs that are easier to use, or programs that let you take the test digitally, please send them 🙏
I come from an immigrant background, growing up in a Chinese immigrant family. My household was a blend of Mandarin and Cantonese, so I grew up understanding both dialects naturally. At the same time, I was learning English, and I became fluent in it. Currently, I’m taking German instead of Chinese because I felt I had already reached a high enough level for AP Chinese, having self-studied for it over the past year during my freshman year.
Last week, I took the AP Chinese exam despite not taking the actual class, just because I believe I self-studied enough plus my already existing knowledge. This summer, I plan to start self-studying French, aiming to take the AP French exam in my senior year—or maybe even in my junior year if I’m fortunate. My goal is to finish my AP German class in my senior year as well. These ideas had been part of my plan since I first started exploring my interests in Tech and language learning.
What truly motivates me is how much I’ve enjoyed learning German ever since just a month into the school year in late October. My language teacher, Mr. Hurd, has been a huge inspiration. He’s fluent in four languages which are French, German, Czech, English and has a good understanding of Russian and Spanish. He is even both currently teaching both French and German, and he used to be a teacher for English for ENL students. Spending time with him has continued to increase my admiration for languages and opened my eyes to new possibilities. I didn’t realize before how much I loved languages until I met him. I’ve always been fascinated by history and different cultures since sixth grade, but under his influence, I’ve discovered a real passion for language learning as a way to connect with the world and make myself proud.
However, I still do have doubts about whether this path is strong enough for college applications. I still do care a lot about standing out and making my extracurriculars meaningful. I believe my language journey is unique, enjoyable, and genuinely beneficial for me, but I wonder if the way I’m pursuing it aligns with what colleges value or if it’s enough to impress admissions officers. My freshman year is coming to a end, and I haven’t established much into my extracurricular activities besides making deeper plans, if I was a admissions officer and looking at my performance this year alone, I’ve would look at a kid like me just someone average at best with a big ambition but never truly does the work. I don’t believe I am good enough to run for student government or as a leader overall. Right now, I find myself questioning whether what I’m doing is the right path. It’s a bit confusing and uncertain, and I wonder if I will keep believing in the same idea in the future as I am now, I always been a huge over thinker
if anyone is interested in this information, I went to shsat 9 test view today and my scaled scores were 250 English and 264 math which turned out to be a 31/47 and a 41/47 raw scores. I also noticed that the second passage of both tests I took (shsat 8 and 9) were entirely field (and this time it was ALL of the field questions for English). I asked the facilitator of my test view about this and she also said that she’s noticed this. It might be worth noting? For example maybe a future taker could skip the second passage to save some time and come back to it at the end (in the case that this doesn’t happen).
How much time should you spend on the r&e section? I find it difficult to read the passage carefully while trying to maintain a fast pace and feeling like im running out of time
(on my practice tests, I usually spend 18–22 mins on the section whole revising and editing section)
My son received 468 from 2026 with ELA 218 and Math 250. No school offer with this score and we were shocked as he usually got about 90-100/114 when he worked on the mock exams. We went to test viewing today and found the stats below.
he had form C005 test and 25/47 from ELA and 36/47 from Math. At the viewing, he realized he had only two questions he didn't understand in Math and others are either not reading the questions carefully or correctly or reckless mistakes. Well, no excuses.
ELA might be harder than the mock exams. He had to scroll back and forth the passages several times to confirm the right answers.
Hope this helps for the students, who are preparing the test now.
He is working on his retake and hope the test viewing is helpful for him.
if anyone wants to know I just finished viewing my test. I got a 45/47 on the math section. I feel like that should translate to higher than 305 but could be given I had an easy form. Anyway I was pissed at my self I got a question about finding the mean wrong.. idk how but anyway. On the ela I got 32/47 which translated to 268. I was surprise because I thought a 32 would be much lower. What’s more weird is the fact that entirety of the 2nd passage were field questions and that was the passage I felt most confident on. The field for the math was much more spread out. I noticed the pattern every 3-5 questions there would be a field for the math section. Anyways, if anyone has any other questions I would be happy to answer
My son will be going to 5th grade next year and I plan to apply for the citywide screened schools. does anyone have experience which schools would be the best to prepare him to get into a specialized high school and prepare him well for the SHSAT? thanks for any feedback!
hi so i’m a 8th grader taking the geometry regents in june and I don’t know any shapes besides the basics (triangle, square, circle). What shapes do we need to know? Do we need to know how many sides a decagon, octagon, etc have? thanks!
So I don’t want to waste any time with this, I didn’t pass the 8th grade test and I don’t want to waste my opportunity so I’m planning to study for the 9th grade shsat. The problem is my ELA is good but my math is very weak and another problem is that I don’t know what to study for Math shsat for 9th grade and I have plenty of time since it is currently may I want to study all these monthes and try to get into Bronx science
I have not graduated high school yet and am in a SHS currently so i was wondering if its best to put my shs and if it would impact my linkedin profile in a good way or bad way
I currently do SHSAT tutoring, and for the practice tests, I average around high 500s to low/mid 600s. However, the tests are not full length. When I take the real test, do I expect a higher or lower score? (The tests are 52 questions long.)
For the bktech blue card i filled it all out like on sunday but i changed my phone number but on the blue card it asked for my phone number, do i js leave it or like redo it ?
i’ve been studying for the shsat since march but my ela score is still really bad and i honestly dont know what to do anymore. i have a bunch of kaplan books and i watch youtube videos but i still struggle especially with the reading passages and revising/editing questions. it feels like nothing is helping and im starting to get frustrated. i even tried to watch greg videos and look at the post he did but nothing helping. what should i do?
heres the study schedule i tried to follow: ELA SHSAT:
1.Khan Academy (Atleast One Unit: Grammar)
2.Online Shsat practice questions
3.5-8 state test questions
4.kaplan practice (6-13 pages)
this usually takes me around an hour to a 1hr 30
idk what to do at this point; my score
isnt improving and im really lost
I'm wondering when they're going to post the schedules. did anyone get it??
so i have a very poor attention span so it causes me to do well on one half of a section but get lazy throughout.
what happens is i do well for the first 25-30 questions but then something happens and i get distracted.
I try to go into quiet rooms , hiding my devices and taking breaks but it just doesnt help as much
The other day i managed not to get distracted and i got a 45-48 but yesterday i took one and got distracted and got a 34-38.
Any tips would help.(Im studying for shsat 9)
Has anyone who’s been accepted to Stuyvesant received the early‑June placement test invitation or instructions to set up a Talos account? We didn't go to the open house. Thanks!
In my tutoring, I am currently learning about Diagonals.
I have 2 questions about them:
Will they be on the SHSAT ?
Are they Geometry 1 ?
Thanks !!
