I just watched the Space Odyssey 2001 not to long ago and fell in LOVE with HAL 9000.
Does anyone know any romance books with a human x sentient spaceship? I searched online, but in everybook I found the romance wasn’t cannon or the ai would have a human body.

Hello everyone! I'm looking for science fiction books where romance doesn't dominate the story.
What I mean is that I'm looking for books with a human female protagonist and a good, engaging sci-fi story. I want there to be romance, but for it to develop gradually and slowly. It could even start halfway through the story or not happen until the second book in the series.
I want the main focus to be the story and everything that's happening, rather than the romance.
It would also be a huge plus if the female protagonist joins a diverse group of characters and eventually develops strong friendships and meaningful bonds with them.
I'm basically looking for a science fiction story with a human female protagonist, an engaging plot, a diverse group of characters, strong friendships and bonds, and a slow-burn romance that remains secondary to the main story.
Any recommendations?

What we're rarely getting in mainstream dynamics is a Dual-Perspective Logic Match.
I’m talking about romances where both leads operate with genuine, adult competence. Where the friction comes from competing professional systems, logistics, or real ideological clashes—not from manufactured miscommunication. When a male lead shows vulnerability, it shouldn't require a massive, catastrophic childhood trauma backstory just to "allow" him to be human for two chapters. It should be built into his daily reality.
Just Look at how Rachel Lynn Solomon handles her contemporary leads, or how the slow-burn friction functions in Whitney G.’s best workplace setups. It's 😘 —Beautiful!: The leads are allowed to be competent, rational, and flawed simultaneously. The logic of the attraction actually tracks because their brains match.
First I thought it was just a demographic writing gap, but now I’m thinking, or say realizing it’s a systemic design issue. When you sanitize or exaggerate the male perspective, you don't just alienate male readers who are looking for an authentic foothold in the genre—you completely strip away the genuine relationship mechanics that female readers are trying to invest in.
What’s a book where the male inner monologue actually felt like a real, competent adult with an internal logic system—and what’s one where his POV Just completely broke the illusion for you?
I just read Strongest in the Galaxy (allegedly) by Veronique deSol. I thought the first part was hilarious. I actually laughed out loud a few times reading the MMCs POV. I was so excited because I thought I’d found a new favorite book! But once the characters got together I thought it wasn’t quite as interesting or funny. Still really enjoyed it but not as much.
What I really enjoyed was how frustrated and competitive the MMC was. He was obsessed with beating the FMC but lost every time. I like how she thought they were friendly but he was actually trying to screw her over and lowkey losing his mind.
Are there any books with a similar vibe? I’ve read sooooo many sci-fi books but I don’t think I’ve seen this trope(?) much.
I loved these books and had them on my shelf forever and now I can’t remember anything about the author or the title. The first one was about the winner of an interstellar war. She was either a politician, or in the military and “won” a male captive who turned out to be the leader of the defeated planet. I know the second part of the book takes place on his planet after they fall in love.
The second book I remember less about because I liked it less, and the heroine was the female general best friend of the female main character from the first book and that’s almost all I remember of it.

So i have a simple request, i’m looking for books with sweet and compassionate heroines. But i’m not a fan of alien mmc’s and fated mates, and so i ask for that not to be in the book. I also don’t like when a book takes place on a spaceship for the whole book. I like the idea of being on a different planet! I’d also like High spice, but not for it to be the entire plot. Thanks!
