Freshly serviced all-original SCVF005 Red Alpinist (Nov '99)

Just finished giving some much-needed love to my vintage Seiko Alpinist SCVF005, black dial "Red Alpinist" powered by the legendary 4S15 hi-beat movement. According to the serial number (9N0010), this piece dates back to November 1999.

I received it running quite tired, with an amplitude around 220°. After a full service, I managed to get it running healthy and strong, sitting nicely around 270° with 0s/d and 0.0ms beat error on the timegrapher. It feels great to breathe new life into this 4S caliber.

The watch is completely original, including the bracelet. The case itself is strictly unpolished, showing its honest age and character, which I love. One tricky part of the restoration was a deep scratch right over the cyclops magnifier; I decided to tackle it myself and successfully polished it out using cerium oxide.

I’m also genuinely surprised by how strong the LumiBrite still glows after more than 25 years—it charges up quickly and is incredibly legible.

I absolutely love the 37.5 mm dimensions and proportions of this reference. Honestly, I find it way prettier than the modern releases. No display case back, but I wouldn't mind having one to admire that gorgeous 4S15 movement.

This is a watch that was clearly loved in the past, and it will continue to be. It’s certainly not meant to just sit in a watch box collecting dust.

Do you guys think the center link on this bracelet would fit baby alpinist endlinks?

So I know Marc from Long Island Watch already has bracelets for the Seiko Alpinists that would fit a baby alpinist. However, this bracelet has on the fly micro adjust and was released for the Hamilton Murph and the alpinist bracelets do not have an on the fly clasp. I have a sneaking suspicion that these center links would be compatible with baby alpinist endlinks. What do you guys think?

[Seiko Red Alpinist SCVF007]

[Seiko Red Alpinist SCVF007]

The Seiko SCVF007, commonly known as the “Red Alpinist,” was introduced in 1995 as part of Seiko’s revival of the historic Alpinist line, which originally dates back to 1959.

It features the Seiko 4S15 automatic movement, a 25-jewel, high-beat movement running at 28,800 vph, with hacking and hand-winding.

The SCVF007 is recognizable by its cream dial, internal rotating compass bezel, cathedral-style hands, and distinctive red “Alpinist” script — the detail that gave this generation its “Red Alpinist” nickname.

These models were produced for only a relatively short period and are considered an important predecessor to the later and better-known modern Alpinist models.

I hope I can find another one in excellent condition, so I can keep this one just to look at. 😄

Been wearing this one for the past few days…

I don't know why I am struggling to bond with this watch, but I have had it since late April and have only worn it a handful of times. The stock bracelet was hard to get a good fit with (only 2 micro adjust holes), non-tapered, etc. I put an Uncle Half Link in it which helped, but still didn't like the wrist feel - so I put an Uncle Straps Senator bracelet on it which helped tremendously, but I just never reach for it.

Same thing happened with my Baby Alpinist SPB155, which had mostly the same issues coupled with a shade of green/gold I just couldn't find an occassion to wear - so I sold it not long after buying it. I am trying to avoid the same fate with this watch because I do love the dial, so I'm trying fabric, FKM, etc. straps to see if I can find some love for it before it goes on eBay.

Maybe it's the thickness? I have found I value the thickness of the case to be something very important to me as my journey has progressed, and this one is the most hefty I have in that regard. I understand that it's due to the open caseback and the 200m water resistance, but that's kinda overkill for a non-diver in my opinion. I'd gladly give up 100-150m and the view of the rather pedestrian movement for 2-3mm less of thickness.

Anyone else ever go thru this on a watch they SHOULD like, at least on paper?

Is this Alpinist [SPB197J1] Legit?

I found this watch for sale (Seiko Prospex SPB197J1), I am quite new to watches and wanted y’all’s opinion on it. The quality of the sellers camera is absolutely terrible, but I’m hoping someone can help me with authenticating it.

Show me your Uncle Senator vs Executive bracelets

Would appreciate it if folks can drop a picture - that can help me decide. And also, share their experiences of using one of these Uncle bracelets.

Also, if there anyone who was able to get the bracelet from their Seiko AD and how much did it cost?

Wow, any leads on ordering/pre ordering the new purple Alpinist? US based.

Every store I contact says they are sold out already. Contacted some local jewelry stores but haven't heard anything back yet. Has anyone had any luck yet? Can they really be sold out already??
