20-year-old Dialysis Tech interested in becoming a Sleep Technologist (Milwaukee, WI) – Looking for advice!

Hi everyone!
I’m a 20-year-old male living in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area, and I’m really interested in becoming a Polysomnographic Technologist (Sleep Tech).

I’ve been working as a Dialysis Technician for almost a year. I really enjoy working in healthcare and helping patients, but dialysis has a schedule that changes a lot, and I’m hoping to find something with a more stable schedule and, overall, a slower-paced work environment. Sleep technology seems like it could be a great fit (at from what I’ve read so far).

I’ve been doing a lot of research, but I’m honestly a little confused about the education and certification requirements.

I’ve noticed that some job postings say “no education required” or “will train,” but then I also see that many positions require certifications like the RPSGT or CPSGT. Could someone explain how that process typically works? Is it common to get hired first and receive on-the-job training before becoming certified, or is formal schooling usually expected?

I’d also love to hear from anyone in the Midwest, especially Wisconsin, if possible.

Some questions I have are:
How did you get started?
Is on-the-job training still common?
What education route would you recommend?
How long did it take you to become certified?
What’s the job market like in Wisconsin?
What’s a realistic starting salary, and what can experienced Sleep Techs expect to make?
Overall, are you happy with the career? Would you recommend it?

I’d really appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or guidance you can share. Thank you all in advance!

Most difficult but important things to study for the RPSGT exam?

Hi everyone! So I officially started working as a sleep tech, and I’m just gaining some hours until I can pass my exam. I would love to pass on the first try, and I feel so conflicted because I’m seeing so many people struggle with the material. It makes it sound like the test is extremely challenging, even if you know a good portion of things. So I’m curious to know, what are certain topics that are the most important to study that were the trickiest for the exam? I’m taking a bunch of practice exams but I’m finding the questions and answers easy for the most part, so I feel like I’m missing what the real deal would be more like. I haven’t purchased the BRPT practice exams yet, but I do plan to soon. Thank you!

Help Me Study !!

I’m supposed to be taking my test in August, and I’ve been working at my job for a year and six months. This will be my first time taking the exam, and I’m honestly feeling overwhelmed.
The hardest part for me is figuring out where to even begin studying. I don’t know what I should focus on or what’s most likely to be on the test. I’ve never been very good at studying or taking tests, but I really want to pass on my first attempt. Any advice on where I should start or what I should focus on would really mean a lot.

Questions about the job

Are you an independent contractor, or are you paid by the hospital/facility you work for? What do you do on days when you don’t have anyone scheduled for a sleep study? Is the pay hourly?
