My Snow White movie ranking

I was inspired by a post I made recently asking about non-Disney adaptations to do another ranking ALL the Snow Whites I've seen. Not all that exist, just in my personal viewing.

I'm not going to go into detail on why I ranked them the way I did otherwise this post would be long as hell. But if you have any questions on why I ranked any specific one the way I did, feel free to ask in the comments and I will answer.

If you have a favorite I haven't seen and want to recommend, please share in the comments.

Honorable mention: Huntsman: Winter's War (couldn't include it in the ranking since Snow White isn't in it and is only mentioned).

The live action Tangled has been revealed at D23!

I know this movie isn’t out yet, and I’m pretty sure it’s going to do fine, but I have Had ENOUGH of Disney doing these stupid, cash grab, corporate greed, live action remakes because of how much they destroy what made the originals so special. I mean, where’s the emotion, the sobbing, not to mention the charm, hell, even Snow White got the worst of this trend, even though Walt Disney himself did not want this to be altered. And with Tangled being the last princess movie to be brought in live action "in theaters", maybe we’ll start to see some of the trend die down after Lilo and Stitch 2. At this point, I just hope we’re nearing the end of Disney’s live action trend, ever since LA Cinderella, the remakes have been going downhill, I get that they want to prevent their characters from going into public domain, but if they really wanted to remake them, they should’ve went with CGI when they had the chance, heck why not add in new or familiar characters like maybe their palace pets (to fix lore issues and bring back childhood memories because they haven’t referenced them a long time), or their children from descendants, or even better, either remake them in CGI or live action and actually do it right or don’t remake them at ALL. Sorry if this sounds like a rant, I just really hope Disney goes back to what they do best: animation, even if it’s CGI, and I love 3D animation, and never does any live action slop like this ever again.

Hi! I collect original animation art and I just made a Snow White video where I talk about the different types of art to collect and showcase some rare pieces-Queen cels, Witch Drawings, and a Courvoisier cel of Snow White and all 7 Dwarfs-  all from the 1937 film if you'd like to check it out.

The magic mirror

He is definitely the most mysterious character in both the movie and the story he originated from. He's the only neutral character I feel in the film. He's mostly loyal to the Evil Queen, praising her for her radiance but he's also ok with admitting that someone else in the land is more beautiful than she is. I know that's already obvious, I just felt like giving some Magic Mirror appreciation.

Do you want Palace Pets to return?

Or do you think that it’s discontinuation is for the best.

What are your favorite SW adaptations outside of the Disney versions?

  1. SW and the Huntsman

It's in my flair, so it's no secret that I adore this movie. The sequel too, as panned as it was. I mod the sub there too (r/huntsman) if anyone is interested. It was so different, very cool visuals, SW wasn't the strongest part but I don’t think she's as bland as people made her out to be, it takes elements from early versions of the source material rather than the Disney version, it wasn't afraid to be dark, the relationships are complex, and the evil queen is super entertaining.

  1. Mirror Mirror

I have a complicated relationship with this one. I have a nostalgia for it and it remains one of the most unique adaptations I've ever seen (aside from Fairest of Them All, which was really bad). The actors all had dimension, it doesn't go quite where you think, and this might be the only one I've seen where they cast actual little people. I just can't in my gut say it's "good." It has good things in it, but it's treading the line too much of being so unique that it sucks. Like the narrative isn't compelling enough. It's more of a comedy that's somewhat entertaining.

  1. Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarves

This one was a South Korean adaptation killed by bad American marketing. For whatever reason it was advertised here as a "fat shaming" movie, and therefore people didn't watch it. I watched it for the first time recently and let me tell you it's NOT that. It actually has a very positive message. The animation is gorgeous and it is also very different in how they tell the story. With that being said, it also steals from a LOT of previous adaptations (Disney movies, SW and the Huntsman, Mirror Mirror, Once Upon a Time, Shrek, and even Mirrored by Alex Flinn). I can't prove it intentionally copied all those things, but the parallels are numerous. It doesn't do anything that amazing to warrant being widely talked about (it was widely talked about for the wrong reasons), but it was a very cute film with a nice spin and worth a watch to make up for the bad marketing that ruined its potential. If you're interested, it's on Prime.

  1. Snow White and the Magic Mirror

HUGE "hear me out." This is a very cheap, straight to video, cash grab. However, it's actually very funny. I know I just criticized Mirror Mirror for being too humorous, but here it's intentional. You're not supposed to take it seriously. It's similar to Hoodwinked! It's clearly cheap and short and like I said, not serious with no real emotional investment, but I really don't think it's my nostalgia talking. I rewatched it as an adult and it still made me laugh. They try and do a Robin Williams' genie thing with the mirror and while he's definitely NOT on Robin's level, he still manages to get some good celebrity jokes. They make fun of other fairy tales, and there's even a Psycho joke in the film. Not kidding. Also, the queen is really funny cause she wants so badly to be the fairest in all the land that she just banishes everyone from the kingdom. Like I said, do not take it seriously, and it's pretty funny. You can find it on YouTube.

Curious to hear some from you guys that may have not been on my radar!

Those are the Odd Sisters?

I've read some of these disney villain novels by Serena Valentino, and they mention the Odd Sisters. This day, I'm watching this MilkyyMelodies video of the Evil Queen's origin, and there were three witches that Grimhilde's father made a deal with to become the Magic Mirror.

Grimhilde said that they claimed cousins of the King. Hey, the Odd Sisters are somewhat his cousins in the novel Fairest of All: A Tale of the Wicked Queen.

All I wonder is, did Grimhilde became their apprentice and they're the ones ruling the kingdom in the shadows.
