Taunton - Vape shops, Barber shops and Salons

Is anyone at the council in here? If so, can they please explain what is going through their heads authorising so many shops in the town that are clearly related to money laundering and organised crime, likely drugs, human trafficking and more?

For example:- Whose idea was it to approve the 8th Turkish barber shop along Eastreach? Elaborate fit outs, never got any customers… I know our council lot aren’t the brightest, but it really is not rocket science. The graph for barbershops per capita will at least be up and to the right 🤡

I surely can’t be the only one who wants to know what on earth is going on over there!? We can’t have lowered our standards so much that we’re all just fine with this.

Every County in 48 Hours

Me and my family have spent the past couple of years trying to visit every English county in a 48 hour mini stay at each. Next week we’re visiting Somerset and so I’m hoping I can get some local insight. So far on the itinerary is a visit to the Roman Baths and a look around the city, Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge. I wouldn’t mind adding sipping a pint of cider somewhere picturesque to that list. We love a good country pub for lunch/dinner so any recommendations there would be appreciated. Are the three destinations I’ve listed above things that you might suggest for this sort of trip? I’ve found from previous county visits that local knowledge about what’s ‘overrated’ or ‘not worth the ticket price’ or a better option can be invaluable.

For reference, we’re a family of 4 with a 2 and a 5 year old. So no long hikes or late night

Road sign on A46 outside Bath

Has anyone else noticed that someone repeatedly puts a large Somerset sticker above the “Welcome to Bath and North East Somerset” road sign on the A46 just past Pennsylvania outside Bath?

For quite a few years now I’ve seen it go up, get taken down by the council at some point and then a fresh one will appear again not long after.

Whoever's responsible is clearly not a fan of unitary authorities or BaNES Council!

Hello, help me

I am currently having difficulties learning English, and I would really like to improve. To help me integrate better into village life, I would like to know what the main topics of everyday conversation are, so I can better understand interactions between local people.

I am also wondering whether people are generally patient with someone who has great difficulty expressing themselves in English, but who is making real efforts to communicate.

Finally, I would really appreciate advice on village fairs or local events not to miss, especially calm and friendly activities around Timsbury.

Burton Pynsent Steeple

Burton Pynsent Steeple was built by Capability Brown in 1765 so William Pitt could thank Sir William Pynsent for leaving him his estate. This was the cover photo for 'Follies: A National Trust Guide' in 1986. #CurryRivel #Somerset #FollyFellowship #Follies #Folly #follies.org.uk

The daily commute -

To work (04:30) : head torch and moon lit, with a supporting cast of Deer, Badgers and Owls.

Homeward bound : I'm able to enjoy the scenery and soundtracked by birdsong.

Community Groups/Workshops In Glastonbury & Midsomer Norton and surrounding areas?

I'm looking to make some new friends and engage more in the local community.

I currently live in Glastonbury but also have strong ties to Midsomer Norton.

Can anyone point me in the direction of community boards which contain groups/Workshops/meet ups etc. or is anyone currently apart of any groups for these areas and the surrounding areas that you would suggest that you would advocate to join?

I'm fairly outgoing and open to trying new things.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

When I move to England, I would really like to integrate into village life around Timsbury, even though I am French. I don’t want to just be a visitor passing through, but to become part of the community.

I love the idea of a village coming together to keep its local shops running, and people volunteering their time to make something useful for everyone. I would like to do my shopping in this kind of shop because I think it’s important to support local people and village life.

Once a week for three weeks, I would do some shopping to donate to a food bank to help people in need. The closest drop-off point I found is about 6 kilometres from Timsbury. I wouldn’t be able to give a lot because I will be cycling and only have a backpack to carry the food.

I simply want my trip to be useful in some way. My partner says it might be seen as badly, but for me it’s a way of taking part, helping, and feeling useful in the village. Do I really have the right to do this, or could it be seen negatively?

Thank you
