I stumbled across this book from another post recently that completely changed how I think about food.

We’re so used to fridges, supermarkets, and next day delivery that I honestly never stopped to think about how people actually ate before all that existed. This book is basically a collection of old recipes that were designed to last months or even years without refrigeration. The same kind of food our great grandparents (and great great grandparents) relied on.

What surprised me most wasn’t even the recipes, it was the mindset. Everything was about making food stretch, using what you had, and not relying on systems that could disappear overnight. Reading it made me realize how dependent we are now compared to even a couple generations ago.

I’ve tried a handful of the recipes so far. Some are definitely outside my normal rotation, but a few were genuinely good and oddly satisfying knowing they’d keep without power or fancy storage.

It’s less of a cookbook and more of a little history lesson disguised as one. Made me appreciate how resilient people used to be, especially when it came to food. I wanted to make this post as a bit of a shoutout to the creators for putting it together and the person who shared it here a couple months back (I couldn't find the old post to go back and comment).

Here's the website I bought the cookbook from, it's a pretty niche book so I don't think it's available on any mainstream platforms - survivalsuppers.com

Airbnb owners trying to buy houses

got this “handwritten” letter in the mail, has anyone else gotten one of these? i googled their phone number and it is indeed attached to their names, and an airbnb property came up as their address. i feel like it is deceptive and slimy to use a font that imitates a handwritten letter from a genuinely interested couple, when it is likely just another landlord trying to turn a profit off overpriced airbnbs. anywho, throwing this away!

(Serious) Does anyone know anyone in the St. Louis/St. Charles area who can dreadlock a white guys hair?

Please save the cultural appropriation scolding. Anyone can wear their hair however they choose, its not harming anyone and I respect all cultures. If anyone can recommend a stylist who can dreadlock white hair please let me know. Thank you.

Affordable Vets

I noticed my dog licking his private area a lot lately. Upon inspection he has a sore down there. I’m not sure what is going on but I want to get it checked out. I don’t exactly have a million dollars to shell out. Would you guys please drop your recommendations for affordable vets in the area.

Idk if this kinda post is allowed in here, but a very social cat appeared at my doorstep tonight, and I'm hoping to maybe track down the potential owner! Very sweet kitty, and super social/talkative. The cat is moving too much for me to sex what sex it is, but if anyone has any information, please DM so we can get them to safety!

Highway K gets worse everyday..

Its a parking lot day after day. Is there any way to fix it? I don't want to use it but have to for commute. Its parallel roads- mid rivers and bryan are not as bad. But they all connect to the same bigger highways or mexico. So why is K the worst.. Is it because of walmart? Yet mid rivers has the mall or target and traffic is smoother. The worst part of K is the bridge after N. Short green lights do not help either. Is there any side roads they could build to ease traffic to other places? I don't see how anyone can get anywhere or be on time with that road congestion..

DWB?

Just a heads up to the community — this evening between approximately 7:30–7:50 p.m., near the Missouri Children’s Division office area, I experienced a road rage incident involving a driver who reversed his vehicle toward mine, swerved close to my car, and yelled multiple racial slurs and profanities. The driver appeared intoxicated.

Please stay aware of your surroundings while driving in the area, especially during evening hours. Hate-based harassment and aggressive driving behavior should be taken seriously.

Worst Potholes in the County

Where are the worst potholes in St Charles County?

My vote is the driveway just east of McDonalds at Mexico and Salt Lick. I dont know who needs to fix it. The property owner? St. Peters? The county? There's two potholes, one at least a foot wide. And there's barely room for two cars. But, that's the easiest way to get out of McDonalds after going through the drive-thru.

St. Charles County School Board Elections - SB1002

Yes, I used AI on the original post to make it easier to read. I didn't know it would annoy so many people! lol. Here's my orginal. Enjoy!

Back on March 9, 2026, the St. Charles County Council passed Resolution 26-04 asking the Missouri legislature to support this bill. The resolution was sponsored by Council Members Tim Baker and Joe Brazil.

SB 1002 ONLY applies to school districts in St. Charles County. It was originally written to affect the entire state, but lawmakers narrowed it down so it targets just us. Yesterday, on the final day of session, the Missouri House sent SB 1002 to Governor Kehoe’s desk. The bill actually failed the first vote on the House floor. Then lawmakers brought it back up for reconsideration, and it passed on the second attempt.

Here’s what SB 1002 would change:

  • Moves St. Charles County school board elections from April to the November general election
  • Changes school board terms from 3 years to 4 years
  • Allows party affiliation labels on school board ballots
  • Requires school tax issues to appear on the November ballot too

School board elections are supposed to stay focused on local issues, students, teachers, budgets, and curriculum. Moving these races to November puts them right in the middle of partisan statewide and national politics. Another concern is money. November elections are expensive. Smaller local candidates don’t have the same fundraising ability as larger political campaigns, and many community voices could easily get lost in the noise. Local elections happen in April so voters can focus specifically on local issues instead of everything competing for attention during a major election cycle.

SB1002 on State House Docket Today! CALL YOUR REPS!!!

Throughout this legislative session, politicians in Jefferson City have continued efforts to weaken public education. We have seen public schools shortchanged in the state budget, more taxpayer dollars shifted to private schools, and now an attempt to make school board elections partisan and move them to the November ballot.

School board elections in Missouri have traditionally remained nonpartisan and are held during municipal elections so voters can focus on local candidates and local school issues outside of the noise and cost of November election cycles. These are volunteer, unpaid positions, and candidates should not be expected to raise the kind of money needed to compete in partisan November elections.

SB1002 would change that by making school board elections partisan and moving school board races, along with bond and levy issues, to the November general election. What is especially concerning is that this version of the bill specifically targets only school districts in St. Charles County.

This is not what many St. Charles voters, parents, and educators want for our schools.
