Silly question, is SPF 30 enough?

I've done some research, but would love to hear from other people. I want to use the CeraVe Tinted SPF 30 (it is in a paler shade that most price-effective products don't offer).

I usually go for SPF 40-50, but wanted to give this product a try. I don't live somewhere sunny and usually wear a hat.

Thanks

Suncream

Does anyone know of a suncream that doesn’t feel like slathering your body is butter?

Just really one that isn’t so gross to wear and doesn’t leave yellow stains (I can live with that one though)

If You’re Heading to the Beach…

I cannot fathom why people wait until they’re on the beach to apply sunscreen. If you take the time to read instructions, sunscreen should be applied 15 minutes before exposure. More importantly, when you spray that crap on you, it also blows all over other people. Absolutely inconsiderate, with a helping of stupid on top. That is all…

Stickiest, goopiest, most miserably resilient sunscreen around

I’m looking for a sunscreen that can survive multiple hours of absolute acid sweat without dripping off. I don’t care if I look like a ghost, have greasy skin, or otherwise look ridiculous. I do long running and riding and need something that will stick on all day. I’m fine to reapply but many of the U.S. sunscreens I’ve tried I still tan through very rapidly even within a 2 hour windows. I would LOVE to be struggling to scrape it off in the shower after I finish

I’ve had the most success with Riemann P20 kids and ordered a liter of it but it’s cost prohibitive to use regularly because I live in the US. I have a suspicion a think mineral sunscreen is my best bet, I’ve tried blue lizard mineral kids SPF 50 and it seems ok but id love to know if you have any more disgusting, repulsive goop to try out thats avalible within the U.S.

Just launched Burnie: A free, private UV index & sunscreen countdown timer for iOS with zero ads or tracking [Free]

Hey r/iOSApps community,

Quick summary of the app based on the sub rules:
* A – Answer: Solves sunscreen guesswork by calculating a dynamic UV-based protection countdown using the Monk skin scale.
* B – Better: Privacy-first (no tracking/no ads), uses a clean Bento-grid UI instead of medical fear tactics, and features an advanced non-linear degradation formula.
* C – Cost: Completely Free (no ads, no IAPs). Link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/burnie-smart-uv-protection/id6770673915

***

I just flipped the switch on Burnie. I built this side project because I constantly find myself getting sunburned, and after seeing skin cancer impact my own family, I wanted to stop guessing with sun safety. I wanted to build something straightforward that provides actual scientific guidance based on live UV data.

The app checks your local UV index, maps it against your skin profile using the scientific Monk Scale, and runs a real-time protection countdown the moment you log your sunscreen application.

Behind the scenes on how the math works:
The countdown isn't just a simple, linear timer. It uses a fine-tuned calculation that assumes your sunscreen degrades dynamically over time based on actual UV exposure levels. I also built in a conservative safety margin to automatically account for natural wear and tear from clothes, sweating, or moving around.

A few intentional choices I made while building it:

* Privacy First: It is built natively on iOS 17 with SwiftData. Absolutely everything stays entirely local on your device. There is no user registration, no data collection, and no ad networks. It doesn't track your location; it merely uses your current coordinates locally to fetch the exact UV data.
* Clean UI: I deliberately avoided scary medical charts or fear-based warnings. Instead, it uses a clean Bento-grid layout with an ambient background that shows your current shield status at a quick glance.
* Smart Nudges: It sends lightweight local notifications exactly when your calculated protection layer degrades under your current local UV conditions.

The app is completely free to download. I am just trying to get the name out there right now and grab some real-world feedback from fellow builders.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the design or the countdown system!

SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen Recommendations?

I’m unsure if what I’m looking for actually exists. I live in the US and usually gravitate towards European or Japanese brands.

I’m looking for a clear (no/minimal white cast, NO tint) mineral or at least not chemical sunscreen with minimal ingredients that’s good for sensitive skin and does not separate into weird goo. No sprays though!

I was looking at the attitude stick ones but I’ve never used stick version and it has mixed reviews. I was using Sun Tribe (unfortunately tinted, not a fan) but one day despite shaking it, it had separated the liquid and consistency was so gross I started gagging and can’t bring myself to use it again. Then I fell for the Shiseido Mineral Clear but learned it’s not actually mineral and it’s like a combination.

So yeah, thank you for any recommendations!

Honest review for Re'equil Ultra Matte Dry Touch Sunscreen

I have extremely oily and acne prone skin, like skin so oily you could extract oil and fry an egg with it on hot summer days. Residing in a humid and tropical country gave me a hard time finding just the right sunscreen for my skin type. Most sunscreens either gave me acne, or felt too greasy, or left a white cast, or worse, made my skin darker than it already was.

Few months ago, I saw someone suggest Re'equil Ultra Matte Dry Touch Sunscreen and it's been the best thing in my life so far. It doesn't add to any of the forementioned problems and feels absolutely light weight. I haven't tanned and the sunscreen just blends so well that I can wear layers of makeup without worrying too much about sunscreen sweating off. It stays for a very long time and doesn't need reapplication.

However, the only issue I faced is piling, I usually double cleanse my face to remove the sunscreen off completely. Also it can make your face too dry, I faced moderate dryness as my skin is already too oily, but if you have moderately oily skin or normal skin, I'd not suggest this sunscreen. After removing the sunscreen I always make sure to apply a hydrating moisturiser so that my skin remains hydrated and doesn't get flaky or dry off completely. But overall, other than the drying and piling problem, this has been the best sunscreen. I will give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.

Help with finding a sunscreen

Hi there,
I need some help finding a good sunscreen. I have been prescribed the topical Cabtreo to treat cystic acne and my doctor say I should wear sunscreen everyday because of it. The topical is causing all my skin to flake off and no matter how much I moisturize there’s still some flakiness. I have tried the blue lizard sensitive sunscreen but it is super greasy, has a white cast, and is clinging to my flaking skin. Does anyone have sunscreen suggestions that don’t leave a white cast and that won’t stick to my dry skin leaving whiteness around it?

Spray sunscreen snapping hair tie

EDITED WITH ANSWER: Oil degrades rubber! Thanks everyone!

I applied a quick spray of Sunbum spray sunscreen to the parts in both of my daughter’s hair. Within minutes, their rubber hair ties snapped and unraveled from around their hair. They didn’t dissolve, just a clean break. They both had 2 hairties in, and they all snapped multiple times throughout the night as I kept replacing them (I only applied the sunscreen once). I haven’t used new shampoo, the hairties are also not new or too tight and it wasn’t too hot. The sunscreen was the only new thing.

Anyone have any thoughts?
I’m terrified of what I just spray on my babies heads….

Holy Grail Sunscreen Rec?

I’ve tried so many sunscreens but struggle to find the one for me. I have 3 criteria:

  1. spf of at least 40

  2. clean ish ingredients (no fragrances, no homosalate, etc)

  3. looks as invisible as possible (I know this is hard with criteria #2). Basically, mineral sunscreen tends to look super white on me, and tinted looks orange. I’m pretty pale. If only there was something like the clear gel sunscreens with no homosalate.

I know this may be tricky, but I’m open to any suggestions. Thanks!

Tinted Mineral Sunscreen

Hey everyone, looking for a good tinted mineral sunscreen that doubles well as makeup. I was on the hunt for the perfect foundation, but realistically I won’t reach for foundation on a daily basis. I’ve tried color science and tower 28. I really like both, but am open to any other recommendations. Skin is combo in summertime and I have rosacea/slightly reactive skin.

I ordered this Geek & Gorgeous "day cream," which is supposed to be sunscreen with EU sun filters. Any thoughts on this one regarding effectiveness and eye sensitivity?

Does extreme heat decrease the efficacy of sunscreen?

Since Europe has been deep in this crazy heat. If you’re carrying around your sunscreen all day in the heat or if you live in a non-AC place and your sunscreen is stored in 35+ heat… is this bad for its efficacy? Let’s discuss.

best sunscreen for working outdoors in peak uv?

hi everyone !! i am someone who struggles to wear sunscreen every day, but i need to this summer because i'll be outside on my feet for hours under the sun at work

looking for a sunscreen with as much protection as possible (pa++++) that will withstand sweating / physical activity in the afternoon. i'm in the states but would prefer to purchase an asian or european sunscreen since i assume their filters are better? longevity is also important to me since i don't think ill have time at work to reapply every couple hours. and lmk where to order your fav asian/european sunscreens so i know im getting the real deal !! face sunscreen is most important but i should honestly get a good body sunscreen too

while i'm here, i would also appreciate anyone's recommendations for upf clothing !! i am required to wear black clothing at work, so im trying to figure out the best balance between limiting exposure (higher coverage clothing so less skin is exposed) and making sure i don't overheat due to wearing all black while working outside all afternoon

thank you everyone for helping me stay safe at work this summer !!!!!

Best sunscreens/ ingredients for melasma?

I'm looking to see if I can find a better mineral sun. Before somebody comes at me about mineral sunscreens, as I understand they protect better. If you have molasma already.

With that said, I understand the zinc, it's wonderful, but it also needs to have titanium dioxide as well. Both of these are reflective. I'm just reading now that also iron.Oxide is a must.If you have malasma, that it will also block or shield more light coming in?

I'm curious how that would be.So if the zinc and titanium are already mirroring and blocking the sun on the face?

Currently, I have been using for the last 5 years. Blue lizard baby sunscreen, it is thick. It is white, it is pasty, I rub it in till it disappears, and then I usually put more on where it is white on my face to block more out. I also wear a hat when i'm outdoors.

This has 10% zinc 5% titanium dioxide

I'm going to try hello bello kids

This has 23% zinc

Neither of them have iron oxide

I'm going to continue looking for another titanium dioxide.Sunscreen Because I will say that my melasma has gotten better This summer when I started using the blue lizard again versus just the korean sunscreens. And many times I layer the b o j and then add the blue lizard over it

If anybody has information or like to help discuss some things, thank you

I need a mineral sunscreen and I'm looking for recs

Sunscreen reccs for oily, fungal acne prone skin

I've been looking for a sunscreen that works for my oily, fungal acne prone skin for years and have had no luck :( I initially wanted it to be something that was by a cruelty free brand but I have even given up on that as to not refine my options even more.

I currently use the COSRX Ultra-Light Invisible Sunscreen (which is FA safe and non comedogenic) and the finish is fine I guess but it pills horribly if I use 2 fingers worth so I find myself using less which sort of defeats the purpose, and then I also have to always let it sink in for an hour or so before I start my makeup. Having to let it sink in is my main issue with it.

My requirements for a new sunscreen:

  • works for oily skin//not greasy
  • doesn't feel heavy and doesn't increase sweating in hot weather
  • doesn't require too long to sink in before applying making and doesn't pill under makeup
  • fungal acne safe
  • non comedogenic
  • preferably not scented too strong

Sunscreens that I've tried that didn't work for me:

  • COSRX Ultra-Light Invisible Sunscreen
  • Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics
  • Innisfree Hyaluronic Acid Water Sun Gel
  • Purito Daily Soft Touch Sunscreen

• Round Lab Birch Juice Sunscreen

If anyone has any recommendations please let me know! I live in the UK for reference but don't mind importing any sunscreens here either.
