Using Custom Solar as a Range Extender for my Tesla

I am on a solo expedition across the Americas with my Tesla Model X, which I have equipped with 300 watts of solar on my hood. Hypermiling to the extreme to make the impossible distance possible…

The solar panels allow me to also Overland for extended periods of time and not use the HV, powering my fridge, starlink, and kitchen….

Currently in Argentina, questions, comments, concerns all welcome!

All the best, Sandro & Beluga

Any Roof Cover That Actually Blocks 100% of Sunlight?

Has anyone found a roof cover that completely blocks out sunlight and provides full privacy?

The one I bought only reduces the sunlight, despite the product photos making it look like a complete blackout.

anyone considering camping in the model YL

I’m considering getting a new car, but wanted to have the model YL have a bet for the range.

It’s currently spec at 325 miles whereas the long range for the model Y is 356 miles. Would you prefer the extra space or the additional range?

KingCamp BOUNDLESS AIR3 Inflatable SUV Tent

First family camping trip with our new KingCamp SUV tent. There weren’t many reviews available but it worked out very well paired with our EV9!

Great construction/durable, fast set-up and takedown, good insulation/hatch seal, darkened bedroom partition with windows/skylight. Lots of great features and creature comforts. 6-8 person tent.

Sleeping in front passenger seat?

Planning on camping with my son soon in our new model Y. Just got a mattress for the back and tried it out today. There is no way we can both fit back there. I'm 6'2" about 215lbs and he's only a little smaller than me. Has anyone experimented with sleeping in the front passenger seat? Obviously I know it's possible I have passengers nap there all the time on road trips. But any tips for making it a slightly better night sleep? I put the seat all the way back and all the way reclined and I can basically extend my legs all the way, just obviously at an angle. Any products to make this more viable? Thanks in advance.

First attempt at custom mattress

So I decided to buy a 10cm tri-fold single memory foam mattress (£69 from Amazon) and u zipped the bottom two sections and removed the foam. Trimming them to fit neatly as a single bed.

The top third is 75cm wide and tapers down to 60cm at the feet. The top section I am planning on putting a 4mm thick HDPE plastic sheet to give my head more support at the top end.

Even folded it is quite bulky, but I won’t mind that if it is comfy.

Might take this and my inflatable mattress on my next road test just in case.

Would love to know your thoughts!

Our first Tesla Model 3 camping trip in the Swiss Alps 🏔️

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to share my husband’s and my first camping trip with our Tesla Model 3. We decided to escape Europe’s heatwave and headed into the Swiss Alps and wow, waking up in the mountains at around 2,000 meters above sea level is something I can’t even put into words. It was absolutely incredible.

We stayed for two nights, and I have to say the Model 3 was surprisingly comfortable to sleep in. We’re both fairly tall (183 cm / 6 ft), and neither of us had any issues with the length. The width is probably the only thing we’d change - it could be a little wider, but since we sleep close together anyway, it wasn’t really a problem.

Camping Mode is such a game changer. We set the cabin temperature to 19.5°C (67°F), and even running it all night, we only lost around 10–15% battery per night. Totally worth it for a comfortable night’s sleep!

For anyone wondering about our setup:
Mattress: Decathlon AG Ultim Comfort (200 × 115 cm)
Camping gear (chairs, gas stove, etc.): Decathlon
Pillows and duvet: from home
Privacy shades: Amazon

The mattress was really easy to inflate and pack away, and we both slept comfortably.

Overall, we’re honestly impressed with how well the Model 3 worked as a camper. It made for such a unique experience, and we’re already planning another camping trip later this summer.🌞

We almost packed up and went home on Day 1... (Our first family Tesla camping trip)

Hey everyone,

We just got back from our first ever family camping trip in our Model Y on the east coast of Scotland, and I’ll be totally honest... Day 1 was a bit of a sh*t show!

We arrived in the middle of a heatwave and were completely exposed to 19mph gusts of wind. Because my wife had to keep our nearly 13-year-old spaniel secure on a lead and stop him from overheating, pitching our Tentsla tailgate tent was for the most part, a completely solo job. In my rush to get the tent up so he had shade, I didn't fully inflate the air beams. No matter what I did with the guy ropes, the structure was warped, the wind was relentless, and at one point we both had that moment where you read each others mind, and we knew what we both thought, "Let’s just pack this down, get in the car, and go home. It’s not worth it."

We stuck it out, but between the wind and worrying about our senior dog getting too cold when the temperature dropped at night, we got barely 3 hours of sleep.

Thankfully, Day 2 was a completely new day. The weather broke, we relaxed, and we actually got to enjoy the slow life. But it really hit home the logistical problems of camping with dependents. Because our dog needed the entire boot (trunk) to himself to travel safely, our rear passenger seats and footwells became our main gear storage.

It made me realise how much harder this must be if you camp with a newborn or toddlers. If you have kids in those back seats, you lose a massive storage space. How do those of you with kids or big dogs manage the packing and organisation? Do you find a roof box or hitch rack is mandatory, or have you found a way to compress everything into the frunk, sub-trunk & trunk?

On the plus side, we were using the new Fruble Lite kit for the first time on this trip. I knew it would be an upgrade over our Ultralite setup, but I wasn't prepared for how much more convenient it actually makes camping in the Model Y. Having that massive slide out storage drawer and the extra space underneath the platform completely changed the game. We used to live out of bags when tailgate tent camping but now we can live out of the Fruble 😂

Our biggest takeaway from the weekend is definitely patience. If you arrive at a campsite and the weather is brutal or stress levels are high, just turn pet mode on, sit down, and have a cold drink or some food before you even think about touching a single peg. It seemed impossible in the moment, but pushing past that stress of Day 1 was so worth it. By Day 3, we didn’t want to leave.

I'd love to hear your worst Day 1 setup stories. Have you ever actually thrown in the towel and driven home, or did you stick it out?

(p.s I documented the whole chaotic setup and how we managed the space on our channel if anyone wants to see the visual layout of how it all worked and some more of our old boy, Alfie :) https://youtu.be/N6pWt8PL_T0

First trial run!

Did my first ever Tesla Model 3 car camping trip. Just local. Used an inflatable SUV mattress but only inflated 2/3rds. Slept so brilliantly I am definitely going to do more.

As I do this solo, I just put down the larger side in the back. With the driver seat forward I have a great single seat for getting changed and makes it far easier to get into bed.

Tesla Camping with a baby

I’m planning a week long Tesla camping trip next month with my wife and our 10 month old grand daughter in our 2026 MYP.

The wife and I will sleep on a Snuuzu and I’ve made a base for a baby mattress that sits across the front seats.

We have had a couple test sleeps at home to iron out issues. During the first night, our grand daughter woke early, probably due to the col air from the front air vents. We now make sure the vents are angled upwards directing airflow to the ceiling and our grand daughter sleeps in long sleeves.

During our last test sleep, our grand daughter knocked front screen and turned the aircon on full cool. In a panic to silence the fan noise and dim the screen brightness, the snuuzu made contact with the rear screen and turned on the stereo at full volume.

I’m now planning to disable the rear screen and place the front screen in ‘clean screen’ mode to avoid unintentionally turning things on when we are trying to sleep.

I’ve also set the easy entry seat position to the same position as the camping profile, to avoid the front seat moving when the car is unlocked.

I also added switching off the front seat cooling to the camping set-up checklist and silencing the door lock sound.

Can you think of anything else that we should be doing before we turn in for the night?

will I be able to run a tesla model 3 for 2 nights with camp mode running a/c to sleep in for when it’s hot outside and not kill all of the battery?

I won’t need to run the a/c for 8 hours straight.
Just for when the sun comes up and I need to run a/c for the last few hours (using it for a campsite where I will be sleeping 6am-2pm during the day when the sun comes up)

The reason I ask is because I have never camped in a Tesla before

If I do this, will I still have enough battery to get to a charging station 1 hour away after?

Why did Havnby reduce warranty from 5yr to 3yr? Too many failures after 3yr?

I am trying to select the most comfortable and reliable/durable mattress for the Tesla Juniper.

It is concerning seeing the drop in warranty on orders from June 1st.

Makes me now reconsider and want to research further.

Any thoughts and suggestions from anyone?

A Simple Tesla Camping Tip: Use Frozen Water Bottles Instead of Loose Ice

I’ve been freezing a few bottles of water at home and using them instead of loose ice in my Cooler Y.

It works well for road trips and camping:

  • No melted ice sloshing around
  • Food stays cleaner and drier
  • The bottles don’t take up wasted space
  • Once they thaw, you have cold drinking water

I usually leave the bottles in the freezer for about six hours before loading them into the cooler.

Simple, clean, and no power needed.

Does anyone else use frozen water bottles instead of loose ice?

If you're thinking about taking a Model Y to the canyon, read this first

Just wanted to share my experience after driving my Model Y to the canyon.

To be honest, I kind of regretted bringing the Model Y once I got there. The ground clearance is pretty low, and there were several rocky sections where I was constantly worried about scraping the bottom. I'm also not the most confident off-road driver, so there were a couple of moments where I seriously considered turning around.

I'm glad I didn't though, because the scenery was absolutely worth it.

For packing, I kept most of my gear in the roof box, and the things I used most stayed on the passenger seat. Since I was traveling solo, that setup worked perfectly fine.

That said, I probably wouldn't recommend this trip for solo female travelers. The area is incredibly remote, with almost no people around. If something goes wrong, help could be a long way away.

Camping overnight also wasn't as enjoyable as I expected. There were no showers, no proper restrooms where I stayed, and once it got dark, there was basically no lighting. It just didn't feel very safe staying there alone.

If I were to do it again, I'd probably just spend the afternoon exploring the canyon and drive back before sunset instead of camping overnight.

Even though the trip didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped, the scenery was absolutely breathtaking and made it all worthwhile. One of my favorite moments was watching groups of off-road vehicles making their way through the canyon below. It was such an awesome sight. I'd definitely come back someday, but next time I might bring a RAV4 instead.

Page, AZ is a great place to take a multi-day Tesla camping + hiking trip

We realized we hadn't been on a road trip in a while, so we went down to Page, AZ. Page has a Tesla supercharger in town, so it's a pretty convenient place to Tesla camp with a lot of cool things to do around it. Our favorite thing was renting kayaks, and riding them a couple miles down river to some really cool slot canyons.

We set up camp at some dispersed camping about 15 minutes northwest of Page across the Utah border, then took day trips to go hike and do stuff, conveniently charging in Page as we passed through it.

Mattress for Y

I’m considering a mattress for my legacy Y. I see a lot of recommendations for Lost Horizons. How much better is the Flatfit design? On Amazon it’s showing out of stock. I don’t have any current plans, but it would suck if it didn’t arrive until August.

EV charging

I’m going on a 3 week roadtrip in August and will spend 3 days in glacier. Camping 2 nights in Apgar and one night in many glacier.

I have a model Y Tesla. Looking for pointers from those that have traveled the area with limited charging options
