Am I doing anything wrong or am I simply using the wrong camera?

I'm a birdwatcher and I bought a thermal camera (TOPDON TOO1 max) because I wanted to spot birds in the trees at night. Now it's 10pm and I can only spot people.

Uhm. Help please? Should I send the thermal camera back and buy a monocular or am I using/setting it in the wrong way?

Thanks in advance. I'm new to thermal cameras and I'm not sure I bought the right one

The new thermal scope arrived

A few weeks ago I got a DNT Hydra hs219 so I could see the raccoons at night without having to place lanterns around the property. As I was choosing which entry level scope to get, DNT and Goyojo were two that appeared in searches most frequently. The Texas Plinking review is ultimately what sold me on the DNT, but I was still curious about how the Goyojo compared.

So now I have the DNT for the 357 magnum lever action, and the Goyojo GRS225RF for the 22lr bolt action. So far the Goyojo is impressive. The packaging was nice, the shipping was fast, it was about the same price as the Hydra, it has a built in laser rangefinder, the app connects and works well to transfer pictures and videos, I like the image adjustability, and to my eye the image looks clearer than the Hydra.

I'll go to the range tomorrow to zero it and test it thoroughly to get it dialed in and be confident with it before I do any hunting with it, but so far it looks like a great, especially for the price. For my use case of hunting raccoons and groundhogs from about 75 yards or less, it looks like it will do just fine. I'd also like to test the battery life compared to the hydra. Maybe I'll do a more detailed comparison after using the two for a few more weeks.

Is there anyway to get around a thermal camera

Theoretically if i were to build a house in the woods I i didn't want my pesky government finding such house in the woods because I'm not playing them for it to be there is there any way that I could block them from seeing me? Is it possible for me to have a fire without them clearly seeing me?

LWIR UAV thermal imaging with wide-FOV optics: real field observations

Hello everyone,

I've been testing a LWIR UAV thermal setup with a wide-FOV lens in outdoor inspection scenarios and wanted to share a few quick observations.

Key observations

  • Wide-FOV improves coverage, but reduces recognition confidence faster at distance
  • Detection is still possible beyond expected range, but identification becomes unreliable sooner
  • Atmospheric conditions (humidity / haze) affect contrast more than resolution in some cases
  • Motion + small targets make interpretation harder than static specs suggest
  • Lens choice strongly impacts how operators perceive thermal detail, not just FOV

Questions

  • How do you balance wide coverage vs reliable identification in UAV thermal setups?
  • Do you rely more on optics selection or post-processing for clarity?
  • At what point do you switch from detection-focused to recognition-focused configurations?

If anyone has field experience with similar setups, would be great to compare notes.

What do you think about armor mini 20 T pro?

Greetings,

I used Cat s61 in the past. Later used the ulefone armor 27t. The phone was so so. But the thermal camera had some issues like not showing proper colors, some times when you capture a thermal image, it doesn't show in the image saved in galary the same colors you captured.

The Cat s61 was better in this aspect but had its own issues.

Am thinking of a more compact phone so armor mini 20t comes to my mind but not sure how the performance of the phone in general would be and the thermal camera in particular.

Appreciating your insights and experience

New Rule: No videos of hunting kill-shots or any other death or gore.

If hunting is your thing and you want to show off an incredible shot that you made, please feel free to do so over at r/ThermalHuntingVideos or r/ThermalHunting.

Something that has been brought up frequently via modmail is: Not every user of this sub wants to start their day off by seeing Bambi going from biology to physics.

Since others have now created subs dedicated specifically to hunting with thermography and videos of the same, I'm introducing rule #3 today.

The discussion of thermal weapons optics is still welcome here.

To reiterate the purpose and rules of this sub:

This subreddit is a place for users of thermal imaging technology to discuss and learn about thermal imaging, share pointers and techniques, and share images.

RULE #1: No shilling.

RULE #2: No AliExpress links or discount codes.

RULE #3: No videos of kill-shots or any other death or gore. Discussion of thermal hunting optics is welcome here, but not everyone wants to start their day by seeing Bambi go from biology to physics. If you want to show off a video of your amazing kill, we encourage you to do so on r/ThermalHuntingVideos or r/ThermalHunting.

Is 256 thermal resolution good enough for an entry level thermal device for animal spotting?

My main use is just to honestly mess around with the technology since I think it’s cool. I plan to bring it with me on hikes or to use at night to see animals.

Monitoring Industrial Site Across the Street?

I'm looking to set up a thermal camera on my 4th floor balcony to monitor an industrial site across the street. I'm curious how its operations affects the temperature in the surrounding area. I'd want this camera set up indefinitely (connected to power source, within wifi range). Budget up to $4k US.

Ideally, this data would eventually be streamed online.

Any advice on what to look for in a thermal camera, recommendations on cameras, and any other tips?

Total thermal camera noob, so TYIA.

Help needed

Please help me tune my images to look like a professional thermal photo where the background is completely dark and you can only see the temperature gradient on the main target in the middle. Any free/ affordable software to process my thermal images? How does one tune the images so that they have a more defined outline of the target? Thank you.

Can we talk about banning violent content here?

I really love everything related to the topic, except the hunting stuff. I think there are other subreddits more suited for this kind of content.

Thermal grizzly phasesheet

Hello everyone. I wanted to know if thermal grizzly phasesheet is ptm7950? It doesnt state anywhere in the description on amazon if its ptm7950. The other pick does state that it is but I like the convenience of amazon as it comes as soon as tomorrow and returns are super easy.

Was going to link for both but might break guide lines.

Somebody is living in the tree :D

Yo! Had a fun time in local forest playing around with DIY-thermal and accidently noticed bright glowing inside a tree! There was also a fist-sized hole one feet below. Does anybody know what kind of animal/bird can it be? :3
