Do NOT go to AMPM

Last night, five of us went to a club. 4 Asians and one friend who is brown. We were just waiting in line like everyone else. A tall white security guard came up, immediately singled out only our brown friend and told him to leave the line with NO explanation. When he calmly asked why, the white security started yelling and being aggressive. We were then told to move to another line, so we did. After waiting again, the same white security came back and again refused entry ONLY to our brown friend also referring him as LOSER. This is when the situation got escalated. The tall white security grabbed our brown friend, dragged him to the curb, and started repeatedly PUNCHING him in the face. 4 or 5 other staff did NOTHING to stop it. Instead, they RESTRAINED our friend’s arms to his back while he was being attacked and grabbed the rest of us when we tried to break off the fight. One of our other friends was also grabbed and assaulted and one of the girl was pushed to the ground. The witness referring to the staff there stated that my girl friend pushed the white security first which makes absolutely no m sense. This was extremely disrespectful, unprofessional, rude and completely unacceptable. It honestly felt racist in how my only non-asian friend was singled out and being called LOSER without given any reason. We are also extremely angry when one of the owner Bennyyoung briefly came over and asked what happened, but it was performative as he didn’t actually follow up, didn’t investigate properly and never came back for any updates or to address anything further. Police and paramedics were called, but the police don’t do much and it seemed like they were used to this kind of situation and that they were ready to deal with it in favor of the club.

here are 3 FREE events today that are worth a look - July 1 Canada Day

It's a hot and humid one today, so here are 3 interesting and heat safe events for Wednesday July 1, 2026:

Outdoor Pools
Christie Pits, St Clair, + Sunnyside | until 11:45p

Grab your swim gear and head to a pool. It's gonna feel like 40° with the humidity, it the perfect day. There are 8 pools open late for 2 days including the 3 pool I like below.

Alex Duff at Christie Pits
Giovanni Caboto on St Clair W
Sunnyside Gus Ryder on Lakeshore

Here's the full list of city outdoor pools and water play (ie. splash pads)

World Cup Today: England vs DR Congo 12p | USA vs Bosnia and Herzegovina 8p

The US plays on Canada Day and we're playing our next game on Independence Day. If you want to watch England, go indoors. 12p in this sun is not worth going outside. But tonight, with the sun almost set, it'll be a great night to watch at one of the public places. Today, Humber College launches their outdoor viewing parties. It's the last 2 days for Harbourfront Centre's Canada House and today Pride House closes too.

Scadding Court and Columbus Centre and more places are all having watch parties for free. For details, check the linked post.

Canada Day around the City

There are day parties at Woodbine Park, Queen's Park, and St James Park.

Where to see Fireworks tonight

Click here to see them all or check out the separate post I made lists all the locations with fireworks tonight

the local's dozen weekly post just dropped with a dozen or so of the more interesting events this week. If you like what you see here, sign up for the newsletter or share it on socials!

Gauging interest: Starting a "Beer & Book" club in downtown Toronto? 🍻📖

Hey everyone,

I’ve been living in Toronto for a while now, and while it's an amazing city, we all know it can sometimes be a bit of a grind to meet new people and build a solid social circle outside of work.

I’m a 35 year old Irish guy, living downtown, and I’m looking to start a monthly "Beer & Book" club. The concept is pretty simple: we pick a great book, meet up at a local brewery downtown once a month, grab a pint (or a cider/non-alcoholic option), and chat about it.

The Vibe: Completely low-pretension and high-engagement. You don’t need a literature degree, and you don’t need to have deep, academic takes. It's an excuse to read some books we actually want to read, support great local spots, have a laugh, and meet some new people. If you didn't quite finish the book but still want to come out for the social side, you're welcome!

How it’ll work:

  • When: Once a month, likely a mid-week evening (Tuesday or Wednesday) when breweries are a bit quieter and we can actually hear each other talk.
  • Where: Rotating through local spots across downtown/West End (places like Bellwoods, Burdock, Left Field Liberty Village, Collective Arts, etc.).
  • The Books: To keep it accessible and budget-friendly, I’m planning on leveraging the Toronto Public Library’s "Book Club in a Bag" service, so we can get free copies for the group. Open to all genres - gripping narrative non-fiction, fiction, sci-fi, etc.

Interested or want to join? To keep the conversation flowing and make sure we can all sit around a table together, I'm thinking of capping the active meetups at around 12–15 people per session, but if there's a lot of interest we can easily figure out a rotation or system.

If this sounds like you would be interested in, drop a comment below! If we get a core group interested, I’ll set up a simple group chat (WhatsApp) so we can vote on the first book, pick a date for August, and lock in our first brewery.

Cheers! 🍻
