My thoughts on the Yakima Valley

I came here on a travel healthcare assignment, and read alllll the threads regarding Yakima and the surrounding area. So I figured I had better share my experience for others. I worked in Sunnyside, but lived in Yakima.

I honestly did not mind Yakima - HOWEVER, when I say Yakima, I think I really mean Union Gap... The Union Gap shopping area near Costco is safe and nice. The stores along S 1st street is a pretty good area too.

  • Hotels: The hotels I'd recommend area-wise would be the Holiday Inn Express Union Gap, Home2Suites, and Tru Yakima Airport. The only one I stayed in was actually into Selah, the Quality Inn Selah North Park - I liked the decor and it was a nice area.
  • Dog Care: I had two Rover dog walkers that were hands down the best dog walkers I have ever had before, in any of the places I have lived. Would recommend them to literally anyone and I would take them with me if I could. The Yakima Canine Club for doggy daycare was also great, but definitely on the pricier side.
  • Coffee Shops: My favorite was Outback Espresso. Their daily redbull specials were tasty, consistently good, and affordable. I also visited the High West on Summitview a few times, and it was good too, just out of the way.
  • Restaurants: Mel's Diner, Major's Burgers, Don Cheo's, Denny's Union Gap (I didn't eat out often, but I went to Mel's 2x, liked it both times. Don Cheo's I went like 5x, it was pretty good too. Nice big burritos). Not in Yakima, but I loved El Kiosko food truck for the drinks and esquites in Sunnyside - it isn't even on maps, but it is right by across the street from Ace Hardware).
  • Surrounding Areas: Sunnyside and Yakima are the same in different fonts, both felt sketchy to me. I was always careful in the main part of Yakima and never stayed long, or out late. Naches is cute, small. Ellensburg is not that far away, I just wouldn't want to go over the pass very often. Kinship Trail Rides in Ellensburg is awesome. Prosser is also a pretty cute place, although a solid 45-1 hr away from Yakima.

Overall, I don't think the area is horrible horrible, and would likely come back if an opportunity came up.

I hope this can help others who may be looking at Yakima and the area but is nervous about Yakima's negative "ratings".

Traveling with a recruiter vs company

I have been through a few travel contracts so far and have been going through a third party company with a recruiter to help me get my contracts. Though two clinics I worked at, their company offers in house travel work. Full time with the company, PTO, other benefits, etc.

I want to know of others experiences if they have gone down that route of working for just the one company and doing internal travel work vs going through the third party.

Is there much a difference in how to go about finding contracts, flexibility of work with being able to pick your contract location and duration, etc.?

Took NPTE in TX but want to get licensed in CA--what should I do? (pls help)

Unfortunately I thought that in order to get my license, I have to get it through the state I took it in (TX) as I was able to take it there in April unlike in CA (which has to wait until July). So I started the TX application and paid the fee ( :( ) which was super dumb I know.

My question is: Am I able to apply for a CA license now after passing NPTE in TX without getting licensed in Tx first? I won't be working in TX.

My perception was that my NPTE pass wouldn't matter given that CA applicants cant take it til July, but I now see (or think) that doesn't matter.

Also I'm wondering if recruiters often reimburse for licensing (in the contract state)? from my understanding it depends on the agency, but wondering how common this is. Any tips for finding agencies would be nice too - I'm using Vivian to find them but I don't know if there's something else to do/something better.

any guidance helps. I need help so bad I feel like im in the dark :(((( Pls don't judge
