Localized patches after vacation: Overwatering, black layer, or fungus?

Hey everyone,

I just got back from vacation and left the lawn on an automatic irrigation schedule. Upon returning, I noticed these localized patches appearing (see attached photos) and I'm trying to figure out the exact cause to fix it.

I have a couple of theories, but I'd love to get your expert opinion:

Overwatering / Black Layer: I suspect the irrigation might have been overkill, leading to soil compaction, lack of oxygen, and potentially the start of some anaerobic black layer conditions / root rot.

Fungus: On the other hand, the combination of summer heat and constant moisture makes me worry it could be a fungal disease (like brown patch or similar).

What do you guys think looking at the pictures? Does this look like suffocation from overwatering, or does it have the hallmarks of a fungus?

Any advice on diagnostics or next steps to recover these areas would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Question re: compost for playable turf

Would it be possible to use a fine topdressing of compost (maybe spaced but regular applications) on turf for golf without serious repercussions? Is it too much of a risk for introducing pathogens and fungus? Does the compost need to be pulverized to maintain playability? Would a wide application of compost tea be possible?

TL;DR, is it possible to use compost as a regular treatment on turf used for golf, or other sports?

TifTuf Sod Panic

Removed tons of dirt from back yard, laser leveled for a flat surface with 1% slope and had 1400 sqft of tiftuf sod installed 11 days ago which was rolled after install. Now at the 11 day mark my sod is wavy/bumpy and looks like the surface of the moon. Hoping to hear its part of the initial normal rooting process, but my luck is never good. Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Burn marks in lawn

In Glasgow, Scotland. I have been gardening for this property for a few months. Scarified in spring and have been feeding since. Grass was looking good, but I took two weeks off and when I came back there were odd burnt patches sporadically over the lawn. Anyone have any idea what happened? The back lawn does not have these burn marks, and I've been treating them both the exact same.

Is this fungus? And what should I treat with?

I need to fertilize as well so unsure if I should fertilize or just worry about treating and repair. I’m in NJ. Grass is TTTF.

Brown patch or summer patch?

hi all,

I am what these rings on my annual bluegrass greens are. Western Washington/Seattle. Does it look like brown patch or summer patch? I do not have incubation facilities, we are a very small course. full sized BIC lighter for scale.

Ground size for turf cutter hire vs manual turf removal

I'm halfway through removing 40 sqm of sodden clay filled buffalo lawn and my back is hating me. Im committed to finishing as my technique keeps improving but when i include tip runs, it'll be two full days of hard labour.

Those who do this regularly, what size job is the tipping point where its worth the time and cost of hiring a turf cutter instead of manual removal?

Thinking about switching careers to something in turf management.

Hello all, I’ve been going through some rough times lately and have started to rethink about maybe doin something else with something I love more, golf. I am currently a student at a local cc to become a pilot, but the life is seemingly becoming far too stressful for me. Although I have no experience working for a grounds crew, I’d love to (I’m pretty sure atleast), as I always liked working with my hands and have a great attention to detail to make something look great. Anyways here are some q’s I have.

Are there any online programs or colleges that I should look into? I’ve heard penn state and lots of others but that depends on cost and if I can do them online.

How much can I reasonably look at making with a turf grass degree and maybe a job in the future as an assistant super or super?

Thanks everyone and give me all ya got on the industry

Looking for consultations pls

Hey all,

I'm not a superintendent — I'm a university student building a software tool for golf course turf management, and I've realized I've been building it based on assumptions instead of talking to the professionals who actually do the work.

I'm not here to sell anything. I genuinely just want to understand your world better. A few things I'd love your honest take on:

  • What's the most tedious or frustrating part of your daily/weekly routine that you wish was easier?
  • When you're diagnosing a problem on a green — disease, drought, whatever — what do you actually rely on? Experience, lab tests, gut, asking someone?
  • What turf tech or software have you tried that was useless or annoying, and why? (This is the most useful thing for me to hear.)
  • If a tool could save you time on one thing, what would you want it to be?

Bachelors vs Associates

I’m currently 22 years old and have completed one year of school. I know that turf management is what I want to do but i’m unsure of which type of degree is best for me/this industry. I plan on attending NC State no matter which route I take and I’ve heard good things about their associates program. The career I want to get in is the golf course route. Which degree level would you recommend pursuing?

Yellow dry-looking spots in grass

Can anyone tell me what the cause of this is and how to treat it? This is in central NJ.

We have a small dog that pees on the lawn. Could that be a factor?

Looking for work in the US of A

Hi, for a long time I’v been thinking about taking my nordic self to a new place carrier and life wise. I’m 24 years old and have been working in the industry (golf) for almost a decade. I’v gone to school for greenkeeping and I’m about to start in a superintendent’s program.

In the ten years working I’ve done quite a lot. Spraying, cutting, sharpening, irrigation (rainbird), planing, teaching the new guys and now I’v been working on automation and robotics for golf courses.

For now my plan is to do the superintendent program and after that I’m looking to go abroad and hopefully enroll to a superintendent program there.

My question for the guys in the US, how is the job market right now? I’m not looking for superintendent jobs or even assistant positions. Would love to continue working in robotics and automation.

Also with my skills would courses consider me and help me to move in to the US, insted of recruiting inside the states. Preferably would love to work on a course that hosts big tournaments (PGA, LIV, DP).

Would love know if I even have a chance making it in the US. Any tips on how to get into to the industry in the US would be greatly appreciated. Also recommendations on superintendents would be nice!

Sportsfield TDR

Hey everyone,

Are any of the sports fields guys using TDR at all? If so I’m wondering how many sports fields you manage? How often you’re taking readings?

I’m thinking of adding one to my arsenal but trying to figure out how to implement it to get the most out of it.

Any input would be great as I’ve never used a TDR.
