"Carpet cleaning"
I have lived in two apartments with Smile and noticed that every time I've signed they say that there's a mandatory carpet cleaning fee that automatically gets deducted from the security deposit upon move-out no matter what.
That by itself would be fair. But... every single time I have moved into a place, the carpets were filthy. I had been under the impression that you have to pay for the next tenant's carpet cleaning, but if that clearly isn't actually happening, where's the money actually going?
To be fair, the first time, I sent in a maintenance request and Smile sent someone for the carpet cleaning. But, I feel like I shouldn't even have to do this given that we are forced to agree to pay for carpet cleaning. I've heard that other people have also experienced this, and also that other companies have been doing this as well.
I would like to try to call to abolish the carpet cleaning fee or for better measures to ensure that they are actually cleaning the carpet if they choose to charge it. But... I don't know how much power we actually have to prevent the leasing companies from getting away with this.
2 free iClicker 2s, campus pickup
Both are CLAIMED! (That was fast)
I'm a staff member and am around campus every weekday. My neighbors down the street were moving out and left them on the curb, so I'm hoping to save 2 students some money. I've been holding onto them all summer!
Pickup on the Quad outside of the Union, we can arrange pickup over DMs. Will edit the post once both have been successfully claimed. Pickup times that work for me are any time Monday-Friday between 10:30 am-5:30 pm.
Edit: I also have a bunch (10+) of free orgo lab notebooks, some barely used and some brand new.
Green street realty when I get you.
Picked up my packet earlier this week and they gave me 6 keys and none of them are for my apartment unit, bedroom door, or mail box. One of them is from Uhaul. no one is answering me

How easy is it to switch from engineering to Gies Business School after a semester or two if interest changes?
I'm coming in for Engineering but a little unsure on whether I will truly love it and want to pursue it. How easy is it to change to a Business major after a semester or two if you are an engineering student?
Want to get better at public speaking?

Rajasi, a UIUC-area student and non-native English speaker, joined McKinley Toastmasters and found a supportive place to practice, get feedback, and build confidence.
If public speaking, presentations, or networking aren't your strong suit, this might be worth checking out.
How’s it being 17 when it comes to partying and social events
I’m 17 and will be at UIUC, and I’m wondering what the social scene is like for people who aren’t 18 yet.
Is it difficult to make friends or get involved in social circles because you can’t go to bars/most 18+ or 21+ events? Are there still plenty of ways to meet people, party, and have a normal social life at that age?
Would also appreciate hearing from anyone who was under 18 when they started at UIUC and what their experience was like
Hey guys what's cheaper than an uber
I need to get from Palos hills to campus but is there a cheaper method
Yearly PSA: high petty crime
Every August, campus turns into a free-for-all for porch pirates and bike thieves. If you'd prefer not to subsidize someone's fent hobby with your property, here's what you can do today:
Bikes and bike parts are being stolen for scrap. Lock up your bike securely (example) with a steel U-lock. All other types of locks are easily cut. If you have a quick-release seat, take it home or replace it with a non-quick-release seat and LocTite it
Handle packages like they’re fresh meat. Ship them to a secure location, such as the front desk, Amazon locker, or a reliable friend. If that’s not an option, pick them up as soon as you get a delivery notification. Don’t assume they will be mercifully not stolen
Do not prop up security doors or let strangers tailgate you into buildings.
If you are in the mood to help panhandlers, offer food in place of money. Cash fuels the cycle of addiction.
Do not leave valuable items unattended in public areas or in plain view in a vehicle.
Stay alert and trust your gut.
Exit Closed
Hey y'all,
For those of you coming from the North, just wanted to give you a heads up.
If you are coming down on I-57 South and are following the map the school gave you, exit 235A is closed. Literally gives no heads up until it's too late.
235B is open though if you're able to navigate that way.
Otherwise if you miss that, there's an exit 2 miles away that you can turn around on. That was our fun lesson to learn today!
Baking bread using my bread maker every week until I finish my PhD - Week 1

Advice on 1005 S First St…
So as the title suggests I desperately need housing advice Rn. I used to live at tower at third but due to an unfortunate situation with my roommates decided to go at it alone and get a studio. I went with 1005 S First St with green street realty.
I’m wondering has anyone else lived here or do you know anyone else that has lived here and what they thought about it?
I’ve already had to kill like 6 spiders and I even think I saw a roach!! I just moved in today and I regrettably couldn’t find any reviews talking about this building. Please let me know any advice or knowledge you have on the matter!
Thank you in advance!
Edit: It turns out what I saw was not a roach but in fact a crickets, it was extremely dark so I only saw somewhat the body shape and I’ve never seen a roach in person before. Sorry for any confusion! In other words the bug issue still persists I sprayed under the radiator where it seemed they came from and a bunch sprung out like 7 and since I have a severe phobia of bugs I had to leave.
My apartment won’t give me my access code
I’m so fed up with Smile apartments. Move in day was okay, they had all of the doors propped open with a shoe. I’m on day 2 here now, and I have yet to receive any code on how to actually enter my building when the doors aren’t propped open. I have called them 10 times and texted them but they stopped messaging me back for some reason. I can’t leave my apartment otherwise I’ll be locked out, so idk what to do.
Am I just unlucky and they forgot to send me the butterflymx info? Or are these people just incompetent and don’t think about why I would need the login.
What’s the best way to learn the buses?
I’m an engineering student living at PAR, so I’m gonna need to learn the buses. What’s the best way to do so? Also is there like a best app for them???
Too old for LAS Liftoff?
I’m 23 and a recent Psych transfer. Would I likely be “too old” to attend LAS Liftoff? I know there is no age limit but I am curious if I will feel as out of place as I am thinking I would.
On this note, any tips for “older” transfer students looking for that “college experience” would be greatly appreciated!
(I have already asked my advisor btw /s)
