Firstly going to say I'm a huge fan of original mexican Modelo. Been drinking it for years both on holiday and at home and have loads of memories associated with it.
This new UK version though...............
Tried it out of curiosity. Pour seemed pretty decent and the initial smell was promising , being very close to original.
But the taste. There really wasn't much flavour there in my opinion.
Probably won't go out of my way to try again.
Shame really.
The Walnut Tree in Leytonstone. £1.49 with a camra voucher
Nothing spectacular here.
I really enjoy a decent stout. But this wasn't one of them.
Probably just me but I thought the flavour was a little metallic 🙄
Whatever's left will get polished off over the bank holiday.
Just saw these in Morrisons. It’s funny how the big folk at Damm Brewery loved to call out madri for being "UK-brewed fake Spanish beer."
Meanwhile their own subsidiary Font Salem, is the one pumping out Birra Corelli. It’s got the same fake Mediterranean marketing tropes as madri but I guess it’s only wrong when other breweries do it
Filled up a crate for a little holiday in Snowdonia:
Tegernsee and Kloster Andechs are probably my favourites. The Spezials might be the best lagers I've tasted. Slightly prefer them to the Edelstoff.
Schlenkerla I'd not tried before, and I found the smokiness a bit weird, unlikely to pick it up again.
Porthleven is fucking delicious on draught. Love it in a can still, and it's great value.
Putty I didn't get round to trying. Lightbulb is great but I'm increasingly sick of Verdant as a business these days.
Not feeling the Goldbräu so much any more. I wish Stiegl Hell was available at Sainsbury's still, I think that's a really fantastic beer. Like a super Spaten.
Flötzinger is top tier.
Ayinger, Chiemseer, Paulaner, Budvar, Hacker Pschorr Gold: all good beers but kind of middle shelf compared to the best ones here.
It's hard to beat a bottle of Franziskaner in my opinion though!
I find myself preferring beers with a super crisp and dry taste, like Asahi, Staropramen, Pilsner Urquell, and Heverlee. I find it pretty offputting when a beer has a lot of sweet, fruity notes, syrupy mouthfeel, or that sulfury taste most UK brewed beer has.
I'm mostly looking for full strength beer, but I wouldn't mind some alcohol free recommendations either. The only alcohol free beer I can tolerate is Corona Cero, and it's not great either.
Ideally something I can find in the supermarket regularly
