Trying to get into business school but not looking good... need advice

(From son): I got 3.4 gpa first semester (had to re-take econ 201 over winter break because I procrastinated too much and got a D. Received a B at CCBC). Spring semester I decided to pledge a fraternity so I could make friends, but my grades suffered badly. Ending the semester with 2 Cs (econ 200 and bstat) and 2 Ds (comm 107 and music205).

Need advice. I know I need to retake comm 107 (taking it this summer), but should I just accept the D in music and retake either Bstat or econ 201 to get a higher grade, or is it better to retake music? I know that these are easy A classes and I just screwed up.

Does it even matter? Am I totally screwed for getting into the business school if I apply at the end of my sophomore year?

Is commencement worth it

I read that last year it took until 10 ish. I have to ask, is it worth it to go to commencement tomorrow and sit in the rain for 3+ hours while elitists give speeches to us?

Incoming Transfer want to know my chances at Smith

Title, I am an incoming transfer I got accepted for economics and I’m coming from UMBC.

At UMBC I am was doing the double degree track for Financial Economics and Information Systems. I have 84 credits at UMBC, 79 at UMD once I send my final transcript. I currently have a 3.55 GPA but it’s definitely going down no lower than a 3.40.

I really had no clue Smith was an LEP, it’s entirely my fault for not originally applying with it. But I need to be a business major I love taking those classes. I don’t mind being in Accounting, Finance, general Business, or Information Systems.

I had a horrible semester because I had recurring GI issues all sem that made school so much harder and my grades mildly slipped (and I think I failed my micro analysis class). I have the doctors notes I can give the school if they need proof.

Some of my grades stats for the LEP stuff:
Accounting I/II: B + B
Calculus I: A
Microeconomics: B
Macroeconomics: A

Currently have a stats class that won’t carry over (STAT351) idk what my grade is to be honest, I can update when I get it.

I have B’s in the 2 management classes I took at UMBC, IS300 and IS210. I ended with an A in IS310 and IS369. (I don’t know how much these matter).

I know every one is different and I will be speaking to an advisor. I just really need to be a business major and I wondered if I was truly cooked. I love economics but I also do need that second degree, and if not business I don’t know what else I can do.

Math 120 Summer

I’m taking Math 120 in the summer and need some advice on where to get help and how to learn everything. I haven’t taken any math classes since I came to UMD, so I’m not sure what my options are or what resources I have.

Prince George’s sheriff’s office spokesperson suspended following audit of her nonprofit

The sheriff’s move came on the heels of a Banner report on the audit’s findings.

Prince George’s County Sheriff John Carr said he had suspended his public information officer after learning of an audit into her nonprofit that revealed how it had spent tens of thousands of dollars in county grants.

In February, the County Council’s Office of Audits and Investigations audited The Better Family Inc., a children’s nonprofit run by Romaine Taylor Thomas McNair, a former radio host who goes by Taylor Thomas and also serves as the sheriff’s spokesperson. The audit found that Thomas deposited grant funds into her personal bank account, spent some of the money on her private wedding business, and didn’t report potential conflicts of interest to a state ethics board, among other findings.

The sheriff’s office said on Wednesday that it didn’t learn of the audit until May 18, the day The Banner reported its findings.

“Based on the information my office has been provided and our preliminary internal review, our agency has initiated an internal affairs investigation,” Carr said in a statement.

The sheriff’s office said Thomas would be suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

Tracy Brown, Carr’s chief of staff, told The Banner that the sheriff was not made aware of the repeated requests for comment sent to the public information office’s email address, which was handled by Thomas. The Banner also attempted to reach Thomas on her cellphone.

In his statement, Carr said he was “concerned by the allegations” in the audit.

Over two years, County Council members sent about $68,500 to Thomas’ nonprofit, $56,000 of which came when she was working as a county employee, according to the audit. The audit found that grant funding made up about half of The Better Family’s budget.

Thomas used different portions of her name across grant applications and claimed her nonprofit had a board of directors consisting of four members when she was, in fact, the sole member, according to the audit.

Delayed Graduation

Hey. So I am a transfer student coming from out of state for chemical engineering. I found out that for Chemical engineering there is an introductory course called introduction for chemical and biomolecular engineering for freshman which I didn’t take. I am also coming as a Letters and sciences major in the fall and I was wondering if my graduation might be impacted. Thanks.

Undergrad research at UMD

Hey guys,

I’m going into my last semester at UMD this fall (graduating Fall 2026) and I’ve been realizing I probably haven’t taken advantage of UMD resources as much as I should have. I’m a CS major and I’ll be interning this summer, but when I come back in the fall I’d really like to get involved in undergrad research, especially anything involving tech + healthcare/medicine.

I’m interested in things like data analysis, AI/ML, digital health, medical technology, or anything along those lines. I’m mainly wondering if it’s too late to get involved as a senior with only one semester left.

If anyone has advice on:

  • finding professors/labs
  • whether labs take seniors for one semester
  • good programs/resources at UMD
  • or just how to get started

I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

Looks like it will be a beautiful day to graduate!

So who are the meteorologists who told campus to hold commencement tomorrow instead and what did we ever do to them?

Can someone hold this against me legally? Seeking advice.

Someone can blackmail me as an admitted student to the school ?

So I was an argument with someone because of something they did when we were drunk (typical HS BS), I’m an admitted student could they send videos of me intoxicated to UMD?

Thanks if someone has advice I would appreciate it

Are there Tickets for individual Graduations

My daughter is set to graduate on Friday and isn’t attending the main ceremony tomorrow. She applied and was approved for graduation a while ago. We got her cap and gown already. Where are the tickets? Were there extra steps?

I'm a senior who plans on graduating next fall or spring to finish up my last remaining credits and boost my GPA.

Although I managed to make some friends, I'm still slowly trying to make myself more sociable (a personal issue that I am trying to work on). Any recs of orgs or groups on campus?

Is it normal to require advance notice to take a gap semester?

Hey everyone just a quick question

My educational future is in dire straits atm. So I had a tremendously rough winter semester. I was damn near suicidal and I did absolutely shit in my classes.

I decided it might be best for me to take the spring (this past semester) off just to get my mental health in order. Then right in the middle of the semester my father got extremely ill and died. So it got even worse.

I then get a phone call from the financial office saying I owe 5000 dollars because I skipped the semester and they instead of giving me an education grant left me with a debt to the university.

I’m not sure what to do. I’m having the worst year ever and now I might not even graduate. Any advice would be great

Final GPA and grades??

Maybe this gets asked a lot and this is my first spring semester here. But I’m currently on academic probation and while things are looking better now (No Ds, passed orgo 1!), I am still waiting on my English final essay to be graded and I took it on Friday. I guess I was expecting it to be graded by Monday (yesterday) but when I looked it up it said some final grades will be out by May 20-27th. Just annoying since I’m dying to know my final GPA to know if I’m off probation or not. I know it varies by school but does anyone remember the average day they are done finalizing grades and gpas? I remember for winter break I knew before I even got home

Incoming Junior Transfer (InfoSci) ➔ Information Systems. Feasible, or am I cooked? 💀

Hey y'all! Just got accepted as an international junior transfer for Information Science (InfoSci). Super hyped!

However, after looking into it, Information Systems (IS), which is under the Business School here, fits my career goals much better. Since I’m already entering as a junior, time is ticking.

Need some brutal honesty on a few things:

  1. Switching vs. Double Major: How hard is it to internally transfer into the Business School as a junior? If I double major (InfoSci + IS), is there good course overlap, or will it delay my graduation?

  2. The Workload: How heavy is the academic pressure in Information Systems? Will I still have a life and time for internship hunting?

Any insights from current students or transfers would literally save my life. Thanks! 🙏

TL;DR: Admitted as a junior for InfoSci. Want to switch to or double major in Information Systems (Business). Is it doable or a GPA suicide mission?

Rant about Commencement

I do not understand why commencement has to be mid week on a Wednesday. It is so incredibly inconvenient. My family has to travel across the country to be in attendance. Both my parents work full time. The fact that it had to be rescheduled means they can no longer attend, as they can’t afford to take time off work. If it had been scheduled for a Friday with the contingency being Saturday, they could have made it. Such ridiculous scheduling.
