Joan really made Maya & Darnell’s wedding about herself 😭

Rewatching Girlfriends on Dabl and babyyy… Season 1, Episode 10 (“Never a Bridesmaid”) still blows me every time. Joan really took Maya and Darnell’s wedding and slowly turned it into her little passion project.

At first it’s giving “helpful friend,” but the more she inserts herself, the more everything starts looking like Joan Clayton’s dream wedding instead of Maya’s. Every choice Maya makes gets questioned, “tweaked,” or straight‑up overridden. And it’s not loud or messy — it’s that quiet, constant correcting that wears you down.

By the time Maya finally checks her, you can tell she’s been feeling unheard the whole time. And honestly? She wasn’t wrong. Joan wasn’t trying to sabotage anything, but she definitely wasn’t listening either.

That episode is such a reminder that even well‑intentioned help can turn into control when you stop letting somebody’s moment actually belong to them.

And she did the same crap to Toni.

One on One Sitcom Cancelled ❌ — May 15, 2006

20 years ago today, the UPN sitcom One on One was cancelled after five seasons during the UPN and WB merger that created The CW.

Starring Flex Alexander and Kyla Pratt, the series struggled in its final season after a major format change. Season 5 acted as a “soft reboot,” moving the show from Baltimore to Los Angeles, reducing Flex’s role, and shifting the focus more toward Breanna.

Although the sitcom remained popular with fans, it ultimately did not make the transition to The CW lineup following the 2006 network merger.

MOESHA Cancelled 25 years ago 📺❌ (Miles Kidnapping)

❌ Moesha was canceled 25 years ago yesterday on May 14, 2001 — leaving fans with the shocking kidnapping of Myles Mitchell unresolved.

Some fans say Myles was found because Marcus T. Paulk appeared on The Parkers. But his crossover episode aired in 1999, two years before the Moesha finale kidnapping storyline in 2001.

After Moesha was canceled, the storyline was never officially resolved.

Half & Half Sitcom Cancelled ❌May 15, 2006 📺

20 years ago today, the UPN sitcom Half & Half was cancelled after four seasons and 91 episodes. The series finale aired on May 15, 2006.

Despite being a strong performer for UPN, the show was left off The CW’s Fall 2006 lineup after the merger between UPN and The WB, which caused a major schedule overhaul.

Fans still remember the frustrating cliffhanger ending, where the main character chose a romantic partner over the phone — but viewers never found out who was on the other end because the series was abruptly cancelled.

Varetta Childs is in town for Mother’s Day 💐🔊

Season 2, Episode 20 (May 6, 2002) — “My Mother, Myself” 💐💌💝

This marks Jenifer Lewis’s first appearance as Varetta Childs, Toni’s mother, on Girlfriends.

Toni’s outspoken loudmouth mother, Varetta (Jenifer Lewis), surprises her with a visit for Joan’s Mother’s Day brunch—much to Toni’s dismay.

The WB Network Sign-Off 🐸📺

Here’s a small clip of The WB Network signing off in September 2006. I don’t think I had ever seen this before, but watching it now feels incredibly bittersweet. I was 14 years old when both the WB and UPN networks came to an end. An unforgettable era of television. 💔

I feel bad for Brittany

Watching Kelly and Jason tell Brittany they were getting a divorce was honestly sad. You could tell she didn’t really understand what was happening at first.

And before that, I liked when Kelly’s dad finally got Jason together and made him realize Kelly was done with him. Jason really thought Kelly was gonna keep putting up with anything. The way he treated her during that whole storyline used to make me mad sometimes.

Still my favorite storyline from season 3 though.

I hated that episode when that man Mona dated told her she wasn’t Black enough

That episode of Half & Half always makes me mad. Dude really stopped talking to Mona because he said she wasn’t “Black enough” for him. Like what does that even mean? Everybody don’t act the same. I hated how she started questioning herself and trying to change over a man’s opinion. I’m glad she eventually realized she didn’t need to prove herself to anybody because that whole situation was ridiculous.

One thing about Toni, she was gonna tell the truth 😭

Rewatching the episode where Maya was dating that athlete Alex and Toni saw right through him immediately.

That rooftop scene made me so mad because why did he have Maya standing outside looking crazy while all those other women were getting in? You could tell Maya really liked that man too.

But Toni wasn’t sugarcoating anything. When she basically told Maya that he was treating her like she was just another girl instead of his actual girlfriend, she was absolutely right. Alex embarrassed her the entire episode.

And honestly, this was one of the times Toni actually looked out for Maya instead of being selfish.
