Please Don’t Hit Dogs

I just watched this happen and felt bad for everyone involved. Guy was throwing his ball to his dog on the beach. Doggie was very sweet and came up to me a few times to give it a toss. Anyway, doggie goes up to two ladies sitting on the beach and tries to get them to throw it and one of the ladies slapped the dog in the face. Obviously the owner was upset(dog seemed fine) and yelled at the two ladies for overcorrecting. I felt bad because I have a dog too. He’s run up on people before and I’ve had to discipline him before but this dog was very kind and didn’t deserve a hit. I get people have their own trauma and preferences but please don’t hit a dog the same way you wouldn’t strike a child when they’re playing. Some animals are dangerous but this one clearly wasn’t.

To save the debate, I’m aware of the leash laws and I ignore them like the other owners do on the beach. They should enforce them for everyone if they want them to be followed. I think people should responsibly control their animals but don’t please don’t hit dogs.

EDIT: Having sat with this for a minute and hearing peoples’ responses I’m changing my stance a bit on the leashing the dog at the beach and the consequences of an off leash dog. I still don’t think anyone should hit a dog the same as they wouldn’t hit a child but I’m seeing it more from the POV of those ladies. Overreaction sucks but it’s always rooted in something. I’ve never had any trauma related to a dog other than witnessing animal abuse as a kid and I’m letting my feelings get in the way here probably the same way she did. Owner shoulda had better control of the dog at minimum and leashed up even if she was friendly.

Can’t miss events this week?

My friends and I are here for a bit, into all genres but we’d love to see some house/techno/dnb/riddim while we’re here, anything going on this week that’s can’t miss? We also have some flow artists in the group that would love to connect with others if there’s anything like that that goes on around here too!

Anyone run the Venice Beach Half Marathon??? Or go watch???

I know the roads were closed and that sucks, but it’s fun. Big party at the end. There was a The Doors cover band. Food trucks, etc. Pretty crowded and most in good spirits. Not too shabby for a few hours on a lazy Sunday morning.

'Street Smart' posters!!!!!!!

Bentonville Film Festival will screen the world Premiere of “Street Smart” on June 18. There will be a Q&A with director Catherine Hardwicke.

The film “follows a lively group of street kids in Venice Beach help each other chase their dreams — with humor, street-smarts, and Robin Hood larceny.”

The Venice Beach Half Marathon involves widespread road closures, particularly in the Westside areas of Venice and Santa Monica.

Multiple streets have street signs posted that declare that May 17th, 12:01 am Sunday, midnight, they start towing cars parked at the curb where the signs are posted.

Major Street Closures and Timings

  • Venice Boulevard: Closed from Ocean Front Walk to Sepulveda Boulevard. Traffic is barred from crossing Venice Blvd while the event is active.
  • Barnard Way & Neilson Way (Santa Monica): Closed from Ocean Park Boulevard south to the LA City line.
  • Abbot Kinney Boulevard: Closed between Venice Boulevard and Main Street/Garfield Avenue.
  • Main Street: Closed between Windward Avenue and Rose Avenue.
  • Windward Circle: Closed to vehicular traffic. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Key Times & Detours

  • Closure Windows: Rolling closures begin as early as 4:00 AM and most major streets reopen by 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Some Santa Monica areas may clear as early as 10:00 AM.
  • Crossing Venice Boulevard: Vehicles cannot cross Venice Blvd during the event. To travel north or south, use Rose Avenue, Washington Boulevard, or Ocean Park Boulevard to take the EAST route to Sepulveda Boulevard.
  • Public Transit: Expect extensive detours for Los Angeles Metro and Big Blue Bus routes in the area, specifically Lines 1, 3, 14, and 18. [, 2, 3]

Looking for a REAL scissor-cut artist for men’s longer/wavy hair

Any recommendations for a great men’s haircut spot in the WeHo / BH / SaMo / Venice / Marina / Brentwood area for mid-to-long hairstyles? (think Michael Douglas, Brad Pitt, Christian Bale type lengths/styles — not fades or super short cuts).

Looking for someone who’s a true artist with scissors — not a rushed fade shop. Prefer someone who mainly uses scissor techniques (ideally no buzzers/clippers), pays attention to detail, and really understands shape, flow, texture, and longer men’s hair.

Specifically hoping to find someone who works well with wavy hair, values maintaining fullness, and avoids over-texturizing or thinning. Extra points if they’re great with soft, natural layered longer styles.

Thank you!!!

Venice Beach Half Marathon May 17, 2026

  • Great, roads closed.
  • Last race, I was at Cow's End and wanted to get to Westminster dog park. Pacific Ave to get to Westminster was closed and the only way to get there was to go down Washington Blvd to Sepulveda, get on Santa Monica Blvd and head back only to find that road closures at Rose Ave and Pacific prevented the same access.
  • This can't be good for businesses. There's a huge walkway called the boardwalk aka Ocean Front Walk that would require no closures, be perfect for spectators and great for businsesses.
  • Why not have these races on the boardwalk?

Why don't redditors read the comments before posting? There are only a few comments and half of them say exactly the same thing. Why don't people just upvote the comment they were going to make instead of making the same comment?

  • This is from the post where I made the mistake of saying Lincoln and Rose instead of Lincoln and Venice Blvd.
  • I have already deleted a few duplicate comments.
  • I feel like I'm missing something. I can understand commenting on a post title that links to an article that the redditor didn't read. Not that I'm saying it's good that a redditor does that, but I can see how the redditor thinks they know what the article is about based on the title and want to vent about it.
  • But taking the effort to post a comment without bothering to see if the comment has already been made when there are only a few comments, seems so odd I feel like I'm not understanding something about human nature.
  • It's like reading a review of a product on Amazon.com and the review is "I just received the package in the mail and haven't opened it yet." Why would someone bother posting that? They add nothing to the conversation.
  • What is going on for people that post the comment that's already been made?

Abbot Kinney update

  • Chamberlain Coffee has opened. The owner is a 24 year old influencer. Geez!
  • Went in to Abbot's Pizza Factory. Menu has no pricing. The reasons why it would have no pricing do not bode well for the biz. I give the place a year before it closes.
  • New shop, Lil Sweet Treat. Bins full of candy you scoop into a bag and pay by weight.
  • A lot of entrepreneurs have their tables/vans full of goods at the curb. I was always pleased to see them until a shop owner told me they take up parking spaces that would go to a customer. It looks like Birkenstock is fighting fire with fire, getting their own customized van to park in front of their store.
  • Pleased to see the tuxedo rabbits mural is still intact throughout the many changes of the store it is in front of.
  • Wasn't there a plaque on top of the stands at the rainbow crosswalk? Wonder what happened to them.
  • I don't understand the business model of food trucks. It seems like the food should cost less as they don't have the overhead that a brick and mortar restaurant has. Low cost comfort food I thought would be their selling point. But they charge the same, if not more. GamGam burger, for example. $11 for a burger, $7 for fries and $3 for a drink. I guess it's for tourists with disposable income that happen to walk by and have no idea or care about the price. But every food truck every where has crazy pricing.

Feel free to post your own update about different aspects or area of Venice.

I worked a gig at The Lighthouse Studios, which used to be the post office at Venice Circle. In my opinion, nothing typifies the gentrification of Venice more than this. Taking what was once a beloved historical public space, and transforming it into a bougie members-only wannabe WeWork for content creators that costs almost $6000 a year to join (not including hourly rates to actually rent certain facilities) is fucking gross.

Don’t get me wrong - it’s a cool space, but as a native Westsider who has seen said Westside split into the haves who claim to be jUsT LiKe yOuGuYzZ, and people struggling to cling to what their rent controlled apartments and homeless have-nots, this “creative space” typifies the chasm that has grown here over the last few decades.

What’s next? Charging admission to walk the Venice pier?

Your voice matters - help protect aging services in our coastal communities

Older adults across Los Angeles County could lose critical services that support their health, independence, and dignity.

The California Department of Aging is proposing changes to the distribution of Older Americans Act funding across the state, including a 17% budget reduction for Los Angeles County. This could reduce essential services for older adults such as home-delivered meals, congregate dining, senior centers, case management, transportation, and caregiver support.

State leaders can still revise the funding formula before it is finalized. Your voice can help protect services, ensure funding reflects Los Angeles County’s needs, and prevent harmful cuts.

Simply submit a public comment to the Department of Aging by 5:00 p.m. on May 12, 2026, via email at: CA2030@aging.ca.gov. You can access a template letter here.

Read our op-ed on this topic in today’s Santa Monica Daily Press here.
