Incredibly noisy crowd

My first post here. It's good to be part of the community on Reddit!

I live over by Thornton and Speedway. Last night, Friday, August 14th, from about 9 to 10pm I heard a lot of noise from what sounded like a huge crowd. A few emergency vehicles passed and there was the obligatory 'copter as well. There were people walking up and down Speedway, as well.

The noised eased up pretty quickly. Only lasted about an hour.

Anybody know what was going on? I thought it might be a massive party on the Boardwalk but there was no music. Just a throng of voices from the crowd.

Blue Giant

Hello all. I recently joined this sub. Hiromi is a top favorite of mine for so many reasons. Anyway, I don't know if this has been posted yet, (and pardon me if it has been), but if you hadn't known about it, it may be a treat. I'm watching right now as I post this.

Reading her Wikipedia page, I discovered that she composed the music for the Anime movie, Blue Giant. It can be found on Amazon and Netflix currently.

Enjoy!

Happy behind my own back

Some years ago (I'm old now), I was living under horrid conditions in L.A. Even though the space was located in the posh Pacific Palisades, I was living in a terrible adjunct behind a garage. The landlord appropriately named it 'the chicken shack.'

Everything at the time was going wrong to the nth degree. You name it, whatever the area, I had nothing but bad luck. Penniless, lost my job, had no real friends, no love.

Something broke the camel's back. One day, bad news came my way, and I got to the point where I was so stunned by it all, I went catatonic, overwhelmed by the endless bad luck.

I sat outside in a beach chair for a good ten minutes seeing nothing but a bright, harsh white light in front of me. That was all I could see.

Then, a tiny voice crept into my mind saying, "If you don't get up and shake yourself out of this, you're going to remain like this for the rest of your life. You'll be taken away."

I shook myself out of it. You can say that was a good thing. I think it was. But after that, my luck hadn't changed for a long, long time.

I used to write daily journals back then. I had to get rid of them because they were too depressing to read.

One day, years later, I was reflecting on that time in my life and oddly felt a twinge of nostalgia, as if those were the 'good ol' days.' I asked myself in that moment, "Could I have been happy behind my own back?"

For all of my life I've had problems with serious depression and depressive episodes and still deal with it.

However, fast forward to two nights ago. I was doing the dishes feeling pretty down, when strangely, a twinge of happiness broke through my awareness. Like it had been buried. My inner voice said to me, "You are happy even in this moment." I felt that happiness for for the briefest second and then it went away.

I can't help but feel that was my Real Self intervening on my behalf. Even though it was a nanosecond of happiness, that moment keeps coming back into my mind and I do wonder if, even now, I'm happy behind my own back.

What are your thoughts on this?

The Last Two Words

The last two words we hear in the final episode which ends the series, are "Don't Stop."

Cut to black and the show, well...it stops. Forever.

This is the genius of David Chase. Funny, because before ever watching the Sopranos, I hated, I mean, hated 'Don't Stop Believing.' Now, whenever I hear the song, I give it an honest listen.

People have asked him about this song choice, and David said something about the lyrics that went, "Oh, the movie never ends, it goes on and on and on."

And that was his message, life goes on, (to quote George Harrison, "within you and without you.")

I'm willing to bet that when he considered at what point to end the song, it was a conscious choice to end on the words, "Don't stop." The paradox. It stops precisely where we want it to keep going.

I don't think that a pat ending--like Tony getting shot as we witness it--would've done justice to the show. To my mind, it's sheer brilliance. And that infamous cut to black may contribute to why people are still talking about the show online.

Can you blame her?

Dr. Melfi gets dissed for her lack of ethics because she won't put an end to Tony's therapy. But really, as a trained psychotherapist, who wouldn't be fascinated by the prospect of trying to disentangle the mind of a criminal sociopath?

She was fascinated by the man and how his spurious reasoning led him to become who he was. If I was a psychotherapist, I would've been fascinated by him as well.

Sopranos Reunion Interview

It's likely you saw this but if you didn't, it's a treat.

It's so cool to see the cast being who they are, irl, and being all together. They clearly felt the sadness of Gandolfini not being there. Some of them aged really well, some didn't.

Poor Tony Sirico (Paulie), seemed a bit doddering. He was pretty old by then. That was sad. Dominic Chianese (Junior) was a class act. John Ventimiglia (Artie), was strangely detached from it. He seemed unhappy or bored. It only went on for an hour but I could've watched it for days.

A down side of the show is that the interviewer could've asked more compelling questions, like asking Lorraine Bracco how difficult it likely was for her to do the rape scene. Some moments like that are emotionally draining for actors.

One thing that I wondered about is why so many other cast members didn't show up for this.

I did watch the podcast, Talking Sopranos, which was great in its own right.

Is Silvio on the wagon?

I'm just now re-watching the Pie-O-My episode.

In the first scene, Tone and Sil walk into the Crazy Horse for the first time.

Ade immediately pours a Glenlivet for Tone. She asks Sil what he wants. "Uh, just seltzer, dear," he says.

I thought that was an interesting moment, for whateva reason. But does Sil ever drink alcohol on the show?

Anyway, I'm not gonna mention the cost of fish per pound.

Remember When Is The Lowest Form Of Conversation...

...but hell, sometimes ya just gotta.

The HBO YouTube channel was kind enough to present 'The Sopranos Dictionary' for your perusal. All this for a slice of gabagool? Oh!

Con Te Partirò

I grew up in a NY Italian family. Every Christmas, my uncle and grandpa sang songs from the opera with heartfelt sincerity,--like the way Uncle Jun does in the Army Of One episode.

God knows, they tried to get me into it but as a kid, I was growing up with rock & roll. Opera, to me and my cousins, was so not cool. I absolutely abhorred the melodramatic style of Opera.

But now, I have to say that I find this song that plays through a few different episodes, Con Te Partirò, to be truly haunting and beautiful. Granted, it isn't technically Opera but it's still in that style.

Chase knows how to pick his tunes. Gotta say.

If you're not in a Sopranos mood right now, this will get you into it.

Quotable Sopranos

Yeah, so since I joined this Subreddit, and having watched the show since its inception, over and over, I've come to the conclusion that the Sopranos is the most quotable show that ever was.

I'm re-watching it yet one more time. I have a crap memory so now I'm even thinking I should take notes of all the great one liners that go by.

With that said, there are lots of all-too-common ones that people use here, like, "anyway $4.00 a pound."

But...what are the quotes you don't see often that are just as good if not better?

Do you ever wish that Tony had personally whacked someone rather than someone else doing it?

Richie Aprile was so detestable I always wished that Tony whacked him personally face to face. I did get some satisfaction over Janice doing it but I still wish Tony took care of it.

Wilson Pickett

This, I think, is in the Mr. Ruggerio's Neighborhood episode. In that infamous episode, the FBI was attempting to plant a mic in the lamp basement. It's the episode with the mashup of Peter Gunn and Every Breath You Take.

I noticed something that totally sounded like a pun. A couple of agents were at the front door of the Sopranos home, picking the lock on the front door. Agent Harris says to the guy who's working on the lock, "Pick it, Wilson." It had to be a take on Wilson Pickett. I wouldn't put that past Chase since he's clearly a big music lover.
