PayPal Made Me Lose My Job

I never thought a payment platform could eventually cost me my job.

I worked as a Virtual Assistant for an insurance billing company based in Los Angeles, California, with a team here in the Philippines led by a Filipino Team Leader. I was part of the Accounts Receivable (AR) Team, where our responsibility was to call insurance companies and follow up on claims filed for the healthcare facilities we handled. Most of the claims involved behavioral health and substance abuse services.

At first, I genuinely enjoyed working with the team. I was learning a lot, improving my skills, and becoming more confident in handling difficult claims. One particular claim was especially challenging, but I managed to work through it until it was eventually paid. The accomplishment was significant enough that I received a commendation from the main team onshore for successfully handling the claim.

Unfortunately, I also started to feel a change in the way I was being treated afterward. I felt that my success may have caused some resentment, particularly from my trainer, who was also the Team Leader's best friend. I cannot say for certain what their intentions were, but I couldn't help but feel that the recognition I received affected the way I was treated afterward.

Then came the issue that ultimately ended my employment.

The company used PayPal exclusively to pay its employees and contractors. Shortly after receiving my first paycheck, PayPal restricted my account. I spent hours communicating with PayPal, trying to understand what happened and how I could regain access to my account.

I followed their instructions and was eventually told to create new PayPal accounts. I did exactly that. Unfortunately, those accounts were also restricted. After going through the process repeatedly, I ended up with four PayPal accounts that were banned or restricted.

I tried everything I could. I followed PayPal's instructions, contacted their support multiple times, and even tried solutions that had worked for some of my coworkers. Despite all my efforts, I kept getting the same result.

Eventually, I approached my Team Leader for help.

What I expected was understanding and perhaps assistance in finding an alternative solution. Instead, I was told that she had no choice but to let me go if I could not fix the PayPal problem myself because the company would have no means of paying me.

That was the moment I realized I was on my own.

I wasn't leaving because I couldn't perform my job. I wasn't leaving because I had failed to meet expectations. In fact, I had already received recognition from the company's onshore team for successfully handling a difficult claim.

I ultimately chose to leave the company because I felt that my Team Leader had no intention of helping me resolve the problem. After exhausting every option available to me, I couldn't continue working under the threat of losing my job over an issue I had repeatedly tried to fix.

I understand that the company needed a reliable way to pay me. But I also believe that employees deserve support when circumstances beyond their control affect their ability to receive their salary.

This experience taught me a difficult lesson about remote work: sometimes, you can do your job well, receive recognition for your performance, and still lose your livelihood because of a problem completely outside your control.

For me, this wasn't simply a PayPal restriction.

It was my paycheck, my job, and ultimately, my livelihood.

6 months into remote work hunting. ~100 applications, 8 interviews, 0 offers. Baka may mali lang talaga akong ginagawa?

Hi everyone. Medyo mahaba ito, pero I genuinely want to hear from people who have been through something similar.

29M from Baguio. Since February, I've been seriously trying to figure out how to get back into remote work. Around 100 applications later, roughly 8 interviews, and still no offer that actually pushed through.

Hindi ako fresh grad na naghahanap ng first experience. I currently have two existing roles. I'm a Non Executive Director and Marketing Committee Chairman at a rural bank, and I also handle operations for our property businesses. Since family businesses ito, I'm still involved, but most of my role now is more on leadership, delegation, coordination, and oversight rather than doing everything myself.

Before that, I've done a pretty wide range of hands on work: marketing campaigns, social media, content creation, graphic design, video editing, lead generation, CRM management, events, and general operations. I've worked with HubSpot, built marketing tracking systems, managed Facebook Live seminars with around 100 to 150 live attendees, and handled multiple projects at the same time.

I actually got into remote work before. Around 2020, I landed a Content Coordinator role through OnlineJobs.ph for a US company called Ignite Brands. It was a genuinely good experience, so when I decided to seriously pursue remote work again this year, OnlineJobs.ph was naturally one of the first places I went back to.

But honestly, the market feels VERY different now.

I've sent around 100 applications, mostly through OnlineJobs.ph. Around 8 turned into interviews. Some actually went pretty far.

One employer told me I was their second choice. Another gave me a trial task and then basically disappeared for months. A few interviews felt like there was a really good connection, only for the rejection email to eventually come.

Still zero offers that actually stuck.

And somewhere in the middle of all this, I had probably my worst experience with a remote employer.

UAE based, everything looked legitimate, I did my checks, completed the work, and then the employer stopped responding when I raised concerns about the contract and payment. I ended up filing a formal dispute through OnlineJobs.ph and the relevant free zone authority.

Never recovered the money.

Honestly, that one affected me more than I expected. Hindi lang dahil sa pera. It's the feeling na nagtiwala ka, did everything properly, and still got burned.

For a while, I started questioning whether I was wasting my time trying to get back into this space.

But I'm still applying.

And I think that's why I'm posting this instead of just giving up.

I still genuinely believe I can build something better for myself through remote work. I want the financial growth, obviously, but I also want to build a career around the things I'm actually good at and interested in: marketing, operations, CRM, systems, and eventually AI and automation.

The problem is I'm starting to wonder if my current approach is wrong.

Maybe I'm too broad.

Maybe having experience in marketing + operations + CRM + content + admin makes me look like I can do everything but don't specialize in anything.

Maybe I'm applying for the wrong roles.

Maybe OnlineJobs.ph has simply become too saturated.

Or maybe this is just what the market looks like right now and I'm being impatient.

So I'm trying to step back and actually figure out what I should improve instead of blindly sending another 100 applications.

I've been considering learning something more specialized like GoHighLevel, AI automation, or paid ads. I see these skills constantly appearing in job postings.

The problem is I don't have much budget for courses, and because of my existing responsibilities, I also don't have unlimited time to spend learning.

For those who have actually gone down these paths:

What skills are genuinely worth learning for free right now?

Which platforms or resources actually helped you become employable?

And if you were in my position, would you specialize heavily in one area, or continue positioning yourself as a broader Marketing and Operations person?

I'm especially interested in hearing from Filipinos who were also trying to break into foreign remote companies. What worked for you? What completely wasted your time?

I'm not posting this because I expect someone to hand me a job. I'm genuinely trying to understand what I'm missing.

Six months is a long time to keep getting rejected, especially when you're putting real effort into every application.

Pero kahit nakakafrustrate, ayoko pa rin sumuko.

Maybe I just need to change the way I'm approaching it.

Kahit anong honest advice or experience would be appreciated. 🙏

100k Savings in just 4 months of work as a VA

Edited:

I never expected that my life would change this much in 2026. 🥺❤️

I’m now 6 months and counting as a Construction VA, working directly with a New Zealand company doing estimating and quantity takeoffs. I honestly never thought I could save ₱100K in just 4 months working from home. Before this, it took me almost a year of working on-site to save the same amount, even with my 13th-month pay. 🥺☺️

I’m sharing this not to brag, but to inspire anyone who’s still waiting for their opportunity. Nothing is impossible—sometimes, it’s just a matter of timing. Trust God’s plan. ❤️

For those asking how I started: I applied through different platforms, but I got my direct client through OnlineJobs.ph (OLJ) after the owner reached out to me.

My biggest advantage was my construction background and hands-on experience with quantity takeoffs using PlanSwift. I also have experience with estimating, reading construction plans, and using tools like Microsoft Excel and Google Drive. These skills helped me qualify for the role, although many software and admin skills can definitely be learned along the way.

A few tips before applying: Optimize your profile and portfolio first, and keep your resume short and relevant. Don’t try to put everything you've ever done—highlight the skills that match the job you're applying for.

You can also explore LinkedIn, JobStreet, Indeed, and Upwork.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned as a VA is to be observant, precise, and attentive to even the smallest details. I’m not perfect, and I’ve made mistakes along the way, but every mistake became a lesson and pushed me to improve.

If you’re still starting out, keep applying, keep learning, and don’t underestimate the skills you already have. Your experience might be exactly what someone is looking for. ❤️

Your opportunity will come at the right time.

Money dust to everyone! 🤩🫶✨

First-time freelancer/VA — need help with BIR taxes

Hi! I started working as a freelance/remote VA in February 2026, and this is my first time handling my own taxes.

I initially thought I could compute and file everything at the end of the year, but I recently learned that there are quarterly filing requirements as well. I’m trying to understand what I should do at this point and how to properly handle everything moving forward.

Quick background, my expected gross income for 2026 is below ₱500k, including an additional year-end payment equivalent to around one month of my usual pay.

A few questions:

  1. Since I started earning in February and haven’t filed yet, what should I do first?
  2. How should I handle the quarterly filings I may have missed?
  3. Are there penalties, and how are they usually calculated?
  4. What filings and deadlines should I be aware of as a freelance VA?
  5. How do I know whether the 8% option or graduated rates would apply to me?
  6. Where can I find reliable and beginner-friendly references that explain the whole BIR process for freelancers?
  7. Is this manageable to sort out myself through BIR’s online systems, or would it be better to consult an accountant for the first year?

Would really appreciate advice from PH freelancers/VAs who have gone through the process, especially those who started freelancing before fully understanding the filing requirements, as well as accountants or anyone familiar with BIR requirements for freelancers.

Thank you!
