Planning for one off builds in North wicklow?

Grew up in north Wicklow, now live out west. We need to get back east really for verious reasons centered around support structure with young family.

We could get a site from family, would be willing to do do the mobile home thing too for a bit in order to get planning.

My question is, what is the current situation regarding planning for one off houses in wicklow? We absolutely won't not be able to buy second hand and would be useing direct labour to build if we did get planning.

Would be good to hear positive stories, if there are any of people that have managed to get planning for a one off house recently. The family farm is currently leased, so I couldn't go farming it and apply for planning that way as far as I understand.

Care standards at Newcastle mental hospital

Just wondering if anyone had experience of themselves or a relative / friend being in here lately?

A few bad reviews on Google and most recent HIQA/ mental health reports saying 69% care rating.

Thought I’d ask on here for any anecdotal reports…

Wicklow for 4 days

Flying to Dublin early October through the 23rd, taking a taxi to Enniskerry, where I will be staying for 4 days.

My itinerary: Wild Wicklow tour on day 1,

Powers court and the waterfall day 2,

sheep farm in glendalough day 3,

and greystones day 4.

With lots of nature walks, seeing animals(as much as possible,) meeting locals, walking in villages, and going to pubs.

Is Wicklow the right place to do this? Is this too long of a stay? I'm not looking to do touristy things. I did that on my last trip. Am I missing any must sees in or around Wicklow?

I am a female traveling solo and not renting a car. Will use public transportation and taxis when necessary.

Does anyone have any feedback as far as my transportation goes?Am I being naive to think I will have access to public transportation and taxis between towns?

After Wicklow , I am going to Wexford (3 days) , Waterford (3 days), Cork (5 days). Last day in Dublin. I'm afraid this is long-winded, so I'll post my other stops in another thread.

BTW I live in the desert in the States, where it is brown, hot and ugly.

Glen Mill Golf Club - Stunning

I posted a few days ago about this fabulous par three course in North Wicklow. Played it this morning and wow, it’s in fantastic condition. The greens are the best I’ve ever seen them. Full credit to the groundskeepers. For €17 a round this is indisputably the best value golf around Dublin. Here’s a few photos from this morning. Sadly the pond on the signature 13th hole has dried up but that will soon be rectified when we have some rain.

Internet in Roundwood

Hi. We're looking at a property for sale in Roundwood, but after many calls to various providers it's not possible to have a broadband line brought in to the house until such time as full fibre has been rolled out into the village.

I'm wondering if anyone in Roundwood is working from home using a 4G/5G router or Starlink, and what your experience with it is?

Thanks.

Arklow Wicklow - 20km Radius

Looking for a house around arklow wicklow for rent that allows pets, I have 3 well behaved and toilet trained dogs that currently live 50/50 inside and outside (they have a big dog run outside my current house that they are in while we work and then come in when we are home and overnight) and 4 outdoor cats that only come in currently for feeding.

I know many landlords don’t allow pets anymore but our current one does so I know there are some out there🙏

I cannot pay more that 25hundred a month for rent. Little wiggle room.

Doesn’t need to be a massive house, 1-2 bedrooms would be plenty.

Me and my fiancé work full time currently and we are looking to move to Wicklow for a new job opportunity opened up to myself.

We are an English couple who just love our animals as if they were our kids.

I have lived in Ireland my whole life and my fiancé recently moved over here in the last few years.

I hope there is someone out there that has something for us as I really hope I don’t have to loose out on this amazing job opportunity 🙏🙏

Thank you

Hacketstown in October : is 1h from Wicklow NationalPark too much ?

Hello all, we are planning our third trip to Ireland this October, and we couldn't be more impatient ! (Especially with the massive heatwaves currently hitting France)

We absolutely adore the country, with a special place in our heart for the ring of Kerry. This time, we want to be 1h30 max from Dublin aeroport, and Wicklow country seems like a good option for people who are looking for beautiful areas with forests, parks, lakes and so on (and visits, for the rainy days).

Yet, we were not able to find a self-catering accommodation in the exact area that suited our price range, but one place in Hacketstown seems nice, not too expensive, and a good place to stay for our ten-days trip.

We don't know the area at all, do you have any recommandation, advices, or anything really ? Do you think one hour from the park would bé too much ? Are there anything nice to do in the area ? Should we try to coastal area ? So many question I know. (This will potentially bebour last trip before long, so I want to be sure before picking this specific area...)

Thank you for your help everyone !

Edit : thank you for taking the time to answer everyone ! We'll probably change our initial route plan, regarding the answers provided (maybe even try to go to a différent location, like Galway country).

Ballycomyn (blessinton) vs Foothills (killarnaden) vs Barrackfield (naas)— which would you choose?

We’re a couple with a young baby, currently living in Ballsbridge, and looking to buy our first home.
For those who know these areas/developments, what are the pros & cons of each, and which would you choose for a young family — especially regarding safety and the experience of raising a child there?
Thanks!

The Ghost of Glendalough

High in the Wicklow Mountains lies Glendalough, the ancient monastic settlement traditionally associated with St Kevin, who is believed to have established his monastery here in the sixth century.

But among the ruins and the dark waters of the valley lives another, more haunting legend, that of Kathleen, the Red Lady.

According to a later tradition, Kathleen became infatuated with Kevin, the hermit who had withdrawn from the world. She followed him to his cave, now known as St Kevin's Bed.

There are two versions of what happened next.

In the darker telling, Kevin rejected Kathleen's advances and pushed her from the rocks into the lake below, where she drowned.

Another version says that Kevin drove her away by stinging her with nettles. Kathleen eventually repented, became a convert and embraced a life of devotion.

There is no historical evidence that Kathleen actually existed, and the story appears to be part of the later folklore surrounding St Kevin and Glendalough.

But the legend doesn't end with her death.

For generations, people have claimed to see the ghost of a woman dressed in red wandering among the ruins.

In 1975, The Wicklow People reported three separate accounts of the “Ghost of Glendalough”, including a photograph allegedly showing a mysterious woman in red and a visitor who claimed to have seen a figure dressed in red disappear among the ruins.

Whether Kathleen was a real woman, a figure born from centuries of storytelling, or simply a legend given life by the atmosphere of Glendalough, her story remains part of the folklore of this ancient place.

Sugarloaf hike with small kids

Brought my young lads (8 and 4) up Sugarloaf and filmed the climb - they absolutely loved it.

Thought I'd post it here in case anyone's doing the hike soon or wants to see the route. Very family friendly climb and a great day out
