June Hobby Guide: looking to fill some gaps...

I've gotten some great input from Bushwick redditors in the past, so please let me know if you have any hobby happenings (dj classes, mahjong workshops, pickleball clinics etc) coming up that I can include in next month's roundup!

I tend to only include experiences that will really help someone dive into a new hobby and gain enough skill/community to feel equipped to keep going, but you know of shorter experiences (less than 2 hours), I can still include those in the weekly emails.

Thanks in advance 😄

Moving: South Slope vs Kensington living? Decisions, decisions!

Hello dear folk of South Slope / Windsor Terrace / Kensington!

I've been living in South Slope for a few years, am soon moving, and have the opportunity to stay in the area in a great apartment: close to the F/G, close to the Prospect Park Southwest entrance / Nitehawk, with 2 other mature roommates (30's & 40's), all lovely. Small living room, much character. Large bedroom.

At the same time, I've been offered to live in a large 2 bedroom in Kensington. Also close to trains, and still to the park. The bedroom is huge, and there's tons of storage, and I'd be sharing with just one other mature professional. It's enticing to me, so much so that I find myself considering it over a neighborhood I already know and love. It's also about $100 cheaper, though not the biggest deal-breaker.

I enjoy shared living, love being in the park, but am also quite the homebody.

I haven’t spent a ton of time in Kensington, so I’m curious: How do you Kensingtonians enjoy the neighborhood? What is special about it to you? Has anyone here moved to a nearby-but-different neighborhood for a better apartment setup and ended up missing their old neighborhood? Or did the extra space / calmer living situation end up being worth it?

P.S. I also adore Windsor Terrace, haven't had too much luck finding an apartment there, ya'll don't leave, it's too quaint <3

Flora Friday: Honey locust tree

If you are smelling something good in the neighborhood right now it is likely these tiny flowers. Honey locust trees flower in late spring and have a very sweet scent. Pollinators like native bees love them. They have lacy compound leaves (tiny leaflets on a central stem) and some honey locusts have thorns coming straight out of their trunks. Other do not. Later, bean-like pods form from the flowers and these drop in early winter. Honey locusts are resilient street trees because they survive a wide range of soil conditions as well as drought, and road salt. Tree pit tips: Do install a tree guard to discourage dogs from peeing on the root flare area. Do water in drought. Do not raise the soil around a tree's trunk to make a "bed" because this will cause the protective bark to rot and admit pathogens, and this kills the tree slowly. Crashing noises on Prospect Avenue?

Anyone know what the loud crashing noises are late at night (past midnight) on Prospect Avenue just west of Prospect Park West? It sounds like pallets being dropped from a height.

FlowersForAll lost their lease: looking to find a new ground floor space

The couple behind flowersforall_bk (Instagram) in Greenwood Heights lost their lease. They transformed their backyard from weeds to flower farm with the cutest little free flower stand (also sold flowers). Please share around Brooklyn subs so they can find another space.

Landlord question

My landlord did not renew my lease and just rented out my apartment for $600 more than I was paying. He did not give me a reason for the non-renewal. I know rent laws are changing but is that allowed?

Prospect Market Cat

I think I am in love! I've lived in the neighborhood a long time and have never seen this cat. His name is Benji, said one of the shelf packers at Prospect Market. Does he just live in the basement all the time? He is gorgeous. Shy, but friendly.
