Steam OS - is it worth it?
I plan to buy an Xbox ally X but wanted to know if steam OS can be installed and what features work or don’t work?? Also does anyone have a link to an install video?

Coming from the Legion Go S. I can say the only thing I kinda miss is the 8in screen. But the battery and performance upgrade from the LGS is night and day!
4tb SSD
SteamOS
TMR Thumbstick
Xbox Elite Dpad Mod
Colored ABXY
I wanted to solder 32gb or 64gb of RAM instead of the standard 24 buuuut that’s gunna have to wait. It’s perfect for now.
I upgraded from Steam Deck to Ally X. One of the key reasons was just compatibility. Proton is great nowadays, but not perfect and since I have games on Xbox, I want to utilise Play Anywhere. Getting third party stores installed is kind of a pain too.
So far I’ve been really liking FSE. It integrates various launchers just fine. Everything mostly just works fine and best of all there’s no compatibility issues whatsoever. I don’t really have to interact with Windows itself either.
Am I missing something here? I do think SteamOS is great and all, but for me I appreciate the better compatibility of Windows more and FSE is just surprisingly good.
I got this for $450 on the Facebook Marketplace back in February. I most play Assassin’s Creed games as that is my favorite franchise. It runs all of them well.
Guys, I really want o buy a base ally but can’t right now. Do you guys think that the price will say the same and/or get a sale this Christmas? Thx
I have a z13 flow as my main rig, but i wanted something portable for on the go gaming. Yes the z13 flow is great for portability, I just didnt like having to carry a controller. So I bought a white rog ally and now I can play from my bed with steam streaming. I genuinely couldn't be happier because I can play my main heavy dudy games off my main rig through streaming and play indie and solo games while im out / away! I think this is made for people who have a powerful rig, and want a secondary option it just makes sense! Not as a standalone all in one unless you are in a really really tight budget.
Last year in December, I decided I finally wanted to get myself a handheld PC. However, I was a bit short on cash at the time and decided to wait it out to see if prices would drop or if new budget options would launch. Fast forward to today, and the hardware market has completely blown up. We have beasts like the ROG Xbox Ally X, the newly announced OLED Xbox Ally X20, and crazy high-end stuff pushing well past the $1,000 mark. After doing a ton of fresh research, it feels like the base white ROG Xbox Ally (the Ryzen Z2A model) has effectively become the definitive "budget" king of the market right now. Because it's positioned as the entry point below the premium "X" and "X20" tiers, you can find the white Xbox Ally brand new on sale or refurbished for absolute steals.
Even with the newer chips out, that Z2A processor handles modern games incredibly well, it boots straight into that seamless console-like Xbox UI, and the 1080p 120Hz VRR screen is still incredible for the price. Am I missing something, or is the white ROG Xbox Ally genuinely the best bang-for-your-buck entry point into handheld PC gaming right now if you don't want to spend a fortune? Are there any other hidden budget contenders I should look at before I pull the trigger?
TL;DR: Waited since last December to buy a handheld PC, and now the market is flooded with expensive new hardware like the X20. Is the base white ROG Xbox Ally (Z2A) effectively the only true "budget" king left in 2026 due to its lower price bracket, or am I missing a hidden contender?
Ok so I pulled the trigger on getting the Xbox Ally X tonight and will be picking it up tomorrow. Now I need to know of any games that you would suggest that are either apart of Xbox game pass or dirt cheap on steam. I have a PS5 and a non-gaming PC so my backlog is pretty non existent at the moment (not a bad thing). I know I could obviously pick up some older AAA titles but I want to know some hidden gems of the people who play the machine everyday (or damn near close to)
Had an Xbox Series S. Once I heard the XAX was coming, pre-ordered immediately. Since I had this, completely switched off playing console. I have a set-up to make this a desktop PC where I play steam games, then I just easily disconnect for on the go or around the house.
And yes, still in perfectly fine condition with no add-ons. No screen protector, holder, case, or extra memory. Suprised on how I haven't messed it up or scratched it, but I'm pretty safe with it.
Diablo 4 is a good game on this btw, have hundreds of hours. Has handheld and PC controls. This is just a great all around device for anything.
The downside: GTA6 coming out and no pc release, yet. May need to dust off the Series S, if it runs it well.
So, I’m basically just wondering. For those who have both of these devices, my main questions are:
Is the screen on the XBOX ALLY X a problem?
Which ones software is better, and better yet easier to navigate and handle
How different do the ergonomics feel, and is it a deal breaker for the Claw?
Does the XBOX ally feel “cheap” or does the Claw just feel a little more “premium”
Are the buttons really a “problem” per se on the XBOX Ally X, and are the joy cons not being hall a deal breaker?
My main things are: comfortability/ergonomics, power, easy to navigate software, and not “cheap” feeling.
So I’ve been looking into getting one, and I’m very tempted. I already have a PS5 at home, but the main reason I’d buy this is because I travel a lot and spend plenty of time on planes. I love playing video games, so it seems like the obvious answer is to buy it but is it really worth the $1,000?
If you just want to experience OLED and already have an OLED tablet or phone (I use an S25 Ultra and an S11 Tablet), you can use a capture card to turn your mobile device into a monitor.
As far as I can tell, there’s virtually no noticeable delay. I’ve played a few games this way, especially Monster Hunter Wilds, and it felt very responsive. I did experience some lag when using SuperDisplay over a wireless connection, but I haven’t had that issue with my capture card.
I’m using a Hagibis capture card that I bought from AliExpress.
The OLED screen is absolutely amazing, but of course, the Ally X’s screen is already more than good enough for gaming.
So I recently got my XAX and I actually enjoyed windows and the full screen experience on it. I then installed Bazzite and didn’t bother dual booting. However now I’m starting to regret that decision. There’s no real reason to why, I like being able to suspend my console at any given moment however I’m unsure about updating drivers, and honestly I really liked armory crates settings like being able to change the resolution of the whole system etc. I know it’s petty but it’s really bugging me whether I should go back or stay.
Moin erstmal,
könntet ihr mir nützliches Zubehör für die Xbox Ally X empfehlen?
Con RSR attivo, volevo sapere quali sono le impostazioni ideali per Crimson desert? ho fatto alcune prove ma il risultato non è dei migliori
So, I switched over to Steam OS just now. In the settings screen on Steam OS, the screen is flickering every few seconds pretty badly.
I suspect it’s my graphics drivers, but I’m unsure of how to update them here.
Has anyone else dealt with this?
Q me recomiendan hacer, pongo el comando y nada Q abre el juego es para poner un mod
I usually check the store app and the Xbox app but good games usually aren’t on sale and I don’t want to buy them through steam. Where is the best place for deals on windows games?
I am curious what would perform better the steam machine or the Xbox rog ally x with a egpu since both would be around the same price
