Diego's arrest: A merit of Rafael's or a failure of Diego's?

When Don Rafael arrives at Don Diego's ranch, he already knows for sure that Diego is Zorro. Which leads me to the next question: Is Diego's arrest a credit to Rafael or a mistake on Don Diego's part?

A scene I love.

I love the scene where Love shows Alejandro her brother's head, and instead of having a fit of rage, Alejandro even reacts comically. I love it because it underscores that Vega's training isn't just physical but emotional, and that Alejandro has learned from it. It also serves to illustrate Love's sadism.

If Don Diego had killed Rafael at the hacienda.

Let's suppose Don Diego had killed Rafael when he went to arrest him, in that sword fight. What would have happened to Diego? Would Rafael's men have killed him, or arrested him? Would he have faced a public trial for killing the former governor of California? Would his identity as Zorro have been revealed?

The fortune of Don Diego de la Vega

If you remember the mask of Zorro, Montero catches Don Diego at the beginning of the film. He sends him to prison but what happened to Don Diego de la Vega's fortune? Because Alejandro and Elena live like aristocrats.

Is Alejandro de La Vega the Edmund Dantes of Zorro?

If you watch The Mask of Zorro, you'll see the similarities between this film and The Count of Monte Cristo. For example, Rafael loved Esperanza as Fernand loved Mercedes, Diego's unjust imprisonment is similar to Edmund's, and the character of Alejandro is very similar to Edmund's. Both suffer injustice (the death of a brother, imprisonment), both are mentored by an older man, both appear to society as aristocrats, and both seek revenge. In fact, Alejandro changes his name from Murrieta to De La Vega.

If Don Diego had never had that encounter with Montero on the balcony, would he have been discovered?

In other words, when Montero arrives at the La Vega ranch, he already knows, even before seeing the wound, that it's Zorro. This is possible because he saw Diego in pain from the wound, or because on the balcony, Diego called him Rafael and he recognized him by his voice. But if Diego had never had that encounter with Rafael on the balcony, would Rafael have discovered him?

Don Diego playing with shadow puppetry (Douglas Fairbanks, 1920)

Prior to 1920, Douglas Fairbanks’s film career was largely comedy—which made him perfectly equipped, as Don Diego, to play the bungling foppish dandy so no-one suspects that he is really EL ZORRO!
