Daytime 22°!
Due to time of day a circumzenithal arc was also visible with the eye, it is the largest I have seen. It went about 180° around a circle, but I couldn’t take a picture as my camera could not pick it up

Got a few pics of these halos and a tiny slice of the circumhorizontal arc but it didn’t show up as good in the pics as it did in person
I just saw the sun today and it looked like this. What’s the reason behind this?
Was outside and noticed this bright spot sitting at the same height as the sun but way off to the side. Turns out it’s a parhelion (sun dog), caused by ice crystals in the cirrus clouds refracting sunlight. Managed to grab a few shots from different spots before it faded.
Is this a 22 degree halo? Is the arc and its distance from the sun also roughly equal to the orbit of Mercury as well, someone told me that once it was one of the planets orbits roughly matched. Thanks!
This is so beautiful to look at. Nature has so many wonderful phenomena. :)
I saw my first iridescent cloud today! It lasted for about 10 minutes before fading
It’s very feint but for the briefest second I swear there’s some green in there.
I used the night mode btw
A colleague at McMurdo Station Antarctica showed me this photo someone took of a ring in the sky. It’s been passed around station. None of us can figure out what it is. Anyone recognize this phenomenon?
Edit: consensus is it’s a smoke/vapor ring. The cold air at McMurdo probably preserved the shape far longer than normal, and sunlight hitting the ice crystals that formed around it caused the glow. Likely from an exhaust stack or vehicle on the base. I didn’t know a ton of details but was caught off guard at first when I saw it. Rumors spread like wildfire here too, so whoever took this… nice.
Our first day in Japan treated us to our first ever halo!
