Hey, Belarusians, I can see that you don’t like your country’s current flag – you don’t like it or feel it doesn’t represent you, at least some of you. If you want, I’ll take it down and put this one up instead.

This is my personal mural of flags

A/HRC/62/52: Report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus. Summary of the new report.

🔴 Freedom of association and freedom of assembly remain nearly non-existent. Authorities continue to detain and convict individuals arbitrarily.

🔴 April 2025 to March 2026, 11 media outlets have been designated as extremist. In 2025, 479 Telegram channels were designated as "extremist material". People have been persecuted for subscribing, commenting, reposting, or "liking" online materials that have been designated as "extremist".

🔴 State authorities have systematically denied access to information on judicial proceedings.

🔴 State uses misuse of counter-terrorism and anti-extremism legislation for persecution of opposition figures, human rights defenders, journalists, and activists, including cultural and academic actors. Individuals face serious, prolonged denial of their rights and ill-treatment.

🔴Belarus remains the only European country with a death penalty. Anti-death penalty materials are designated as "extremist".

🔴 The state has systematically abused and denied the rights of imprisoned persons. The abuse includes both physical and psychological violence. Even minors have faced abuse by the authorities, such as placement in isolation. There has been systematic gender-based violence conducted against female prisoners. Authorities don't properly investigate and prosecute incidents.

🔴 33 individuals subjected by courts to coercive psychiatric treatment following prosecutions for exercising their rights, including by participating in protests and for allegedly insulting officials.

🔴 954 political prisoners. The latest wave of repression has targeted those supporting Ukraine. Authorities continue to harass and surveil people in exile, political prisoners, and their lawyers.

🔴 Absentia trials against exiled activists, using them as a routine tool alongside public “demonstrations” of property seizures and forced entry. Authorities designate exiled organizations and social media content as "extremist". Such designations expose individuals in Belarus interacting with and accessing the sites of such organizations to legal liability.

🔴 Discriminatory legislation targeting LGBTQ+ people. The situation for LGBTIQ+ individuals in Belarus is worsening, marked by legislative discrimination and increased harassment by law enforcement. Transgender persons face additional barriers, particularly in accessing healthcare and legal gender recognition.

🔴 The Belarusian language is subjected to systematic marginalization. Activists who maintain and promote the Belarusian language have faced persecution. Independent Belarusian-language initiatives have been suppressed.

🔴 Stigmatization and targeting by the state have also been against Polish and Lithuanian minorities. Religious minorities face restrictions.

Moving to Minsk as an expat - what should I expect?

Hi everyone,

I’ll be moving to Minsk soon for work as an expat from Turkey. I’d like to hear practical advice about daily life, housing, cost of living, winter, transport, banking, Russian language, social life and business culture.

Any honest tips or things you wish you knew before moving to Belarus would be very helpful.

Thanks

Card Train Station. Brest, 1973

Historical note

The original Brest railway station opened in 1886 under Emperor Alexander III. After suffering heavy damage during World War I, it was rebuilt in the Polish “national style” during the interwar period. Between 1953 and 1957, the station underwent a massive reconstruction designed by architect G. Granatkin, transforming it into a prime example of Stalinist Empire architecture with a tower reaching approximately 43 meters in height.

Present day

Today, the Brest-Centralny railway station remains a vital transport hub on the border of Belarus. The building is officially recognized as an architectural monument of national heritage, with its historical appearance, including the signature spire and star, carefully preserved.

Would tourism be difficult for someone who doesn't speak Belarusian or Russian? I can only speak lithuanian and English.

Cool country. Always wanted to visit.

PP Passport (Expired)

I apologize in advance because I know this question and ones like it have been asked many times, but I’m seeing a variety of answers on the subject. I currently have an expired PP series Belarusian passport. Is it possible to renew it through the consulate in Washington DC or is it mandatory to travel back to Minsk to renew it? If travel back to Minsk is necessary what is the turnaround time to receive the new passport?

For Belarusians: How would you describe your level of Belarusian?

I am Latvian and have been curious how Belarusians preserve their language especially in light that regime is supressing and stigmatizing Belarusian language.

Do Civil servants, police, gov Office etc speak Belarusian or russian? Are the Keyboards in Belarusian language?

I see this occasionally on instagram: Belarusian borderguard account. Caption is in Belarusian and based on my russian skills...the officer is talking Belarusian.

Is this just coincidence? Do they all speak Belarusian? If so, the keyboards for the computer must also be Belarusian no?
