Hiring a Driver/Car for the day

My family and I will be in Bermuda (coming in on a cruise ship) this June. We are looking into hiring a driver/car for the whole day, so all of us can see the sites together. We definitely want to do the zoo/aquarium, and there is a small beach my husband and I love to go to when we are there, he has the coordinates saved. Else, we’d love to do some sightseeing together, so we’d like to have someone for the whole day. I know when you get off the ship there’s a ton of taxis/people advertising tours for the day, but the last time we were in Bermuda, my husband and I hired a cab to take us and our toddler to the aquarium, and he asked if we wanted him to come back for us, and we told him yes and estimated 3 hours. He did not come back. The lovely woman working at the front desk at the aquarium/zoo contacted her friend who is a driver, who came to take us back and we loved, but unfortunately we don’t have contact info for him, only his Venmo, so I’m unsure we’ll be able to book with him.

So that was my very long way of asking for recommendations. We would love to hire someone for the whole day, who we know will be there when we are ready to leave wherever we are. We will be 8 adults and 1 toddler, so a mini bus situation would be best. If anyone has any recs, I would love them! I understand with gas prices being what they are, especially on the island, this may not be a cheap thing, but not looking for cheap, just looking for friendly, and reliable!

Gosling's...

This is a half serious post, so please bear with me. Disclaimer disclosure: I am not an alcoholic. Since the last week of April, I have been struggling to find Goslings canned Dark and Stormy around town... I was told yesterday by a staff member from Goslings that they won't have it for another 2 weeks. Bermuda Day and perfect beach weather are coming up/here and I can't have my favorite national drink in a can for another 2 weeks. This is quite sacrilege! Yes, I could make it at home or lug the ingredients to the beach, but where is the convenience in that? If this is a creative marketing campaign Goslings, not cool... not cool... Thank you for your time and Happy Bermuda Day! 🇧🇲

Diaspora / moving to Bermuda

Hi all 👋🏽

Couldn’t find any related posts in the search.

I am Bermudian diaspora in my early thirties (I was born overseas to a Bermudian parent) and have visited every two years or so for most of my life. I have no children.

I have received confirmation of my Bermuda status and have no family on island. It is important for me to live in Bermuda even if for a short period.

My questions:

- If you only had one year in Bermuda what experiences would you prioritize? As an example I have only attended cup match once as a child so I am excited for this as an adult!
- Should I be successful in my job search I hope to make friends with colleagues but are there groups (like rotary or similar) to help with this?
- Where is the best place for me to make Bermudian friends outside of work? Where I live pickleball is a big sport as an example.
- Is there any advise you would give me? My parent left Bermuda as a teenager. I try to stay as informed as possible but noting this it is hard.

TIA 🙏

Catamaran Reco?

I’m trying to pick a catamaran company to go on a half day boat excursion in June. We’re in between Restless Native and Kirk’s Adventures Good Vibrations. Has anyone used either of these? We will be 3 girls in our 20s so I’d like to pick one that is more lively and fun, playing music onboard, etc. Not looking for an informational tour. TYIA

Gift Card Ideas

I have a coworker going to Bermuda on a cruise - I take the same one a month or so after her - I’d love to surprise her with a gift card to somewhere awesome on the island - any ideas or hints on places where I can buy GC remotely and she would enjoy with her husband?

They are a couple in their late 50s traveling for their anniversary

Thanks!

Ways to meet people on the island - sports/social etc.

We're keen to meet people around our age - late 20s/early 30s, no kids.

We like culture, sports (watching and playing), fitness etc. We're also open to trying new things, so if there's any social clubs worth checking out, we're up for giving them a go.

Is there anything you've joined or come across online - facebook/instagram etc - that you'd recommend?

Sidenote: I've seen the International Women's Club of Bermuda mentioned a million times, so I'm aware of it.

My husband's also interested in playing football/soccer - any Sunday league/casual kickabouts going?
We know it's cricket season, but does that really mean no one anywhere is playing footie at all?!

Toddler Friendly Resort

Looking for recommendations for a family friendly resort.

I’d like a beach on property, preferably not in a bay.

I don’t care about child care as our child will stay with us.

I was seriously considering The Reefs but seeing recent reviews of how it’s looking run down and the food not being very good, I’m having misgivings.

We’ll be off the resort for a few activities as well. Do people just travel around with car seats for taxis or Ubers?

Bermuda for handicapped...

We will taking a cruise and will be in Bermuda for 3 days in a little over a week.
My husband is recently handicapped... an illness caused complete hearing loss in one ear, and extremely limited in the other one, and it has left him with very bad balance. He uses a cane to help for short distances and for longer distances he has a scooter.
We are taking his smaller, more portable electric scooter for the cruise.
One of the days will be renting an electric car (I always drive since he can no longer drive) and exploring the Island with it. We pick up the car near the ship so that shouldn't be a problem. But I was wondering if there is enough space in the electric car to fit the scooter. I know the cars are tiny, but it does state it can fit "luggage". The scooter is fairly small and fits in the truck of both our cars, one being a smaller Honda Insight sportyish car. Has anyone had any experience with this? (for reference the scooter is a Pride Gogo Traveller)
Also, if we are lucky enough to be able to fit the scooter, will there be 120v availabilty to charge it? We will have an adapter with us. Chances are the scooter's battery would last long enough anyway.
If we can't fit the scooter and he needs to navigate out of the car with only his cane, does anyone have any suggestions of places to go that doesn't have a lot of walking?
There will be times he will spend with other members of the group that are also not so mobile and I will be with some others who are doing an activity or tour they can't do. I just don't want to abandon him the whole time. We used to love doing the catamaran tours... but he's afraid of his balance on those boats now :(
Our first cruise since his issues... just trying to make sure he still has a great time.
TIA for any suggestions.

Is Bermuda cooked?

How is anyone in this younger generation supposed to get a job and provide for themselves in this economy. I’m 21 and work over full time hours yet I will never be able to afford a house, or even a car on this island. Let alone be able to move out of my parents house.

Can’t get a job without experience, can’t get experience without having a job.
Can’t get into affordable college/uni with just a GED, can’t get a good job without a degree.

Anyone else feel this way?

Rental cost decline- off season? Grocery ?

Two specific questions for anyone who has lived there a year or more.

  1. Rentals: Does a 1BHK market soften at any point in the year? Better inventory, more landlord flexibility, lower asking price? Which months are realistically the best window to search? Any parishes you suggest I should look during these. My work is in Hamilton city.

  2. Groceries: Has the cost of everyday basics moved much recently? Eggs, milk, fruit, veg, meat. I cook most meals at home so this line item matters more than eating out. Any stores or habits that keep the weekly shop reasonable?

Looking for people who actually navigated this and have a rough number or timing that worked for them.

Roaming issue with Digicel

I have two international numbers that I use to receive SMS in Bermuda.

About a few weeks ago, they stopped receiving messages; they previously seemed to connect via Digicel.

Additionally, my LTE roaming from Freedom Mobile (Canada) has been cutting in and out.

Are you experiencing any issues with Digicel roaming?
