55+ Communities

Hello Everyone - I am looking into 55+ communities for my MIL and would love some honest feedback.

If you've lived in one ( or have had family) can you share your experience - the good, the bad, the ugly - anything you wish you had know before choosing?

Beekeeping 🐝

Hi! Would anyone be available to be a mentor for beekeeping in the area? I have a place to put the hive but don’t know how to bee-keep. I e contacted several places in the area that say they offer classes but they haven’t gotten back to me. Thank you!🙏

Drought drains Southwest Florida water reserve, officials say supply is secure

Standing on the wall of a reservoir the size of about four golf courses, it’s easy to see the impact of Southwest Florida’s extreme water shortage.

Operated by the Peace River Manasota Regional Water Supply Authority, the reservoir is built to hold 6 billion gallons of water. It is now half empty, and the distance between the current waterline and the visible mark where the water normally sits is striking.

The lack of water has become dangerous for local ecosystems, but as far as drinkable water supply is concerned, officials say they’re not panicking yet. Even if the drought continues through this year’s rainy season, officials are confident they can refill the supply before the end of the summer.

Plant scene in Bradenton?

Hi everyone!

I’ve very recently become obsessed with all things plants and gardening despite having absolutely no knowledge or experience whatsoever. Something about being in Florida has gotten me completely hooked.

I know there’s a Bradenton/Sarasota facebook group but it doesn’t seem super active.
Does anyone know about anything else? Also is there a place to bring compost or get existing compost? Unfortunately I live in an apartment so I don’t have a way of using my own but I’d love to contribute.

Essentially I think I’m looking for likeminded people and any ways to lean into my hobby more.

Thank you in advance!

What’s the Dumbest Repair You’ve Successfully Ignored for an Impressive Amount of Time?

My wife asked me today when I was finally going to fix the bathroom door that sticks.

I told her it’s only been 3 years and I’m still studying the problem.

Got me wondering what everyone else has in their house that’s technically broken but everyone’s just adapted to at this point 😂

You know:

  • the cabinet you have to hip check
  • the outlet nobody trusts
  • the drawer with “the trick”
  • the light switch that may or may not control anything
  • the toilet handle jiggle
  • the fan that makes “the sound”

What’s the repair in your house that somehow became part of daily life instead of getting fixed?

Will Bradenton officials raise water rates? Why increases may start next month

This is all I could get as there is a paywall:

Three dollar average increase per month??

  • Bradenton officials may raise utility rates, with more increases likely to follow after city leaders emphasized a critical need for infrastructure funding.
  • City council members reviewed staff’s request to increase city utility rates by 7.5% at the May 6 workshop meeting. If approved during a vote in June, the rates would be effective immediately and would result in a $3 increase on the average utility bill.

Hello, looking for help to find work please

I was trying to get some help/insight (again) to look for work around bradenton to north sarasota area. I've had no luck finding a job for months now and not really sure why.

I'm a 22 year old guy with a car, clean record and no substances. 4 years of retail-fast food experience. I'm going to MTC school in august so not sure if an apprenticeship is possible, but I'd love to get into something like welding, electronics or other trade ish roles if anyone around is willing to train on job. Otherwise if there's any stores that are looking for someone let me know, thank you :)

New Developments

Which parts of Bradenton are growing the fastest?

Besides the LWR area, I’m familiar with the new “Seaflower”? development in West Bradenton off of 75th and Cortez.

Builder fee for not using their preferred lender?

We have signed a contract to build a home with Medallion Home in Parrish, FL. We were hoping to not have to get a mortgage as we were thinking the proceeds from the sale of our current home would cover most of if not all of the new home. However, it’s looking like we’re gonna have to take out a mortgage now as our current home has yet to sell.

There is a clause in our contract that says if we don’t use Medallion’s preferred lender, they will charge us $3500. Another homeowner in the same subdivision told us that they were able to skirt that clause because they found that it was illegal for Medallion Home to charge for a non-preferred lender. We found similar statements on the web, but do not have a legal citation to back it.

Can anyone provide me a legal citation that backs this position?

Thank you.

No Trees??

Why are there so many complexes with zero trees? Especially the new developments. Is there no laws that require a certain amount of trees on properties??
