June Hobby Guide: looking to fill some gaps...

I've gotten some great input from Bushwick redditors in the past, so please let me know if you have any hobby happenings (dj classes, mahjong workshops, pickleball clinics etc) coming up that I can include in next month's roundup!

I tend to only include experiences that will really help someone dive into a new hobby and gain enough skill/community to feel equipped to keep going, but you know of shorter experiences (less than 2 hours), I can still include those in the weekly emails.

Thanks in advance 😄

The Five Families that built Brooklyn Heights

I recently led a Jane’s Walk around Brooklyn Heights talking about the families that shaped the neighborhood. I figured this community would enjoy learning about them, too :)

Brownstones - woodblock print

Printmaker's tribute to Brooklyn's iconic Brownstones. I turned 40 and spent the next 6 weeks working on this 3 color woodcut.

Planter designer / gardener recommendations?

Looking for recommendations for someone in Brooklyn/NYC who does smaller-scale residential patio/deck landscaping — specifically container/planter design vs. full backyard landscaping.

I have a backyard/deck space and want help figuring out:
- plant selection
- sourcing/shopping
- actual planting/install

Not looking for a super high-end landscape architecture firm or major construction project — more so an independent designer/gardener/contractor who can consult, shop locally, and help execute within a reasonable budget.

Would love any personal recs (or people to avoid). Thanks!

Heads up if you live in a 10+ unit building in Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, Fort Greene, Downtown BK, Boerum Hill, or Cobble Hill:

DSNY just dropped a proposed rule that’s going to affect your building directly. They are expanding the mandatory on-street trash container pilot into our area (Brooklyn CD2).

Here is the timeline:
👉 Buildings with 31+ units: Mandatory city bins by Oct 15, 2026.
👉 Buildings with 10–30 units: You have to either opt into the city bins OR buy your own approved rigid containers.
👉 The opt-in window is July 1 to July 31. If you miss it, you're automatically in the program.
👉 Fines start at $100 and go up to $300.

Building owners are going to be responsible for keeping them clean, clear of snow/ice, and keeping 1.5 feet of clearance around them.

If you want to weigh in, there is a public hearing on June 17 via Teams, or you can email comments to nycrules@dsny.nyc.gov.

I was reading through the full city procurement drop for today, and there’s also nearly $1M in summer youth job funding going to St. Nicks Alliance for Brooklyn. You can see all the exact rules, fines, and contract numbers here:

Smith & Bergen Brooklyn

Hi fellow New Yorkers,

I’m looking to rent a place on smith & Bergen in cobble hill Brooklyn. I’d love some insight into the safety of this area. Bergen st station will be my local, and with gowanus housing close I’m a bit worried about the sort of people that will be around. Also with the new jail being built on Atlantic.

Please tell me your honest thoughts/ experiences!

TLDR: 31F Brooklyn Heights fangirl and 🍀🐈‍**⬛ looking for a room. Move in: Ju**ne 1; Budget: $1900

First and foremost, I’ve always been in love with Brooklyn Heights. The gorgeous tree lined streets, the architectural preservation, the charm, the character, the promenade overlooking the water and the beautiful city. I could go on. It’s the first place I head to when I’ve had a stressful day and need to decompress; I’ll walk around and take in the peace and the charm and it always calms me. It’s always been my dream to one day call it home and become a member of the community.

So, as I find myself having to move rather suddenly—come June 1st I have to be out of my current apartment—I thought now was the time to shoot my shot.

A bit about me: I’m 31F, a student (went back to undergrad later in life) studying human rights and sociocultural anthropology, and I have a very sweet, non-destructive, goofy cat who will be your best friend if you let him, so I’m looking for a pet-friendly apt.

As a roommate/tenant I’m very friendly, clean, responsible, respectful, and a nonsmoker. I like to have a few friends over for a nice dinner every now and again but otherwise like to keep my home as a peaceful sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and have never been the type to bring the party home.

I have references available from current and past roommates and people I’ve subleased from that can attest to the fact that I’m a good roommate and tenant and have always paid rent/utilities on time while leaving the space just as clean as I found it.

I have a living stipend through my scholarship, will be working as a server, and have a guarantor if necessary.

Budget: $1900 at the very top

If anyone is seeking a roommate or knows of someone who is and I sound like a match, please send them my way! And since I’m already shooting my shot, if anyone knows of any crazy unicorn 1 bedroom deals, or could direct me on how to find them myself, I would also be very interested, though I understand that’s much less likely.

This was long so if you read to the end I appreciate you! Any leads or suggestions would be very much appreciated 🙏
