Replacement arrived with no screen gunk!

I know there tends to be a negativity bias online. People are a lot more likely to post when something goes wrong than when everything works out. So I wanted to share a little hope for anyone dealing with the screen gunk issue and waiting on a replacement.

I received my replacement yesterday and… NO SCREEN GUNK!

It took about a week from start to finish, and I’m on the East Coast in the US. I worked with someone named Gleb on their support team, and he was quick to respond and helpful throughout the process.

Obviously I can only speak to my experience, but figured I’d share since most of what you see tends to be the problem cases. There are good replacements making it out there!

Gunk cleaning

This isn’t a comment on gunk existing or not existing. I understand people’s issue with the gunk. It’s merely a comment showing that it can be easily cleaned with some alcohol wipes and a good microfiber cloth. (I used the one that came with my iPad)

It took me 5 wipes (alcohol evaporates quickly after all) and about 15 minutes and I have a perfectly clean screen with no scratches.

Be patient and use the proper tools and it will clean up just fine.

Just got mine, question about google calendar integration

So i’ve been trying to connect my work calendar. According to the documentation there should be a settings icon somewhere on my calendar next to the remove button but i’m not seeing it. Sharing a screenshot from my phone but it’s not showing up in my desktop browser either. there’s no option to edit at all on this screen, just remove.

2 Busy bars, twice the problems.

Sorry guys, the concept is great, I had been looking for this type of display for years... But this ain't it.

I was ticked off by the fact that the US got their stuff before Canada, I was ticked off that you wouldn't charge me in USD instead of your terrible CAD exchange rate, but I figured the product would be good.

Turns out I got #1 like this, support sent me another and as I start to peel the protector... it's still covered in glue.

Y'all may be using the most fragile plastic in the world for this, you should have charged $5 more and shipped them with a preinstalled screen protector.

I will leave software aside for this review as that can be improved, but this v1 hardware isn't worth $300. The wheel on my first unit was extremely imprecise (didn't try the second one) and it was unusable with the app, only in wired mode. Battery life was also very poor.

All in all, I will try building my own LED dot matrix display with an ESP32 for now, I'm out. I would rather return it and get a full refund, hopefully after 2 defective bars that's an option.

It worked for 30 minutes 😢

I’ve got the adhesive issue and queued a ticket with support. Decided to update firmware to latest, then see what it’s capable of while waiting. Was running the out of the box busy timer and screen went blank five minutes in. Back panel thinks it’s active and timer isn’t ticking, front panel isn’t displaying anything. Is this thing seriously bricked already by normal usage?

App: Status Rotator

I made another little native app for the BUSY Bar, this time mainly as a fun way to show off different graphics and animations.

It runs completely locally on the device, just like my Meeting Cost app. No browser, API, PC connection or cloud stuff needed once it’s flashed.

The app pulls both animations and still images directly from the BUSY Bar’s existing firmware asset folders, so it can reuse the graphics that are already there instead of duplicating them, and you can choose which ones you want.

You can scroll through the available statuses with the wheel, and the list wraps around continuously, so there’s no real beginning or end. The rear display shows the current status in the middle with inverted colors, along with the surrounding items so you can see what’s coming next and what you just passed.

I also started adding my own custom animations to the same system. So far I’ve made a little Pac-Man animation, which turned out way better than I expected 😄

Mostly just a small show-and-tell project, but I’m having way too much fun turning the BUSY Bar into a tiny animated status machine.

Quality Control is NOT Fixed

I held off purchasing the BusyBar to wait for reviews, and was glad I did after seeing all the screen glue residue posts. Eventually BusyBar addressed the issue and stated that it was resolved. I took this to mean that I was safe to purchase and would receive a unit with no problems. But lo and behold, my screen is covered in sticky gunk. I’m very disappointed that they claimed to have fixed the problem yet I still received this mess.

2nd unit still has non-removable glue residue!

I just received my 2nd unit. This one again has glue residue over the entire screen. I again tried to use the recommended method and again the residue is just not coming off. Am sending this one back, too. The question is whether it's worth trying for a 3rd unit? *sigh*

Another BUSY Bar with glue residue + micro-scratches

Just received my BUSY Bar and unfortunately seem to have the same issue others have reported here.

After removing the protective film, there’s visible adhesive/glue residue on the display, along with several fine micro-scratches on the screen surface.

I haven’t tried aggressively cleaning it because I don’t want to risk scratching the display even more.

Pretty disappointing to see this straight out of the box on a brand new device.

I’ve opened a support ticket and can share the ticket number with the BUSY team if needed. Hopefully they can sort this out with a replacement from an unaffected batch.

More disappointment - Battery issue contact support.

Welp...mine died. Doesn't turn on, when you hold back for 20s or so it says Battery Issue - Contact support.

The glue issue, now battery issues. Sounds like a bad launch and the beginning of a lot of QA issues.

Fuck Busy Bar. The first batch of new products suffers from so many quality issues. How could the support department fail to reply to even a single email?

Feature request BUSY Bar Battery Recharge

I am unsure if there is an official Chanel for feature requests?

Just received my BUSY Bar few days ago and after cleaning the mess with glue residue 😑 with my own process using (a lot of) isopropyl alcohol stollen to my 3D Printer and a micro fiber cloth and a lot of time - all good now - i am starting playing with it.

I realize the battery is draining after a day of use and will loose 10% during a night in standby. With that said, I see already that my BUSY Bar will remain plugged most of the time on my desk.

With that said, I think we need a feature to limit the recharge to 80% to preserve the battery capacity.

VeryBUSY: A highly extensible custom firmware for the BUSY Bar.

Hey Everyone.

You might remember me from my WIP Doom Implementation post last week. This week, I have something new that will allow you to do much more with your device.

VeryBUSY: A highly extensible custom firmware for the BUSY Bar.

Features:

  • Install Javascript, Python, or Native FAP (Flipper Application Package) Applications locally, on device.
  • Doom running natively (via FAP file) on device.
  • A new Apps tab in the Web UI, with the ability to drag/drop a .js/.py/.fap or packaged app bundle. Allows you to launch/stop/remove apps straight from the Web UI (including system apps).
  • Storage and memory usage bars.
  • File viewer with text editing/downloading/uploading/deleting abilities.
  • OTA updates from my own update feed, with a one-click switch back to the official stock firmware if desired.
  • Fixes for a handful of upstream bugs.
  • Was able to recover/free a small amount of flash + RAM.

It's built on the official 1.1.1 firmware and the full source is in the repo.

Installing uses the same path as the official release. Download the update from the releases tab and update it in the Web UI via the "Update from File" option.

This is, of course, unofficial firmware, and I am not liable for your bricked device. I am not affiliated with BUSY. Use this at your own risk.

Please let me know any questions you might have. I intend on updating this semi-frequently.

Feature request: disable countdown for pomodoro

I find it quite distracting (and slightly strenuous) to see the large numbers count down when using the pomodoro feature. It would be amazing if we could customize how time elapsing is displayed - like a more minimal progress bar, for example? I think that would draw less attention to the Busy Bar when attention should be focused on work. Thoughts? Anyone else agree?

Magnetic Wall Mount for BUSY Bar

Was interested in the official Wall Mount, but I would like a way to add magnets so I can snap it to a server rack at work or my fridge at home.

I couldn't find any existing solution, so I designed my own 3D model that prints pretty well in PLA, PETG, or even PC that matches the actual housing of the Bar.

The hooks are tuned to use the natural sag of the filament during 90° overhangs to click into the back of the BUSY Bar and lock in place. Fully portable, no need for gravity or screwing directly to the Bar itself!

If you are interested, check out the model and print profile on MakerWorld:

https://makerworld.com/en/models/3153233-busy-bar-magnetic-wall-mount

Features:

  • 4x slots for D16x3mm neodymium magnets, plenty strong to hold up the BUSY Bar
  • Optionally, in place of magnets, holes for #8 (5/32 in.) screws to mount directly to the wall
  • Optionally, flat back so you can also use double-sided tape in place of either screws or magnets
  • Prints flat, no support
  • Sits flush with the back of the device, allowing full access to the bottom of the Bar for USB connection

App: Meeting Cost

Hi everyone! I made a little native app called Meeting Cost for the BUSY Bar, mainly because I wanted something mildly terrifying to put on the table during meetings.

It’s not using the BUSY API, a browser, or a PC connection. It’s a proper app compiled directly into the BUSY Bar firmware, so once flashed it runs completely standalone on the device.

The app has the same general menu/navigation style as the built-in Clock app:

Start immediately starts a meeting using the saved settings, while Settings lets me configure participant count, meeting duration, hourly cost per person, and how often the displayed cost updates (1/2/5/10 seconds). The settings are stored locally on the device.

During a meeting, the front RGB display shows the running cost together with a progress bar. The bar grows as the meeting progresses and continuously changes colour from green towards red as it approaches 100%. I made it 5 pixels high so it’s actually visible rather than being a sad little single-pixel line.

The rear display shows the remaining meeting time and current cost, while the front effectively shows the meeting progressing. The Start button pauses/resumes the timer, and Back opens an “End meeting?” screen instead of accidentally killing the session.

If the meeting runs past the configured duration, the progress bar stays fully red, the timer goes into overtime, the cost keeps increasing, and the cost text starts gently pulsing between red and almost white as a subtle “this meeting should probably have ended by now” alarm.

I also made custom app icons; a tiny gold coin on the colour display and a matching monochrome coin for the rear.

In the future I'm planning on adding a selector to show/use different currencies.

So basically it turns every meeting into a live financial damage counter. Completely unnecessary. I love it.

How are people creating custom apps/widgets for the BUSY Bar?

I’ve seen several examples of people running custom apps on the BUSY Bar, including things like DOOM, so I’m trying to understand how custom development currently works.

I checked the official documentation, but so far I haven’t found a documented way to create and install my own apps or widgets.

Is there currently an SDK, API, JavaScript runtime, experimental firmware or development branch available for this?

I’m particularly interested in building simple widgets that can fetch external data and display it on the bar - for example cryptocurrency prices, server monitoring/status, notifications, etc.

Are the custom apps we’re seeing currently built using a private/experimental firmware, or is there already a public development method that I’ve missed?

Any links to documentation, repositories, examples, or a basic “Hello World” app would be really helpful.

How Many Busy Bars Were Affected by the Glue Residue Issue?

They said that a "small number" of early units were affected by the glue residue issue, yet I see more than a few people in here posting about theirs being one of them; mine included. A self-serve remediation was recommended but it may not solve everyone's issue. It also appears that more than a few of those affected needed (or wanted) to return their units for a replacement; mine included.

I'm curious how many of us received one of these affected units. How many of those received units were able to be restored properly and thus were kept versus sent back? If anyone who has sent their unit back has received their replacement unit. And lastly, confirmation that the replacement unit is OK as-is.

As mentioned above, my early unit was affected and after numerous attempts to clean it using the recommended methods, I ended up opening a support ticket and sent my unit back for a replacement. My replacement has not yet been shipped as of today.
