What do new grad singles do in Cambridge?

Bleak if you're not in the uni. Eventbrite only has events for the 35-50 crowd, and I don't want to use apps since they're transactional and not authentic. Where do people go to find other young people? Don't want to risk doing something at the gym, and pubs and clubs dislike guys coming in by themselves (say a news article a month ago about a club that just doesn't let in lone guys anymore). For guys 22-24 who are newly graduated and got a girlfriend, where did you meet them? I'm assuming most people met on an app or among friends, but I just moved here a month ago and don't want to use apps? All my hobbies are extremely male-dominated. Any advice?

Lost cat?

potentially lost cat in the CB4 area.

i have seen this cat 2 times in the CB4 area of Cambridge. I’ve been able to pick him up and have fed him because he is very thin. his fur on both sides is shorter than the rest of his body. is he anybodys cat? if not, next time I see him I’m going to take him to the vet. any tell signs that he may be homeless? I’m afraid to take him and disrupt his life if he’s happy.

Free GPS Treasure Hunt Around Sydney (7km) – Looking for Feedback!

Hi everyone,

I've built a free GPS treasure hunt called Governor's Challenge and I'm looking for feedback from fellow Sydneysiders.

It's a 7km self-guided walk that starts at the Art Gallery of NSW and takes you around Sydney while you solve clues and puzzles along the way.

To celebrate the launch, it's completely free to play for the next month.

I'd genuinely love to know:

  • Was the difficulty about right?
  • Were the clues fun?
  • Was the route enjoyable?
  • What would you change?

If you're looking for something different to do on a weekend (or if you're showing visitors around Sydney), I'd really appreciate any feedback.

Thanks everyone!

Work Club : D (new social group)

Hi all,

A few months ago I started a community for unemployed people / remote workers (or anyone that would like be part of a social community).

We had some success but the main issue that kind of lead to a lapse was that we were trying to meet too often / sporadically but also with the intention to work together which also was a challenge as some of us obviously weren’t working so this meant they didn’t stick around very long at the work meetings.

So I have been doing some thinking and I have proposed in the group chat (Work Club : D Discord Group Chat) that we meet once or twice a week for a couple of hours at the grain and hop store and talk about our work journeys but also have a drink or play some pool.

Being unemployed or working remotely etc can be a very isolating experience so I hope that these regular meetings will be an opportunity to connect with others and something to look forward to as a social event that makes the work week worth it (much like going for drinks after work on a Friday).

Tldr - if you want to join a social group for those job hunting / remote working join here (discord)

Looking for puppy playdates and safe evening walking routes in Cambridge

Hi everyone! We’re moving to Cambridge soon, and I’m hoping to find some new dog friends for my six-month-old Labrador puppy, Lily.
She’s a very friendly and energetic girl who loves playing with other dogs. We’d love to arrange regular playdates or walks around Jesus Green or Histon Road Recreation Ground.
Does anyone know of any Facebook or WhatsApp groups for dog owners in Cambridge that I could join? Or, if you have a friendly dog who might enjoy playing with Lily, please feel free to message me. We’d love to make some local doggy friends! 🐶🐾
I’d also appreciate recommendations for safe, well-lit, after-work dog-walking routes around Histon Road. I’m a woman and will often be walking Lily by myself. I’m a little worried about the darker evenings once winter arrives, so I’d be particularly interested to hear where other local women feel comfortable walking their dogs after dark.

Where to get an old engagement ring resized?

Hi there, now that Serena's has closed down, where is the best place to get an engagement ring resized and perhaps polished in Cambridge, ideally for a decent price?

Stabbing on mill road

This is my first time posting in a while but witnessed the aftermath of an altercation and wanted to give people a heads up. Coming back from a run with my flatmate around 8:00pm tonight and witnessed the aftermath of a stabbing outside HungRill on Mill Road. A man had been stabbed in the arm following an altercation. I heard someone yelling about crack cocaine during it, so it may have been drug-related, but I can’t confirm that.

He was bleeding heavily. Bystanders were holding his arm up and had applied a belt as a tourniquet. Three people called 999. It took roughly 15 minutes for the ambulance to arrive, which felt like a long time given there was a police car stationed right outside the Co-op just across the road.

While bystanders were tending to him and waiting for the ambulance, the two people involved in the attack came back and started threatening the people helping him. The ambulance arrived while this was happening.

Police have already been called and are aware. Posting this mainly so people know what happened and can be aware if they’re in the area. If anyone saw anything or has more info, might be worth passing it to Cambridgeshire Police.

Google Maps claims a public footpath by the boathouses. Real?

On an evening walk and Google Maps has suggested following this footpath up the left bank of the Cam between the "Lucky Rose" bridge (by the Fort St George) and the end of Trafalgar Road.

The suggested route takes one very close to Peterhouse boathouse (red dot) and meets up with Trafalgar Road very close to Magdalene boathouse.

Obviously there's no reason that the boat clubs should own the river bank itself, but I did notice that Peterhouse had a gate with a padlock across the route of the path (although the gate was open and the padlock undone).

So is this a genuine public footpath? And if so, are Peterhouse sometimes blocking it? And if so, would that be illegal? Or is Google being silly?

Followed Home, What Can I Do?

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this, it doesn’t really seem like a legal issue but also a bit serious for any other subs I could think of. This is a bit of a long shot anyways, but I figured it was worth trying.

So I believe I was recently followed home in Cambridge, once I got near to my house he asked me out and asked to kiss me when I refused. We were alone on a quiet street, he had clearly followed me, knew roughly where I was living and was much taller than me so I felt uncomfortable and unsafe. I am quite sure I was followed and not just stopped, I’ve never seen this man before, we were in a small cul de sac and the way I walked home is not a route anybody would normally take as it takes twice as long as the normal route.

I’m not sure what to do. He clearly didn’t understand how creepy this was or how to interpret social cues and had some abnormal speech patterns, so I think he is likely disabled and don’t believe he fully understood what he was doing. I don’t think the right course of action here is to report it if it could get him in trouble, but I do want somebody to explain to him how this is inappropriate though, before someone else is followed home too and made to feel unsafe, but I have no idea how I’d go about it. Would anybody know what services can help with this?

Cafe Gusto on East Road/Burleigh Street

Anyone know what happened to it?

Music shop (that had been there for years) shut and the entire interior was ripped out and refitted. Cafe Gusto moved in, closed after what seemed like less than a month for a ‘rebrand’ into some kind of a wine merchant. Opened again with no wine in sight and is again some kind of a coffee shop and cafe. They closed abruptly for a day in the middle of July saying they’d reopen the next day and then stayed closed. Now it appears they’re permanently shut and looks like furnishings and goods are being systematically removed.

This seems to be happening all over the city these days. New ‘businesses’ open up, only to stay open for like a month and then either ‘rebrand‘ or shut completely.

Part of it is no doubt the difficulty of opening and keeping a business profitable in a place like Cambridge. But something doesn’t pass the sniff test - especially when it seems like it happens often around here.

Is it money laundering? All the BBC stories about the vast supply chain that supports the boat crossings in the Channel have me probably crying wolf a decent bit.

Scammers of 'Cambridge Computers'

Posting this mainly so others can avoid wasting their money.

I took my Galaxy S21 to Cambridge Computers on Fitzroy street for a battery replacement because the original battery was losing charge very quickly.

I was told they would order an original Samsung battery, which would arrive within a couple of days. Once they said it had arrived, I returned to the shop. They took the phone and asked me to come back in an hour.

When I collected the phone, however, it immediately started overheating. I was told this was a normal reaction after a battery replacement. Within a couple of days, things got worse, the battery had swollen, would not charge beyond 65%, overheated very quickly, and the phone would die even while showing around 30% battery remaining.

Also, after replacement, I asked for my old battery back. They handed me a battery labelled EB-BG990ABY.

It looked legitimate at the first glance but there was just one problem which I discovered later in the process: EB-BG990ABY is the battery for the Galaxy S21 FE. My phone is the regular Galaxy S21, which uses EB-BG991ABY. They have different capacities and dimensions, and the S21 FE battery physically does not fit the regular S21.

So whatever battery they gave me, it was not the battery that had been removed from my phone.

I eventually took the phone to another repair shop, where the battery was properly replaced. They charged me £20 less than Cambridge Computers. According to the technician there, it appeared that Cambridge Computers had not actually replaced the battery at all, but had simply recharged the original one.

When I went back to Cambridge Computers and asked for a refund, I was told that the manager who could deal with the matter was not there (of course). Instead, a member of staff named Abdullah gave me an email address where I could file my refund request. Spolier: the given email address does not exist.

I am posting this simply as a warning to anyone looking for a phone repair service in Cambridge. Avoid Cambridge Computers unless you want to find yourself in a similar position.

Also, as a general advice, If you have dealt with fraudlent businesses in Cambridge, consider reporting it to Trading Standards. It is a shame, really, that fraudsters like Cambridge Computers can provide sh*t service so freely.

Is a Parkside Pools/Better membership worth it

I am a runner so don’t use the gym a huge amount (though I should be using it more, and this summer have thought how nice it would be to have access to a treadmill)

I also love Jesus Green Lido and a few years ago I had a student membership there and I used to go for a run, end it at JGL, have a nice shower and a dip in the pool, and it was lovely.

I no longer qualify for any of the discounts so I’m looking at £52/mo which is a fair chunk for me. I live on Maids Causeway so I’m very close to JGL and Parkside Pools and gym. I have heard some…not so good things about Parkside Pools so was just wondering if anyone goes there and enjoys it? It would be ~£40/mo just for JGL so I feel like this way I’ll get a bit more out of it, and maybe I’ll actually do some strength and conditioning!

Missing cat near Gwydir street, Cambridge Blue

It seems like our housecat Tai Tai has somehow escaped the house today. She isn't used to the outdoors (but did escape for 3 weeks in 2022 in the same area). If you are around the neighborhood please let us know is she pops up

Cambridge Meeting/Training Rooms to Hire

Can anyone recommend decent training rooms in Cambridge or it's suburbs/outskirts?

I’m looking for somewhere suitable for a one-day classroom course

Main requirements:

  • Parking on site, or easy on-street parking nearby
  • Outside the main centre/commercial zones
  • Room for up to 10 people
  • Tables/chairs, screen/projector if possible
  • Tea/coffee/lunch options would be a bonus, like an onsite café - doesn't have to be a buffet, but I'm not against putting in an order with a local caterer/sandwich shop, don't need anything fancy.

Previously used Printworks in Papworth but they're unavailable for the date that I require it on.

Hotels/conference centres don't usually work for us because they want minimum numbers for buffets/day delegate rate. Elsewhere we use sports clubs, golf clubs, business centres etc.

I’ve found a few options online, but local knowledge is usually much better than Google for this sort of thing.

Any recommendations appreciated.
