Petty theft at Tesco

Saw three lads grab some drinks open them and walk out. Security approached them and had a discussion. I overheard one of the boys say why pay if you can get it for free. To which the security guard gritted his teeth in recognition that he was powerless and that these kids were feral.
Without enforcement, rules are of no enduring value. Why is this ok in UK now?

Will anyone be out at the pubs for the World Cup tonight for England vs Mexico?

Thinking about trying to stay awake and going to a pub but I’m not sure it will be worth it if it’s dead. Will people be out? If so anywhere in particular?

Flying ants (or whatever they are)

It’s that time of the year again….

I don’t know if they are flying ants or what but I see them crawling over every part of the pavement today which means a miserable week of those things flying into my face, hair, eyes and everywhere else they can get

Ugh. Good luck everyone

Swimming in the Cam - will I really die?

Having lived in Cambridge for over 5 years, I’ve head all kind of horror stories about the water quality of the Cam.

What is your experience?

I was at the Canoe Club yesterday, and witnessed a swimming event of 150+ people happily swimming up to Granchester and back.

If the water quality is really that bad, surely these events would be band?

I suspect the swimming location is crustal? Ergo, everything around Jesus Green and further down the river = instant super AIDS (also there is loads of boat traffic) - but everything up stream might be okay?

What's Great Shelford like to live in?

We visited Great Shelford yesterday and really surprised how nice the recreation ground is with the big kids park and skate park - we have a 5 year old.

Now the new Cambridge South train station has opened we're thinking it's the perfect place to live - away from Cambridge traffic, and now a few minutes by train for my wife to get to work in Addenbrookes.

So looking for thoughts on what it's like to live there??

Is The Orchard Tea Garden open until 4pm or 5pm today?

The Orchard Tea Garden website says they’re open until 4pm. Google says that they’re open until 5pm. Anyone know which is correct?

EDIT: They don't answer the phone, otherwise I wouldn't be asking on Reddit!

EDIT EDIT: After going in person, I discovered that they're open til 5. They'll be open until 6pm starting next week, apparently. You're welcome.

Police and ambulance in a field A10/A14 junction

Drove along the A14 and saw police and ambulances in a field near A14/A10 junction. We were heading east and it was just before the junction. We drove back about 2 hours later, the police were still there along with about 20 vehicles, mostly pickup truck.

Any idea what's happened?

why are people so angry about the flags?

Genuine question, why are people so angry about people hanging up english flags for the world cup, in support of england? I’ve heard people have been tearing down the flags. I couldn’t even imagine the things that would happen if people were tearing down a different countries flag hung in their own country? i’m genuinely very confused. If someone could let me know their mindset, i’d like to be enlightened. Thank you :)

Tired of the balaclava-clad bike thieves? I’ve started an official council petition to force a debate on a PSPO targeting identity concealment.

TLDR: Link to sign: https://democracy.cambridge.gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?id=113

Hi everyone,

If you spend any time on this sub, or just walking around the city, Cambridge North, or the station cycle point, you know how rampant and brazen bike theft and anti-social behavior have become. It’s daily at this point.

One of the biggest hurdles right now is that organized groups are openly using balaclavas and snoods in mid-summer, not for warmth, but as a deliberate tactic to defeat CCTV, scout high-value bikes, and intimidate people with total anonymity. Right now, Cambridgeshire Police can only demand someone remove a face covering if a temporary, pre-authorised Section 60AA order is in place.

To fix this legal loophole, I’ve launched an official e-petition on the Cambridge City Council portal to implement a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO).

What would this PSPO actually do?
It would give authorized council officers and Cambridgeshire Constabulary the power to demand the removal of face coverings only where there are reasonable grounds to believe they are being worn to conceal identity for the purpose of causing harassment, alarm, distress, or committing crime (like cycle theft). Non-compliance carries a fine.

⚠️ Crucial Context (Before the comments section fires up):
This is not a blanket ban on masks. The proposed order explicitly and strictly exempts face coverings worn for:
Health or medical reasons (e.g., Covid/surgical masks)
Religious or cultural reasons
Weather/warmth (during winter months)

This isn't an untested idea, either. Exactly this measure was approved by Stafford Borough Council last month, Hammersmith & Fulham in February, and Wolverhampton in 2024 (where city centre crime dropped 16% and robberies halved in the year following).
How you can help:

If we get 500 signatures, the City Council is legally required to launch a formal debate on the issue and consult with the police.

If you live, work, or study within the Cambridge city boundary, you are eligible to sign.

Link to sign: https://democracy.cambridge.gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?id=113

Note: Because it’s an official local government portal and not Change.org, you do have to register a quick account with the council site to sign. It takes about 60 seconds, but it’s the only way to make the vote legally count toward forcing the debate.
Let's actually force the council to address this instead of just watching the crime stats climb. Thanks for reading!

Moving house - cleaner recommendations

We’re due to be moving house at the end of the month but due to having 2x small children and full time jobs it’s going to be difficult getting it nice and clean for the new owners. We’re hiring a removal firm and I’d like to also hire a cleaner or company to come do a deep clean similar to an end of tenancy clean.

Does anyone have any recommendations for either an individual or company in Cambridge that offers these cleaning services?
