World’s wealthiest man spends big to repeal Alaska’s voting system

One of Alaska's main news outlets is reporting that Musk has given $1.5 million to a PAC to get rid of Alaska's democratic voting system of ranked-choiced voting. For outsiders, RCV is a system of a open primary, then the top four get ranked-choiced, and in Alaska all votes are ranked-choiced including the president.

Not surprisedly, despite RCV being popular in Alaska, all the major Republicans are against it including former HOR representative candidate Kelly Tshubaka, AK Governor Mike Dunleavy, US Senator Dan Sullivan and former Governor Sarah Palin.

To Alaskans here, vote No on 2.

Eurostar cancels many London-Amsterdam trains after Rotterdam rail fire

Eurostar cancels many London-Amsterdam trains after Rotterdam rail fire

Eurostar has canceled multiple London–Amsterdam services after a fire in a cable duct near Rotterdam Stadion caused a major power failure that shut down rail traffic south of Rotterdam. Power is expected to return on Thursday, with full restoration and testing to follow.

"We’re very sorry that, due to a fire near station Rotterdam Centraal, train services across the Netherlands are currently severely disrupted and extremely limited. As a result, our trains are subject to significant delays and cancellations, and we’re unfortunately unable to offer alternative travel options," Eurostar stated on its website.

The disruption began Monday when a fire broke out in a cable duct near Rotterdam Stadion. It triggered a power outage across key rail infrastructure in the Rotterdam area. The outage disabled signaling and switch systems between Rotterdam Centraal and destinations including Dordrecht and Breda. Rail traffic toward the Kijfhoek freight yard was also halted.

NS said the fire was likely caused by overheating in the cable duct. The operator initially expected repairs to take only through the day. ProRail later extended the timeline, with power restoration now expected on Thursday, July 2, at about 6:15 p.m.

ProRail reported extensive damage in the affected section. About 299 cables run through the cable duct. Around 100 cables must be repaired individually. The work includes sorting, welding, and testing each cable. A 20-meter stretch of infrastructure was heavily damaged. Five trains were briefly stranded in the affected zone before being cleared.

Replacement transport has been deployed. NS is running limited bus services between Rotterdam and Dordrecht and between Rotterdam and Zwijndrecht. Travelers heading to Breda are being advised to reroute via Utrecht or use replacement buses before continuing their journey.

Rotterdam Centraal saw large passenger crowds on Monday as cancellations spread across the network. Eurostar has advised passengers not to travel to or from the Netherlands until services are restored and stable.

Nestle launches probe over ties to sanctioned Russian propaganda channel - City AM

Nestle launches probe over ties to sanctioned Russian propaganda channel

Nestle has launched an internal investigation after it advertised its products on a sanctioned Georgian TV channel with ties to the Russian state, City A.M. can reveal.

The world’s largest food and drink maker maintained a commercial relationship with Georgian media company Imedi TV after it was sanctioned by the UK government in February and identified as a partisan Kremlin mouthpiece.

The Georgian channel, founded in 2003 by tycoon Badri Patarkatsishvili, is listed on the official UK sanctions list and described as spreading “deliberately misleading information concerning Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.”

Imedi TV “provides support for or promotes a policy or action which destabilises Ukraine or undermines or threatens the territorial integrity, sovereignty or independence of Ukraine,” the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said.

“In particular, it regularly disseminates content that the Ukrainian Government and President Zelensky are illegitimate, Ukraine is a ‘puppet’ of the West, Ukraine is a corrupt country and that Ukraine and the West are seeking to destabilise Georgia.”

Campaign group Transparency International in March identified Nestle as among a group of western companies that had maintained ties to the channel despite it being placed on the sanctions list. It is understood Nestle continued to advertise brands including Nescafe, Nescafe Gold and Nesquik using Imedi.

City AM understands the Nestle investigation is being led by the company’s global head of legal Leanne Geale with input from Mark Maurice Jones in the London legal team.

BBC cut ties with Imedi

Some global brands with ties to Imedi TV immediately severed their connections, including the BBC, which licensed Strictly Come Dancing to Imedi TV but cancelled the deal the following day.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development office, which oversees the sanctions regime, declined to comment.

Any previous breach of sanctions will strike an embarrassing blow to Nestle, which faced criticism from Ukrainian president Volodomyr Zelensky in 2022 for maintaining its business ties to Russia. The company had failed to live up to its ‘good food, good life’ slogan, he said at the time. It halted production and sales of most of its goods in the country later that year.

A Nestle spokesperson said: “We want to reassure you that Nestlé complies with all applicable laws and international sanctions, and this includes our activities in Georgia.”

Visitors from the Republic of Ireland continue to drive NI tourism

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c30215jm9nno

A recovery in tourism spending in Northern Ireland in 2025 was driven by holidaymakers from the Republic of Ireland, official data has suggested.

There were an estimated 5.1m overnight trips with associated spending of £1.2bn, up by 9% on 2024.

Overnight trips from the Republic were up by 15% from 1.1m to 1.3m.

Spending by those visitors was up by 31% from £243m to £317m.

An increase in tourists from the Republic has been the most prominent feature of Northern Ireland's post-pandemic tourism bounce back.

Several factors are likely to have contributed to that trend, including changing consumer behaviour during the pandemic.

Travel restrictions meant people could not travel internationally and so were more likely to explore destinations closer to home.

That led to an initial bump in visitor numbers, which has been sustained.

'Promising growth'

Northern Ireland may also be viewed as offering better value for money than the Republic for short breaks and there has been increased marketing by Tourism NI.

The 2025 figures also suggest that spending by GB visitors and NI residents also increased after a weaker 2024.

The NI Statistics and Research Agency, which produced the figures, said: "The NI domestic tourism market has shown promising growth in 2025 after a sharp decline in 2024.

"However, despite an encouraging recovery in 2025 (12% increase in trips to 1.8m from 2024), NI overnight trips has not yet returned to the 2.1m NI resident overnight trips recorded in 2023."

The main negative in the figures was a small decline in international visitors.

London prepares for Kid’s Meal Summer - London Centric

Rachel Reeves’ decision to slash VAT on “children’s meals” this summer is opening up all manner of exciting possibilities for the capital’s restaurants. The tax guidance makes it clear that the legal definition of a “children’s meal” is essentially a meal that’s smaller than normal, cheaper than normal, and marketed as a ‘children’s meal’ on the menu. There’s nothing in the rules about it having to be ordered or eaten by a child. (The FT’s ever-wonderful Alphaville blog explains this in a bit more depth.)

All of this opens up some exciting possibilities for discount small plates dining this summer. Restaurant Kitty Fisher’s announced: “We are thrilled to announce we are going to be offering A KIDS’ MENU this summer featuring lobster, steak au poivre, oysters, offal, snails and all the other good stuff KIDS love.”

Going one step further, the Blue Stoops in Kensington announced a ‘Chancellor’s Children’s Menu,’ offering up snail salad, oysters, anchovy butter toast, and a ‘tax break tart’ for dessert.

Jamie Allsopp, the pub’s founder and a former hedge fund manager, said he’d introduced the grown-up children’s menu so that “everybody can feel the benefit of this new policy, and enjoy some of the best seasonal ingredients prepared by London’s finest chefs at a price that is fair, reasonable, and equitable.”
