Anyone here highway drive a 2014 Chevy Spark 1.2?

I daily a 2020 Spark right now and honestly I don’t really mind it on the highway even with a long commute. I actually really like the size of the car and the gas mileage lol.

My issue is I didn’t know much about CVTs when I bought it and never really researched them. I just hit 140k and I can definitely feel things starting to go wrong now 😭

I’m looking at a 2014 with under 35k miles, but I’m worried about how the smaller 1.2 engine feels compared to my 2020. Does it feel super underpowered on the highway? How is it with merging/hills/keeping speed?

Since it’s still low mileage, first thing I’d probably do is a CVT drain/fill. Anything else I should watch out for on the 2014s?

Rant

I bought a 2020 red Chevy spark last summer…the breaks failed. I bought her from a used dealership. Have been trying to chase the car since it “ran away”. I own my mistake. I just wanted to join for how others love their sparks the way I did mine. It’s not the best vehicle in winter (-15•) but I know gas prices have gone up and I am big on saving.

Bought from my grandma

Was in rough shape for the inside I call it the mold mobile because my uncle didn’t clean it for 4 years but I cleaned it myself with some help and it took 4 hours. Smell is gone and now it’s all mine 😸

She’s looked better

My oldest kid crossed “got into my first accident” off his bucket list. Traded paint with a late model Jeep Cherokee, and our Clown Car came out significantly worse for wear.

Impressively, it suffered no structural damage, and still moved under its own power, but the entire front clip, crash bar, headlight, wheel, fender, washer tank and driver door all add up. $7,200 and change. Impressively, State Farm isn’t totaling it, despite the body shop’s best efforts, quoting all new OEM parts on a 2017 car.

Tail lights, number plate light, speedometer light and first speed on front window wiper doesn’t work

I have a 2013 Chevrolet Spark that recently stood still for around 4 months. After using the car again after 4 months the following doesn’t work:

- Tail lights (braking lights work fine. Same bulb)
- Number plate light
- Speedometer light (marked with green)
- First speed on front wiper marked with INT (second and third speed work fine)

I’ve looked at all fuses and can’t see any burned ones. I tried replacing fuses that I thought would be the correct ones for the problem. But I don’t see any fuse labeled with tail lights for example.

I tried changing the tail light bulbs.

Do you know what could cause this problem? Do you know what fuse or relay is responsible for these components?

Brand new cabin air filter to install ... but.. ?

When checking it out I don't see any arrow for indication for the airflow..

Anyone have installed a Baldwin branded cabin air filter on their Chevrolet Spark ?

A rainy day in Korea

It’s been raining pretty hard for the first time in a while, so I took a short break in the back of my car.
Actually, it's not very comfortable, and the sound of the rain is quite loud.
But it still somehow felt warm and cozy.

2014 Spark LT CVT transmission service question about dealership "service" dept.

I've recently reaquired my 2014 Spark. I gave it to my nephew a couple years ago, he doesn't need it anymore, so now I'm going to give it to my mom for use as a summer car to keep up north all year so she can stop driving from the desert southwest to the Pacific Northwest every year.

Before I gave the car to my nephew, I replaced the transmission 500 miles before the warranty expired. He's put 10k miles on it, and I heard that it was a good idea to service the transmission around this point to clear out the initial shavings from a new transmission.

  1. first question: is this a good practice?

From reading in this Sub, I thought the preferred service was a drain and fill with filter replacement and magnet cleaning, but the dealership near my mom is pushing a FLUSH, and they say it doesn't come with a filter replacement because that's internal and unaccessible.

  1. second question: what's the correct procedure, drain and fill or a flush?

  2. Where is a good place to get it done? Can a place like Valvoline do it or does it need to be done by a stealership

Best place for Chevy spark parts

Hey guys. I just got into a car accident yesterday in my new baby. I know Im an idiot I know its my fault. My car is kind of damaged and Im just looking to see if anyone on here knows where I can go to buy cheaper car parts online that will come pretty quickly? Pre painted or not idk. I live in NJ. I need the front bumper cover and the fender. If not do you know if this type of issue is repairable? How much can I realistically expect to spend? Im so sad because I am really scared of driving and this is why.

2022 Spark Damage

Damage is mostly to the back passenger door, and some to the passenger door as well. Body damage and the wheel was completely bent up, anyone who knows more about cars can tell me what $$$ I might be looking at to get it repaired? The airbags didn't go off since it was a really low speed impact, and I know the back door will fully have to be replaced since it doesn't close or open anymore.

Infotainment power glitch?

Hello! I drive a 2022 Activ (automatic, 1.4L L4 engine).

This morning I took a normal drive, went into the store, and when I came back out and started my car, my infotainment center did not come on. The backup camera didn’t work. It literally was just off. When I used my blinkers, they didn’t not make a sound as I suspect the speakers were also off, too.

All other electronics worked fine. All lights were on, even the temp control dials and phone plug in lights beneath the infotainment center worked. The only thing that didn’t start with the car was the screen and speakers.

I know these aren’t top of the line equipment, so I’m wondering if this is a common glitch? I had to go into work and didn’t have time to mess with it too much. I’m hoping after letting it sit for a few hours, it will come on. Any tips to troubleshoot, or have you experienced any similar quirks with your systems and speakers?

Thanks!

Transmission shoring change after update

I don’t know if I should post this on the onstar subreddit or the Chevy one but - onstar pushed an update last night and now my cars cvt shifting has dramatically changed. i think now the lower gear stays lower for longer. I’m struggling to explain this, but it’s like I need more gas to shift it to a higher gear??? anyone else know experienced this before? can I revert it?

My poor Sparky :(

I got hit by someone without insurance (I was not at fault).

I was quoted about $2300 just from the visible damage, but the axle is definitely effed up and the body shop said there may be frame damage as well.

I fear he may be totaled :(

ETA: I was also told that when the shop tried to order a replacement door, they found out it has been discontinued.

“New” spark owner requests advice

I just bought a 2021 spark with about 6500 miles on it. My last car had 250k miles on it when it stopped going. I’d like to try to beat that record if possible. What maintenance, warning signs, or upgrades are required to make sure I can pull it off?

I joined the club and did a few upgrades...

Hey there. My son smacked a deer with my Ford Fusion, and the insurance payout was used to buy Betty here outright. 32k miles, one owner, rebrand title. Previous owner had all maintenance tracked through carfax, so that's pretty handy. I proceeded to do a few quality-of-life upgrades since my previous car was a little more, shall we say, cushy.

First thing was replace the front door speakers with kenwood 300's; I purchased four (about $80 including harnesses and brackets) but my trim only had them in the front doors. I plan to wire the back doors in, install the speakers, and replace the pillar tweeters shortly. Not looking for a whole loud setup, just want to hear my music over the sound of the road!

Second thing was to install a larger armrest/storage box, not pictured. I got this on aliexpress for about $40 and it just installed into the cupholder between the seats. the original armrest was removed to allow the new one to fit. this was a huge impact for just a few bucks and totally worth it. I will admit the quality of the armrest itself is not the greatest, i will be on the lookout for a better version or perhaps find a friend with a 3d printer and get one made properly. also with this upgrade, i added two self-adhesive cushions ($3 for both) to the front door armrests. those suckers were painful!

Third was to add cruise control! I'm a cruise baby, and driving lots of highway miles means this car could get a nice bump in fuel economy with cruise. i bought a rostra kit and installed it myself. pretty easy, only 1 wire needed to be spliced and soldered (ignition wire) and the rest was installed with pass-through harnesses. the price was a little higher than i expected (around $300) but well worth it. i have already seen an increase in fuel economy! we were getting 38 mpg before the install, and after a week of driving have already seen it climb to 39.5 mpg. SIPPAH!

While I was deep in her guts workin on her cruise control, Betty showed me a surprise... Turns out she had a Viper keyless entry/alarm and remote start upgrade that the car dealer didn't know about... a quick search got me tech support, who found the model number for the needed replacement remote. (when we got the car from the dealer they only handed us one basic laser-cut key. it didn't come with a remote fob nor did the key have a chip. this should have been an indicator that there was some sort of chip bypass, most commonly seen with remote start systems. now you know) For $30 i got the replacement remote and reprogrammed it in about 5 seconds.

Lastly I installed the sunglasses storage box. found a comment on a post with a linked image showing this mod with a kia sedona sunglasses box. i imagine this would work with a wide range of headliner-installed storage boxes across all makes and models, should one be willing to take the time to measure search around... this modification was pretty straightforward and only cost $14 after shipping costs for a used kia sedona box. measure three or four times, make a handy template out of stiff cardboard or plastic to cut and test the fit with the box before you mark and cut the headliner! (i did the old texture rubbing trick: paper over the back of the box, rubbed gently with the side of a pencil or crayon. it leaves the outline on the paper for you to cut out and transfer to your stiffer cardboard or plastic template material. trace and cut your template, trim and test fit with storage box, tape and align to headliner, outline template with thin sharpie or felt pen, then cut with SHARP utility knife. i didn't need to trim, the box just popped into the headliner and looks like it was meant to be there.

For around $470 i managed to make this little economy death trap feel like (almost) a real car! I do plan on doing the trans drain and fill very soon, don't worry, and i'm driving it like the go-kart that it is, not trying to drive Fast and Furious. so far i love it and i'm glad i took the time to try a few mods, who knows what i'll find to do next!
