Can’t afford my dream costume design program- how to pave my way into the industry?

Hi all!

I was recently accepted into DePaul University’s costume design BFA program. I was ecstatic. However, I’d have to take out over $20k in private loans to be able to afford the school since I don’t receive any financial assistance from my family. I’m absolutely crushed- this was my dream. I will be attending a more affordable state school and studying a different subject.

I recently bought my own sewing machine and beginner supplies, and I am learning the basics of that. I really would love to still be able to pave my way into the industry, even if it is more difficult since I won’t get the connections that DePaul could have given me. I understand that it is hard to have a stable income in this industry, and I am planning on making it more of a side thing while I’m in college (if that’s possible).

My question is: how should I start? Should I immediately volunteer with local theaters, or should I develop my sewing skills some more and then try to involve myself more? Any other tips?

Thank you in advance!

How can I turn this bodysuit into a Godzilla costume? I want to add spikes down the back, how would you do that? I need some advice and making it look really good.

Godzilla..?

My boyfriend and I are going to be King Kong Vs Godzilla for Halloween and I am going to be Godzilla. I want to be a sexy version but honestly I don’t really know where to even start. I tried to create some looks but using ChatGPT is hard because it shows me some insane looks that I’m not sure I can even recreate. Does anyone have any advice? Or even want to help me create something? If anyone is willing I can pay maybe. I just want to have a really cute costume. I attached an idea ChatGPT and I came up with.

Help me figuring out how to make Spinner Rack costume

(UPDATE! I think I'm gonna use some fabric strip hat racks to mount comic bags with Velcro, and keep the strips in place with elastic bands.)

I want to dress as a comic spinner rack for Halloween, since LA Comic Con will be on Halloween. I'm not sure how to go about doing it. I know that I can make a hat that's the signs at the top of it. I don't want to wear a bunch of cumbersome wires and stuff, however I need to get the point across about that being what I am. Maybe somehow display fake comics on my arms, torso, and thighs? I don't know how to sew, but I'm okay at doing EVA foam. Any help would be great. Here's some pictures of spinner racks, in case you're not familiar with what I'm talking about.

How best to start out this costume and how best to get the materials?

So i'm trying to make a green arrow costume for LA comic con. I've never made anything like this before and i'm hopeful I didn't pick too complex of a costume design. I think my local library has a sewing machine so I can hopefully make the top tunic and undershirt. A big question I have though is how do I get started in designing the top, what is the most efficent process from design to sewing that I should do, what kind of cloth should I get for the overshirt? The next biggest question are the boots, there's no way I'll get calf high boots in green, but I'm fine getting leather ones or the red ones like in the last photo. Is there a company or website that people have found to be good for boots like this? Thanks in advance!

Tell us about your costuming journey

Hi all,

I've noticed few members of long standing post infrequently so this question hopefully draws everyone out.

What is your story?

How did you start, why did you stay?

Are you an amateur or professional costumer?

Some of my work is in this costume. I started sewing at 8 and was helping in a local community theater at 12.

Designed my first show at 17, worked professionally from then on. Took every job I could get. Wardrobe, stitcher, worked my way up. Later in life I earned an MFA from a music school and designed opera costumes.

Was so burnt out I quit the industry two years later.

searching for fabric

i’m looking to recreate the short dress on the left from this scene in the tim burton alice in wonderland movie for halloween and had a feeling i would have a hard time sourcing fabric so i started early. the feeling was unfortunately right, im really struggling to find something that has the right color, stripes, and texture so i was wondering if anybody here might be able to help me. i’m flexible on color, it’s quite grey in the pictures but im ok with it being more blue just so it’s recognizably alice given that she only wears the dress for maybe one minute of the movie. i would prefer a natural fiber, silk or cotton is best, but polyester is ok if that’s all that’s really available. thanks in advance for the help!

How reasonable is it to try and make a fairly detailed cloak for a first time crafting/cosplay project?

Recently I began my first cosplay/crafting project and so far it has been going exceedingly well; I needed to throw away my first 3 attempts, but that's all part of learning!

What i am trying to recreate is the armor and outfit of Needle Knight Leda, from Elden ring. The armor and filigree I have mostly sorted and will just be a TON of 3D printing. However, there is one element I'm still not sure of; how the hell do I do the cloth elements?

I have zero experience in sewing and cloth making, and as such don't even know if it's a dumb, or smart idea to do this myself.

My assumptions on the process are;

  1. Find a big piece of cloth of the right texture, and find a pattern for the kind of clothing you look for.
  2. cut out the pattern with specialty scissors.
  3. For the fine gold details, cloth filigree is available online and can be stitched on.

Are these broad strokes okay, or am I really missing the mark? Please do be critical, as I really want to refine this process before I begin making any purchases. Is this possible? Or, would it perhaps be better/cheaper to comission this from someone more experienced?

Included are references of the outfit I'm going for.

How do I top my guy fieri fairy costume?

Hi, I never post on Reddit, but I was hoping to get some opinions and ideas. I strongly believe that Halloween costumes are a good insight into who you are. I love Halloween, I always try to put a lot of thought into my costume.

Here are my credentials:
McLovin from Superbad
The dad from Twilight
Reverse cowgirl (I wore a cowgirl costume backwards)
Chicken Joe from Surf’s Up
SpongeBob at the end of the SpongeBob Movie with his guitar
Handsome Squidward
Guy Fieri Fairy

The Guy Fieri Fairy was by far my favorite. Im trying to chase the high I had that night, I accidentally entered a costume contest and told the audience the carpet matches the drapes. Everyone immediately knew who I was, people were laughing, asking for pictures, and committing to the bit. (I don’t know that girl in that picture, but I’m pretty sure when wanted to make out with me) and I ended the night by making out with a guy that had a real mustache.

I wanna do my best to recreate that vibe this year. I want something funny, clever, recognizable at first glance, and with enough personality that I can stay in character all night. I’ll probably find a way to make it slightly sexy because I think that just makes stupid costumes even funnier.

Some ideas I’ve had:
Sexy Megamind
Magician who does terrible magic tricks all night
Sexy Perry the Platypus
Sexy Plankton
Miss Piggy (with an absurd breast plate)
Basketball or another inanimate object
Chicken Little
Jimmy Neutron
Guy selling hotdog at baseball game
Man Ray
Gru
Vector
The Lorax
Dr. Seuss
The applause sign guy from Shrek
Thomas the Tank Engine
Gary the Snail in the library
Lord Farquaad

My problem is that a lot of these feel like costumes, not full concepts. I want something unique where I can completely commit to a bit all night. What ideas am I missing? Is there something I can add to
Make these costumes a full concept or more recognizable? PLEASE HELP

Edit:
Thank you everyone for your kind words. I’ve been so exited to check my phone all day. I would like everyone to know that I did in fact, not win my work costume contest, because I had ops at work. I have no clue if I won the other costume contest tho, just entered and left.

I’m so grateful to everybody giving ideas, this makes me so excited. I hope it helps inspire other peoples costumes.

Here are some other ideas that I had:
Edward from twilight (I bedazzle my face and cover my skin with glitter, wearing this is the skin of a killer, Bella shirt)—-I wouldn’t be able to wear this to work because of glitter
Peanut butter baby
The apparently kid
Sexy Ronald McDonald
The French nail manicure nurse from spy kids
The fishing rod leg toy from Toy Story
2319 monster from monsters Inc.
A rat and I could give people the plague
Sherlock gnomes
SpongeBob Marley
Willy wonka folka flame (this two feel inappropriate, im white, but I will leave here for someone else)
Elvis parsley
Buzz Lightyear being Mrs. Nesbitt
Ronald McDonald Trump… I live in the south though

I am planning on being Rodrick Heffley at some point this year because I was supposed to be him last year

I also have some duo costumes or couples costumes, but I don’t have someone that would commit to the bit as much as I would. If anybody’s interested in that list, let me know.

I will update more as I go: so far I’m feeling she hulk hogan and sexy megamind the most, not completely sold on them yet tho.

Metal trim?

does anyone know where I can find this metal mesh trim? the strip is crochet edged and rhinestoned on top. i want to replicate for a friend- she actually has one of these from the woman in the photo so I’ve seen the construction. the metal chain part is like the metal mesh purses are made of. I see it in yardage at mood but curious if it’s available in strips? thanks!

suggestions for field

hello! wondering what seasoned costumers suggest of what specific field in costuming to pursue. i just finished high school and am debating joining the costuming madness lol

tv/movie/theater/theme parks/musicians/fashion design / other

and i've been seeing a lot of "just volunteer at your local small theater" and i mean like a sustainable job.

thanks and much appreciated!

Costume advice

Hi! If you’re a big DC fan I’d really love your help!!

I’ve decided that I’d like to dress up as Dick Grayson’s Robin for Halloween, keeping the initial design, while still making it something I’d feel confident and comfortable in. (i.e- he doesn’t wear pants so I was gonna wear shorts)

My issue is deciding on the color of gloves and color / design of costume’s shoes. I am buying things like the gloves, cape, shorts, fabric paint and fabric, but im hoping to not have buy shoes as I’ll probably only use them for this occasion. My three choices of shoes are black sneakers, green / black Maryjane or brown boots, (which none really fit the actual design, i know that, please don’t come at me🥲) for the gloves,I was wondering if i should go with green lengthy gloves or fingerless leather gloves ??
please give me advice 🙏🙏

Quest for bespoke vision with an NYC based artisan / designer

I’m hoping for help to find an artisan who can work with me to create a custom item, preferably in the NYC area but not necessary. For years I have been haunted by the vision of a purse that looks exactly like a trumpet flower but with two large copper rings as handles. I have wanted to learn to sew but am not skilled and would love to work with someone who has experience with special fabrics and structural design elements (as well as skilled craftsmanship). I don’t even know if this is possible but am looking to be pointed in a direction if anyone knows where to start with something like this! Maybe a costume designer? Thank you so much 💗

Jocelyn Herbert

Hello everyone, I am not a student of costume design however I am trying to recreate one of Jocelyn Herbert's masks as a personal project (I am a classics student!). Does anyone have any idea how to incorporate rope/string into a clay mask or would it be better to do paper-mache? Any advice is welcome!
