Centenary Edition David Attenborough Signed!

What's the rarest thing I have in my collection?

well it has to be this. I bought these on november 25th for £50ish and got them a few days later. On December 1st I sent off all of them through the mail to sir david with each letter explaining what I love so much about each book. (I nearly sprained my wrist and had to stop for a week of writing because I wrote that much lol) on December 14-15th I got all of them back signed seperately and that was the last time I ever sent an item to him theough the mail!

Thanks again David, I'll cherish these for as long as I live!

Sir David Attenborough Signed Zoo Quest Set

Hello, so I got all of these signed a long time ago by Sir David Attenborough and was wondering the worth of all together. They're all lutterworth press 1st edition 1st impression and have protective book covers for the dust jackets I've had on them for I think 15 years now?

Thanks in advanced!

Happy collecting💖

As David Attenborough reaches 100, it makes you think… how many TV legends make it to a century without controversy and are still adored by the people who grew up with them?

On his 100th birthday today, communities across the UK are planting trees, nature groups are hosting special wildlife walks, and broadcasters are replaying his greatest documentaries. With so much happening in his honour, it raises a rare question: how many other television icons have lived to 100, kept their legacy spotless, and are still celebrated by the people whose lives they shaped?

Did anyone else find the David Attenborough BBC Birthday disappointing?

For those who watched the BBC celebration of Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday, what did you find disappointing by the presentation?

(For those who missed it you can see on BBC IPlayer.)

I found a number of things which were disappointing or just not a good presentation. Overall it seemed like it was thrown together at the last minute, which is ridiculous given the time they had to prepare.

  1. Lack of children. Other than one short video segment of a handful of preselected children, all the talk of of future generations fell very flat when children were not present, nor included, and the late hour. For example, my daughter’s school had a special assembly to send a birthday wish video to Sir Attenborough. Why didn’t they the BBC include a collage of schools from around the UK or the world? Very much a missed opportunity and poorly done by the BBC.

  2. Presenter was pleasant but boring. Her cadence of speech seemed off putting and unprepared. Very awkward at times. It would have been better to have a couple hosts who could move the show along better.

  3. Too celebrity focused. Sir Attenborough is the epitome of humble anti-fame celebrity, so why was BBC over emphasising celebrities in on stage guests and video birthday wishes. They should have celebrated the common person, and include a video of many people all around the UK and world wishing him a happy birthday. Instead it came off as elitism junk. Why the heck is Camila Cabello in a clip? Or why zoom in on Benedict Cumberbatch in the audience? Very poorly done and again a missed opportunity to celebrate all of humanity, which is what Sir Attenborough preaches himself.

Many more peeves to state but open up to others to discuss.

Goldfish In Distress

Here's one of my favourite Attenborough-adjacent stories to celebrate his 100th birthday and magnificent career. "Goldfish In Distress", a 1978 episode of Wildlife on One, contains a somewhat spurious and utterly hilarious sound-effect...

Keith Rodgerson: In 1981, whilst working for the BBC film unit, I went into the office one day to find our boss with a goldfish bowl and a book on his desk. "Maurice Tibbles has made a film about goldfish, and in this book it says that they can make a vocalisation when they are distressed. See if you can record it? There's a good chap" he said. So off I went with the goldfish to our crew room. popped a mic in the bowl, put on my headphones and heard nothing but the noise of the room. wasn't surprised but when I realised that the film editor of the show was a friend of mine, David Aliband, decided to play a little prank on him. I took the bowl and my recorder into an empty radio studio and started recording. "I'm going to put the mic into the bowl now" I said into the mic. Splash! Silence! Splash! Silence! "That didn't work. Let's see what happens if prod the fish with a pencil". Squeek....squeek! "Gosh it works. Let me do some more to give you enough to edit!" Having done the recording I took the tape down to the cutting room but David wasn't there so left it on his desk. I expected a call to say wasn't born yesterday, and besides, I'm sure a goldfish wouldn't have a Scottish accent!" That didn't happen, however. Instead, the following day I found a letter in my pigeon hole (remember them?) from the then head of the Natural History Unit congratulating me on the wonderful recording which "will make the opening sequence much better". What to do? Nothing! was my decision and so when the film was transmitted, my Scottish squeeking took pride of place. said nothing about this for several years until a friend in London rang me to tell me that, not only had the recording been put on a BBC effects disc but it had just been used in a natural history quiz on Radio 4. Years later plucked up courage and related the tale to David Attenborough overa bottle of wine in the Serengeti. He chortled!! Lovely man
