Recommendations for a deaf dog; cross posting

Hello everyone; I think tl;dr needs to be at the start.

Basically my dog is deaf and I’m looking for something that gives haptic feedback to get her attention. Basically I want a shock collar without it causing harm to her. The haptic feedback from the Apple Watch is what I’m thinking, it’s gentle and it wakes me up without feeling panicked.

I have 3 Shih Tzu mix dogs, the male is an actual Shih Tzu, the other two are female and they have that hairlike texture instead of fur.

I live in Houston and my ex found her abandoned after we had our 2021 freeze and I just COULDN’T say no when my ex asked if I wanted her. So I honestly don’t know if she’s real old, or she just had a rough life on the street.

My mom is my dog sitter when I work, and in the past few months we found out she’s deaf. We’ve both gotten to my home on separate occasions and have both yelled at her (she wasn’t running to meet us and get a treat) and we assumed the worst.

Then I noticed that she’s not afraid of thunder, fireworks, gunshots from my video games and realized she’s deaf lmao.

Anyway, I just want to be able to let her loose at a dog park and be able to get her attention. I recently moved to a new apartment with a yard just so she can have freedom to roam outside while I’m inside playing video games.

Thanks in advance.

Can I train a deaf dog to be my ADA animal?Do deaf dogs travel well?

There is a deaf dog up for adoption at a local shelter and I keep going back to the listing over and over. I'm very drawn to her but we do travel at least one week of the month, always by car. I wouldn't want to leave her alone and would only consider adopting her if I could train her to be my legitimate ADA animal, NOT an emotional support animal. I am diabetic and experience frequent unanticipated lows. I have a CGM and you can buy a separate CGM reader that I was thinking I could have her carry along with my insulin and low glucose supplies and train her to come to me when it vibrates. I checked the ADA website and that would make her an ADA dog and I would be able to bring her everywhere with me. She already knows some sign language and I would continue that training of course.

Is my thinking logical? I know all animals have different personalities and I'd have to meet her to assess whether she has the right temperament to be a support animal but I have no idea whether deaf dogs travel as well as hearing dogs or if they are better off being in a stable home without road trips. Any insight would be appreciated, she has been returned to the shelter three times now so if I take her there's no way I'd ever return her

Today, my boy lost his tiny eye

My dog was born with an underdeveloped eye. It always moved in unison with the other eye, was the same color etc. It was just..small.

In the past 5 months ive watched the little eye go from bright blue to having a giant red splotch. Then it shifted to a murky green color, plus cloudy and still with what looked like a blood blister inside.

Yesterday I took him to 1 of 2 dog oftomologists in my country. Within 2 minutes she told me it needed to come out and it could be done thay same day. I was in utter shock. Unfortunately I had fed him that morning which disqualified him from anesthesia. So we scheduled it for this morning. The eye has been successfully removed and hes recovering now.

But wow what a crazy 2 days its been. I was completely blindsided. I always knew it may eventually need removal, but not a single vet we've seen throughout the past 6 years never seemed concerned for it. The eye turned quickly.

I just wanted to come on here and make a PSA to really protect those eyes. These double merle/albino eyes dont have pigment, so they cannot protect themselves from UV rays. My dogs eye essentially was atrofying. We lived in mainland florida for many years, then key west for another 4, and now we are in coastal central america. Since the eye never worked, he never really protected it much from the sun. If I could give any advice, it would be to start training your light eyed dogs to wear sun protection.

Any and all healing thoughts and vibes are welcome for my boy Chucho

Looking for some advice from anyone who has experience with deaf dogs, especially Frenchies. She’s a rescue & 3yrs old.

Looking for some advice from anyone who has experience with deaf dogs, especially Frenchies.
I rescued a 3-year-old deaf Frenchie about two weeks ago, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to communicate with and train her. Would you recommend teaching her hand signals for commands like sit, stay, come, potty, etc.? If so, are there certain signals or training methods that have worked especially well for you?
I’d also really appreciate any general tips for helping a deaf rescue adjust, getting her attention without startling her, and keeping her safe.
She’s still settling in, so I want to make sure I’m setting her up for success. 🐾❤️

Whyyyy the morning whining?

Everyone say hello to Penelope! She’s our 12 week old (double Merle) Great Dane & is completely deaf. She’s super smart & doing great with training. But girlfriend is up every single morning ready to party at 6:30. She never sleeps in, even if we do a little “dream pee” around midnight. But once she’s up, all she does is whine & bark for the first hour or so that she’s up. We get up, we go outside, I feed her, she has water but all the while she’s running under my feet screaming at me. What gives? We use our “shhh” & “no speak” sign & she dgaf lol help!

Frustration with “general” dog tips and information

Hello. I am new to this group and own a 3 year old, deaf continental bulldog rescue. He is incredibly well behaved and sweet. Sometimes I worry about his and our ability to communicate due to his inability to hear verbal cues and noise. Therefore, I always work with him on visual motions. However, it’s not always full proof (specifically “drop it” or when he needs to go out) Often, when I look up or read about things such as communication, behavior, and handling, the articles or tips are geared toward hearing dogs with notes such as “be sure to use buzz words for this” or “your dog will hear the register of your voice and know what tone you’re using”. And yes, I typically put “deaf” when I’m searching, (for example I looked up “little stomps” and “head tilting”, as these are things he does but not frequently) But the first results usually never account for things such as curiosity or sights, and instead will jump to things such as illness, discomfort, or upset. It’s only once I get very specific that I can start finding shreds of information that is useful. I’m curious if anyone here has any suggestions or sources they like to rely on for those of us trying to learn more about our disabled pets.
