[Megathread] Around the World in 80 Glazes | Week 1

🍩 Welcome to our first r/donuts Wednesday Megathread! 🍩

Every Wednesday, we are taking a trip around the world to feature a random, iconic, or unique donut shop. Whether it’s a 70-year-old neighborhood staple or a modern novelty shop, we want to highlight the shops putting incredible fried dough on the map! This will be a weekly thing from here out, and we encourage you to submit your local favorite donut shop you think we should highlight! We are NOT compensated or paid to feature these shops!

Featured Shop: Voodoo Doughnut

Location: Flagship in Portland, Oregon, USA (with locations now in CO, TX, CA, IL, and more)

The Vibe: Cash-only, eccentric, and heavily tied to the local music and art scene. Open 24/7, the flagship store is treated like a tourist landmark where people line up at all hours under a neon sign.

The Claim to Fame: Founded in 2003, Voodoo is widely credited with starting the "wacky toppings" craze of the 21st century. They were among the very first to experiment with putting breakfast cereals, bacon, peanut butter, and even crushed candies on yeast and cake donuts.

The Signature Order: The Bacon Maple Bar & The Voodoo Doll

While they have over 40 flavors, they are world-famous for two distinct creations:

The Bacon Maple Bar: A raised yeast doughnut bar topped with maple frosting and literal strips of savory, crispy bacon.

The Voodoo Doll: A yeast donut shaped like a voodoo doll, filled with raspberry jelly (to look like blood when you bite it), topped with chocolate frosting, and stabbed with a pretzel stake.

Link: https://www.voodoodoughnut.com/

Since this is a Megathread, we want to hear from you!

The Gourmet vs. Novelty Debate: Do you love the wild, over-the-top toppings (like Cap'n Crunch or bacon) that Voodoo popularized, or do you prefer a classic, perfectly executed glaze/old-fashioned?

Have you been there? If you’ve been to the original Portland location or any of their expansion shops, what did you order? Is it a must visit or a tourist trap? Is it worth the hype and notoriety?

Drop your photos: Have you ever snapped a picture of one of their iconic pink boxes or a crazy donut combination? Share your photos in the comments below!

Sugared Braided Donuts

Although they may not look like it, braided donuts are soft and fluffy. To make a braided donut, roll out the dough and form a double braid. Once formed, moisten the ends of the braid slightly and join them, pressing them together gently with your fingers.

One of the newest shops in Toronto that recently opened their doors back in Oct 2025. Located on St. Clair Ave, the shop has a clean modern look along a vibrant interior.

Donuts were incredible! The fillings were all super amazing, and not over the top. Flavours were spot on, and they all tasted exactly as they should.

Does a chocolate glazed donut with Boston cream filling exist?

I want the traditional chocolate glazed donut but with Boston cream filling. I've tried looking it up and I only find chocolate frosted Boston cream donuts. It seems like no one in the world has made one.

Donuts from my local supermarket in Saltillo, Mexico

These donuts are actually one of my favorites ever. They use high quality ingredients, the donuts are great in taste, they have a pillowy texture, they're not greasy, they have a lot of variety and they even sell mini donuts. The best part is actually the price, they cost half the price or even less than most of the big chains and some are even better in general. In the last picture I show my selection for the day that is nutella with nuts, semisweet chocolate and maple glazed

Announcement: r/donuts has a new mod. Plans for this sub.

Hello everyone,

Sorry for the late announcement. I’m the new mod for this sub! Thanks for your support on my last post. Means a lot. I’m typing this as I go. This is my first time being a moderator for a sub so please bear(claw) with me. Haha terrible pun. Anyway one of the reasons why I wanted to become a moderator in the first place was because I’m tired seeing these AI generated pictures being posted on here from bot accounts. They’re ruining the good name of donuts damn it! So we’ll be making sure none of that crap is being posted here. One way would be ”enforcing” post flair use and it has to meet the requirements for the post. (Ex: Shop-made. Store’s name and location). Just a heads up, I’ll be adding new rules as I go. Nothing crazy. Just to prevent AI shit from being post here.

From my understanding it looks like there was one mod for this sub. That was dumb. Even though this sub has 10k subs, it’s pretty active from what I’ve seen. I don’t want a repeat so I’ll be looking for moderators. Looking for 4 mods. I already have two in mind. For the other 2, looking for one mod that has somewhat experience in moderating. The other mod the same or no experience in moderating but wants to learn. Just shoot me a dm in the mod mail. 5 mods (including me) should be sufficient for the time being.

I’ll be adding new post flairs and user flairs soon. I think that would help us be more engaging and fun on this sub. Please if you have any ideas or concerns, lmk. Thanks again guys!

I don't like spam with my donuts!

Aloha r/donuts!

I am one of the new moderators for the r/donuts community! I am honored to have been selected to serve this delicious community!

About me

I am an experienced moderator from over at r/burgers, but don't let that fool you because I LOVE donuts (Luther burger, anyone?). Anyway, I am from Kansas City, the BBQ capital of the world! I have also traveled and lived in various places around the world experiencing their culture, foods, and delicacies so food is my passion. I love cooking and eating new foods, and am not afraid to try anything twice! The best donut I ever had was a blueberry cake donut from a local place here in KC that had whole blueberries cooked into it! My go-to donut is the classic strawberry frosted with sprinkles!

Changes

So now that you know a bit about me, let's get the knitty-gritty. The state of the community. The r/donuts community was left minimally moderated for months now leaving it in bad shape. Bots, spam, AI, harassment, and so on were rampant here. Thankfully, we have a new lead moderator who cares about this community. They are in the process of onboarding some new mods, to help get this community back on track.

Over the next few days, y'all might see some new changes happening here. We will be adding and updating the rules of the community to better align with what the community wants and needs. Please feel free to comment here what kind of rules you would like to see implemented here. Our goal as moderators isn't to be dictators, but to enforce the rules of the community. If you like a rule someone suggests, please upvote it for visibility!

We are currently rooting through months worth of mod mail and notifications. It's a mess. So, to make it easier on us, we will be purging the logs. This means that posts and comments may be removed. It may or may not have broken community rules, but they will be removed anyway for ease. No bans or warnings will be given for any post, comment, or person at this moment unless it is a completely egregious offence. Going forward, this will not be the case. All reports and mod mail **WILL** be reviewed. Bans, suspension, and warnings **WILL** happen going forward.

AI and Bots

All clankers and AI content is here forth **BANNED** from r/donuts. We do not want your AI slop tainting the beautiful world of donuts. We will be adding AI detection shortly to assist us in spotting these clankers and AI slop but it's not perfect. If you spot any potential AI slop or a clanker, **REPORT IT!**. The moderation team will handle it from there. Knowingly posting AI generated content will be handled accordingly.

Be Civil

Don't be a jerk, y'all. Simple as that. Please refrain from insulting others, their tastes, or their preferences for donuts. Just because you don't like their donuts, doesn't entitle you to insult or harass them. Do not bring politics, religion, or other non-donut related content to this community. This community is strictly non-political. If you have an issue with someone's comment or post, please report it.

Wrap Up

So I'm going to go ahead and wrap this up for now. I want y'all to know I look forward to serving y'all as a moderator here at r/donuts. Be on the look out for more announcements and updates in the future from the mod team. Let's share our love donuts together and post an obscene amount of delicious donuts!

Welcome to the new r/donuts y'all!

Regional question about long johns.

I’m an ohian and just made a trip to chicago. Was shocked to learn that none of the long johns had cream filling. Is the cream filling an ohio unique thing or is the lack of it a chicago unique thing?

Finally tried the Donas Del Sol truck in Centro Histórico. Lives up to the hype.

Usually I dont buy from the food trucks in the center because too much tourist y expensive, but this smell so good.

We buy three flavors. The cinnamon one is okay but a little dry, you need drink water or Jarritos. The coconut one was my friend favorite he eaten it so fast before I can take the other picture, only left the grease on the paper haha.

For me the chocolate and the nuts is the best . It is very big and heavy, we cut it in half to share it because too much sweet for only one person. Taste it like a cake or brownie inside.

Come visit the new donut subreddit!

Hey y’all, as everyone already knows, this sub is being overrun with bots and AI content. Unfortunately, the moderator for this sub is nowhere to be found… and even though I am a moderator for a 300k+ member food sub, the Reddit admins denied me from taking over this sub as well.

So I made r/WeLoveDonuts! Please come join us there, I am an active moderator so you don’t need to worry about bots, spam, AI, or anything like that. Please share your content there to help it pick up steam so we can have a donut space that doesn’t have tons of bots!
