Skyhold Silliness

I get so lazy in Skyhold and instead of running around I just jump off things. It just occurred to me today how insane it would look from Solas’ POV. Inky jumps down through the tower from Leliana’s level and just splats in the middle of his floor a few times a day. 😂

What went wrong with writing of Veilguard?

I mean, after my research on who were the writers team of Veilguard, I came to know that so many are experienced and already written best stuff in Inquisition, mass effect games. The best example is Trick Weekes. I honestly felt shocked that they were the lead writer of tresspasser and who written solas and also lead writer of Veilguard who written Taash. I'm so confused. Ironically Krem (who is a fan fav trans-man character of many long time dragon age players) also written by them. Yes, Weekes is non-binary, but how they thought that those pronouns and things like "Pull up a Bharv" would work in Thedas culture? And this is just one example. Some other veteran writers of Dragon Age also involved in writing team of veilguard.

So many blame the development team and management, but atleast not even 10 lines of dialogues is worth experiencing when it comes to Veilguard Companions.

DA2, When should I do the DLC missions?

Either I get the most out of the content or it makes the most sense narratively.

Edit: I love how practically no one is talking about the Exiled Prince.

replaying Cole's personal quest while knowing Solas's history

I've been replaying DA:I recently, and just hit Cole's personal quest. I haven't played Veilguard yet BUT did read through various summaries and meta posts once I realized I wouldn't be able to get to it anytime soon, because I'm impatient and nosey.

So, knowing that Solas was originally a spirit that became more "human"/mortal/physical, it brought a bunch more depth to that quest and Solas's position. While the Inquisitor doesn't know better, as a player I got to see him as much less know-it-all Fade-obsessed and more traumatized and projecting his own regrets and fears onto Cole. Made me wish that the human/spirit choice was one of the things considered in the world state going into Veilguard!!

I'm curious if anyone (who's actually played through Veilguard) has any thoughts about this, or any other things about Solas in Inquisition that have more depth after learning more about his history??

Reflecting on Project: Morrison

Okay, so personally, I think that the cobbled-together frankenstein of a game that is Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a hot mess. There's definitely some likeable things going on here, but to me, there is just sooo much about the game we got that drives me up a wall. I'm talking the mechanics, dialogue writing, story, and world-building all just generally grind my gears, which makes the parts I do like all the more intriguing. The basic premise of the story--a ragtag remnant/renegades of the Inquisition join up with a group of companions to explore northern Thedas on the hunt for Solas and end up facing down the evil of the Evanuris--is very good. I'm not sure how much of it came from Project: Joplin, but from what we know about Joplin, it seems close.

Regardless, Joplin was canned along with any actual code that had begun to be written for it, and we know that the majority of the final build of DA:V was, at least mechanically, mostly from Project: Morrison. Project: Morrison was an MMO, and a lot of what I dislike about DA:V is the ways in which it feels like a rushed MMO. If you've played a lot of fantasy MMO's before--like the really cheap ones!--I think you'll know what I mean. The factions, the world-building, the quests are all reminiscent of poorly made online multiplayer games. But here's the thing: not all online multiplayer games are poorly made.

After playing DA:I and bouncing off my first playthrough of DA:V, I tried the Throne and Liberty MMO. I loved it and still continue to play it semi-regularly even after the new has worn off. This made me realize something. I really, honestly, truly think that if a Dragon Age MMO had been wholeheartedly committed to--a classic fantasy MMO set in the World of Thedas using the mechanics of DA:I--it would have been fine, maybe even good! Think about BioWare's own past with MMO's (not including Anthem). SW:TOR and Neverwinter Nights were both long running, mostly successful MMO's that did a lot to bring life to the worlds they were written for (Star Wars and the Forgotten Realms). SW:TOR still received support from BioWare until 2023! Modders still make content for Neverwinter Nights 24 years later! Beyond BioWare, think about WoW, ESO, Neverwinter, and Throne and Liberty! The best MMO's keep playerbases a live for decades! If they had committed to make the best World of Thedas MMO possible, I can imagine it being great to play, especially with the base classes/species and mechanics of Inquisition. The framing device could have been working as an agent of the Inquisition, but allowed you to join any factions you wanted to. PC's could own castles, run dungeons, maybe even do PvP! Idk, that shit just doesn't sound half bad to me. Am I crazy?

When did solas start wandering Thedas?

I tried looking it up but couldn't find anything helpful? I'm trying to make a timeline for a project and my problem is that Solas lies. A lot. In veilguard, where hes not hiding his identity, he doesn't seem to specify any amount of years. Does anyone know of another Source that has info? Is there anything in the comics?

Spiritual succesors

So
It's been a lot on my mind lately
Just finished all of DA:O and it's DLC's and it got me thinking
Will there or is there a Dragon age succesor?
Some other franchise thats inspired by it or smth?
I love the world but sadly the chances of anyone getting their hands on the IP are slim and I don't see EA making another game
Do you know of anything?
Would you want another game merging magic, intruige and the Blight?
I am slowly making progress on my passion project which is a mix of star wars and the witcher to put it simply, but Dragon age is near and dear to my heart. So is horror so I'm thinking of adding Blight of some kind to it.
Thoughts? Recommedations? Wishes?

DAO dialogue vs DAI

I started DAI recently and stuck with it for a while, but the more I played, the more fed up I got with the dialogue until I just dropped it. I kept trying to push through thinking it might eventually click, but it never really did. For a moment I was just pushing myself to enjoy the dialogue and convince myself that it was good. Now I’m playing DAO and it’s like night and day, it became very clear that I didn't think DAI was that good at all.

DAO actually feels like I’m role-playing instead of just picking different tones for the same character. I can actually decide what kind of person my little guy is, and the game runs with it. I find myself talking to every NPC just because the conversations are actually interesting and it feels like I’m shaping my character through them. DAI dialogue just felt so bland in comparison. Brand-friendly, a bit Marvel-esque, has that early 2010s action/adventure movie vibe that I kinda hate. And the Inquisitor never really felt like mine, if that makes sense. More like I was steering a predefined character than actually building one, like trying hard to fit a square into a triangular hole.

DAO, just completely clicks with me it's so unique lol. It's like a blend of Pillars of eternity 2 and the quirkiness of Divinity Original Sin 2. Two of my favorite RPGs. It gives you that feeling that your character is something you define through choices, not something the game hands you.

It’s funny how I started DAI because it was more modern-looking, but that almost 20 years old clunky looking little game hooks me way more than DAI ever did.

A Dalish HoF has it ROUGH in DA2

Playing DA2 for the first time since it came out. My HoF was a female Dalish elf.

Just... damn. Keeper's dead. Merrill doing blood magic shit. Pol's dead (poor Pol, I liked him) - it's just kind of tragic if you think about it. I liked to think your Dalish clan just moved on and was okay. Nope. Pain.

Also DA2 as a whole is fucking dark and I kind of forgot about that. Still traumatized from "All that Remains".

EDIT: spelling

Is this a controversial take? Dual Wield Rogue gameplay is far superior in DA2 then it is in DA:I.

The snappiness of the auto-attack animations and how they allowed you to stick to your opponents, along with the abilities you unlocked later in the game, made the minute to minute gameplay of the DA2 Rogue far better then DA:I.

The main thing I remember from my DA:I DW Rogue playthrough was all the times my auto-attacks whiffed because of a slight difference in elevation between my enemy and I, or the enemy character deciding to move away ever so slightly.

The one change I'd make if I'd have been in the writers' room

Hi, so this is something I think about everytime I go back and play Inquisition and I thought I'd share it here: I think the #1 biggest change I would have made to the 3rd and 4th games in DA would be to make Hawke the Inquisitor. I honestly think the entire story would have just been better if Hawke had been the one to intervene at the Conclave, stolen the Orb from Corypheus, then learned how to close rifts with it from Solas. Drop the whole "Herald of Andraste" thing and focus on the role of the Inquisitor itself from the beginning, having the conflict of who gets the role between Hawke, Leliana, and Cassandra mean a lot more by the time you get to Act 2. Ik how unpopular this idea might be, especially with the Solvellans, but I think that it would have just been a better transition from DA2 and removed a lot of the more convoluted aspects of Inquisition's plot besides. I'd also continue the retcon into Veilguard and make Hawke the protag of that game as well.

Hawke was just that kind of protagonist who I feel could have really carried the spirit of the franshise across all its iterations. Ik that being not being able to play as other species was a big complaint going from DA:O to DA2, but imo, I think that move was a definitive one in the franchise. Even in DA:I and DA:V, playing as other species just doesn't really impact the experience as much as it did in DA:O. The only real exception to that was playing as a fem elf because of the Solas romance, which ugh I get it, is good, but, at least imo, isn't as good as a better post-DA2 franchise could have been with a more consistent roleplay experience a la Mass Effect/Shepherd. To me, that just seemed to be BioWare's sweet spot at the time and I wished they'd leaned into it as much with DA as they had with ME, because of all the things people complain about in ME, Shepherd ain't one of them and I think the same can be said for Hawke with only 1/3 the amount of character development compared to Shepherd.

I understand romances and companions in DAI would have been much different, but personally, I wouldn't make many changes to the cast. If Hawke had a dedicated romance with anyone from the DA2 cast that didn't show back up, then it'd have been easy enough to reference them in a wartable mission. It makes sense for them to be absent. Anders is either on the run or dead, Fenris is hunting mages in Tevinter, Sebastian's ruling Starkhaven, Merrill is helping the elves in Kirkwall's alienage, and Isabella is... Isabella. Having Carver, Bethany, or even Anders be the Warden who helps in Inquisition would have been a SICK call-back and made the choice in "Here lies the Abyss," a lot different, but I think also a lot more meaningful, especially if the choice had been between one of the aforementioned DA2 wardens and a DA1 warden like Alistair, Loghain, or Nathaniel, all of whom might have had different philosophies about the order and thus impacts on the future of the order going into Veilguard. Of course, that'd be nice if Veilguard had chosen to include the outcome of this mission at all, which it didn't -_-

As for Veilguard, I think the cast was mostly fine with a couple of exceptions. 1) Merrill would have been much better as a returning character filling the same role and even having a very similar narrative as Bellara (kind of weird how similar they already are are, tbh.); 2) make the mage-hunter Fenris! Like seriously. If we must have a Crow companion, I'd have really liked Zevran more than a new character, but as long as we drop the abomination angle, Lucanis was fine. Honestly, everyone else was pretty good. I even think a lot of Taash's rougher edges would have been made much more interesting to engage with just by virtue of the protag being Hawke, what with all his experiences with the Qun (in this timeline, including Iron Bull AND Trespasser). Finally, everything with Varric in Veilguard would have been sooo much more gut-punching playing as Hawke. The end. Rant over. Proceed with my public execution.

EDIT: Honorable mention to switching Harding out for Dagna! As much as I like Harding, that whole story just works sooo much better for Dagna

what are your personal retcons/meta-lores?

I've been recently replaying inquisition with a new inquisitior build and being somewhat completionist (fuck the shards). I've been building out a bit of a custom lore to justify certain choices I'm making. I've been really curious to hear what other people have in mind when they make certain game choices! How do they justify things within the limitations of dai roleplaying, how do different inquisitor builds change these choices, etc etc.

For myself: I didn't go to the western approach until after the winter palace, because "we needed stability in the empire before we could move forces west". I also didn't do the winter palace until after I'd completed the exalted plains and the emprise du lion (up until the war table missions), and most of the emerald graves (fuck the giants), because "we needed to contribute to stability in the empire/regarding the civil war before we would be invited to the winter palace". I'm romancing bull, but did not give him the necklace until after adamant despite having it already crafted because it's the trauma of the fade that made my inquisitor ready to commit (and so that their romance scenes would be marginally more spaced out). I didn't leave the hinterlands until after I had completed everything pre-war table to get dennet's horses for the inquisition.

Is there a good way to play Dragon Age: Origins w/ Controller on PC?

I’m not playing it otherwise. I wish I could refund it but I bought it a long time ago because I knew it was on Xbox so I foolishly assumed it had controller support. I don’t play games with KB&M and I’m not starting now so is there a way to do it or did I waste my money?

Edit: Whelp, thx for the comments regardless. I guess I’m glad I didn’t waste my money or Dragon Age 2 or Inquisition at least. Sucks 🫤

Dragon Age 4 fanfic help

So I have been thinking of making a sort of fanfic about Dragón Age 4, with the idea starting with a conversation with a friend about "How would You have Made Dragón Age 4?"

So right now I'm making a document about it to have a better idea before i get to work on it, starting with things from the past games that could affect this one

But right now i'm stuck with the section of the characters, both who or what could be the MC, but also the theme of the companions.

Each of the games there is a sort of theme to the companions that join You. Maybe not so much the first one unless i'm mistaken, but the second one i felt the companions had this theme of imprisonment, Freedom, and responsabilities and consequences.

Inquisition meanwhile the companions are all professionals. They have connections, information, resources that they can offer the inquisition. Even Será who is the younges one is part of a organization that can help the inquisition and she grows into a leadership position

So im thinking, what would be a good theme for the characters in the fourth one? My brother suggest something like Bad guys doing good, but that feels a Lot like suicide squad.

So, uh, Thanks for your attention, and i Will welcome any suggestion

Lace Harding, why?

Okay, so I don’t care for Lace Harding. I will also preface everything by saying that I have played all the dragon age games (I haven’t played every DLC for them, but I have played all four of the mainline games) Veilguard was the first game I played for the series. I really liked it when I first played it. Going back and playing all the other games in the series has changed that opinion since. When playing Veilguard however, I didn’t like Harding. Honestly I wasn’t sure why, but I just didn’t care for her. Looking back now a lot of the Veilguard companions lacked flair but Lace even more so. I didn’t really understand the titan plot line with the stolen dreams of the titans being the blight or the taint. I felt so lost, and the way that the dwarf plot line was handled, wasn’t even handled really.

So, when I went back I replayed all the games (I accidentally played them out of order.) I got to see more of the dwarves story and it made me understand Lace even less. In inquisition going to new areas and having to talk to her honestly felt annoying to me. But then in Inquisition I met Dagna, as the archanist, I thought she was hilarious and her studying magic despite not being able to experience it from being a dwarf was absolutely fascinating to me. When I played Origins for the first time and was doing the quest to help her go to the circle, I thought she was amazing. The sacrifice of giving up your entire life in the place you were raised to go study something you will never be able to experience was truly remarkable. Her character had so much potential.

I think having Dagna act as the Dwarven companion in Veilguard would have been a better choice. She was fascinated by the fade already, she studied it extensively, and the idea that she wouldn’t help Varric go after Solas just to see what was happening? Not to mention she was from Orzammar, the largest of the two real remaining Dwarven civilizations. Her connection to the stone was already there, Lace was a surface dwarf. Her connection to the titans and dwarven history felt almost forced. Also Lace gains the stone ability from extensive time near the dagger, but if you play as Dwarf rook you spend the same time near the dagger and don’t obtain the same abilities?

I know a lot of my frustrations are mostly due to the poor story choices made in Veilguard. They didn’t handle the lore properly, or much of the game as a whole properly. I do still stand strong on my opinion that it would have been far more interesting to have a dwarf companion with more knowledge on the veil, and a larger cultural connection to the stone and dwarven history. I’d love to hear other opinions on the matter because I know my bias clouds a bit of my judgement on the matter.

[Origins] Are there any mods to make levelled weapons max tier?

I can't tell you how disheartening it is to get all excited for Alistair to use Maric's blade, just to find that it's weaker than the weapon he was already equipped with.

I'm not even rushing to get to the DLC or anything, it just lags behind.
