I just bought a 1983 520i and i knew these weren’t fuel efficient but it seems excessive, i drove it around 70-80km total of city driving till now and its somehow used up 25L of fuel. I don’t think this is normal. The car does not smoke at all and the engine doesn’t seem weak and no fuel leaks are present as when the car is left in the garage no fuel puddles or any scent of fuel is present so i don’t know where all this fuel is going. I did not drive it with a heavy foot and only did like 2-3 short pulls less then 10s to confirm the engine is strong. The transmission is a 3 speed automatic. Do you guys know what could cause this horrendous fuel consumption?

I bought a 1986 535i with a “ran recently” engine.

I brought it home, changed oil, oil filter, coolant, spark plugs, and spark plug wires. I cranked the engine and coolant came out the exhaust.

I did a coolant compression test and brought compression to 10psi and saw the pool of coolant growing in the cylinder. I wasn’t able to see where it was leaking in from.

Borescope in the cylinders showed pools of coolant. Compression test came out with 127, 73, 75, 85, 95, 115.

ChatGPT is suggesting I inspect the intake manifold.

I’m pretty new to engine work, but can to most maintenance. People who actually know engines, what else should I actually look at or just replace?
