Do most people book their Fringe shows in advance, or do you decide once you're actually in Edinburgh?

Do most people book their Fringe shows in advance, or do you decide once you're actually in Edinburgh?

This will be our first time bringing our show EXIT to the Edinburgh Fringe, so I'm curious how audiences actually plan their visit.

Do you map everything out weeks beforehand, or do you leave room for recommendations, reviews and spontaneous discoveries?

I'd love to hear how people approach it!

Ensemble based physical/clown/experimental theatre?

Obviously this is a function partially of the economics of the Fringe but there are a ton of solo shows.

Anyone know good devised ensemble shows out there? Clown/physical/experimental preferred?

Im thinking of shows like My Love Lies Frozen in The Ice (2019), Silent Faces (A Clown Show about Rain, Godot is a Woman), or PLEASE LEAVE (a message) by ClusterFlux

How bad is the first week of August this year visiting Edinburgh?

I have reserved hotel for 6 nights at $2400 (£1800), flight, and highlands day tour accommodations in Edinburgh for Aug 1-7 and I don’t have much of a choice since its my bday and I go back to uni Aug 31 (I’m from America).

I’m excited but I keep reading on other reddit forums and Tik Tok that August is the worst time to visit due to the Fringe so I’m having second thoughts. I guess what I wanna know is will the crowds prevent me from getting a quick bite to eat at a nice cafe like Milkman or getting on my tour bus? I also won’t be having a rental as I will be walking from my hotel in old town, exploring the city, and checking out places like Calton Hill and Deans Village.

I don’t mind crowds but I just don’t want it to be physically disruptive. Plus I’m going solo so it might add to my ambience but even though I’m fairly passable as a trans woman, it still gives me anxiety if someone will have a vendetta against me. I wanna hear your thoughts/suggestions. Bad idea? Thank you!

Our first Ed Fringe!

We've finally finalised our Fringe schedule after cramming the planning session when we found out last minute we wont be able to make our June UK trip!

On the day of our flight last June 5, we had to cancelled our trip and, since we were super upset, spent that night replanning an August trip instead where we remembered that Ed Fringe was on that month as well!

We're big fans of British panel shows, TaskMaster, and boardgames so being able to fill our schedule with comedians we adore is quite exciting. Tickets bought, hotel and train booked, the only thing left to do is contain our excitement until mid-August (which is not an easy fit!)

Anyway, this is our schedule. Did we go a bit overboard? 🤔😅

Best non-fringe non-obvious things to check out?

We'll be at the festival for a week, and while I'd normally not bug people and just do my own research, but my brain is already fried trying to make sense of all these shows, so I'm coming to you, people of the internet, in my hour of need. What are some of the non-performance art things that edinburgh has to offer that are must sees while we're in town? We're generally much more interested in local culture than tourist traps or anything Harry Potter related.

Any idea when more shows will be on sale?

There’s at least one act I know for sure will be performing that wasn’t in the printed programme and still not showing online. Anyone know if from now on there are any more mass release dates or things will just appear? They’re likely to be at a fairly established venue (Underbelly for the last three years for example).

Is C venue a good place to volunteer? / any suggestions for volunteer venues?

Hi, im a theatre enthusiast from the states, and ive always wanted to experience edinburgh fringe. I saw that C venue is looking for volunteers, and since they provide accommodation, it seems like a great way to get started.
Has anyone here volunteered or worked at C venues? I’d love to hear about your experience. Also, if you have any recommendations for other good places to volunteer at the fringe, I’d really appreciate them!

First Time Fringe

Hi there Reddit. I’m coming to the fringe for the first time. I’m only going to be in Edinburgh for 4 full days before roadtripping around Scotland. As I’m planning and booking some tickets I’m realizing the coordination of the shows times and distance is a big limitation on how much I can squeeze in. So far I’m trying to allocate 40-60 minutes in between shows.

A few questions:

  1. Typically, how early do venues start letting people in? Should you plan to get there first thing for decent seats or does it not make too much of a difference if most venues are smaller?
  2. Do shows typically start and end on time?
  3. Do artists (comedians) do any photo opp/merch table at the end? Thinking about if I need to rush out of a theater if I have a limited window.
  4. How many shows would you consider an effective use of the fringe? I’m trying to target 10 shows in 4 days.
  5. Open to recommendations! So far I have Daniel Sloss, Krystyna Hutchinson, Gianmarco Sorresi, Yvette Sagan and Kristen Schall booked. Trying to squeeze in some more British comedians or interesting plays/musicals

I built a free digital program/cast-list tool for Fringe, looking for shows to try it

I built a digital program that I had intended for anyone to use, but I realized it could be especially good for Fringe shows.

I added in all 300+ Fringe venues to the database, so you can just select your venue and enter all of your show credits: performers, creative team, and staff.

Each show gets a QR code. Just print it out, paste it on the door, and anyone seeing your show can scan it for a full list of credits and links to your online socials and websites.

Everyone with a credit gets a rich profile (if they want), with a 1,000 word bio, 10 photos, YouTube & TikTok embeds, social links and more. It's a way for everyone on the show to be remembered, long after Fringe ends.

It's completely free to use. I'm building lots of cool features as users request them, and I've got a few more coming in the next couple of weeks that I think will be even more impactful for Fringe shows this year.

Would love for anyone presenting a show at Fringe to give it a shot and let me know what you think, including any feature requests.

Enjoy!

Looking for comedians bringing shows to the Edinburgh Fringe

Hi everyone,

My name's Ruairí and I'm launching a new comedy interview podcast called Tickets Still Available.

The idea came from the fact that every Fringe has hundreds of brilliant shows competing for attention. I'd love to speak to comedians about the show they're bringing to Edinburgh, how it came together, what audiences can expect, and the experience of taking a show to the Fringe.

As well as talking about the show itself, I'm interested in the places comedians perform and the towns and cities they visit. That side of the podcast is loosely inspired by Mark Steel's in Town, exploring what makes a place unique and how it can influence a performance or simply provide a good story.

The conversations are informal and recorded remotely, so you don't need a professional setup. If you're travelling and only have your phone available, that's absolutely fine. If video isn't possible, we can simply use a headshot instead.

A little about me: I've been producing The More Freedom Foundation Podcast for over three years, so I'm comfortable with long-form interviews. If you'd like to get a feel for me in a more comedy-focused setting, I also appeared on episode 135 of the WTFDYW?! Podcast, where we discussed the Australian film Wake in Fright.

If you're taking a show to the Fringe and fancy a relaxed chat about it, I'd love to hear from you.

You can contact me at:

ticketsstillavailable@gmail.com

Happy to answer any questions in the comments, too.

Trying to remember a comedian I saw in 2019.

Hi all. Looking for some help. My friend and I are trying to remember the name of a comedian we saw at the festival back in 2019. He was a sort of Surrealist/absurdist type comedian, he had a 3 part name, like John Paul Something, or similar. I think he was playing a run of shows in the same venue, there is something in the back of my head saying he may have had 2 different shows running, but not sure. He was playing in the university venues somewhere around George Square, and I remember the day we saw him, Eddie Izzard had done, or was doing a surprise show in the theatre next door, and that was written on like a marque sign on the building. Any ideas?
