Claiming the translation is not an actual translation but an interpretation
What if one of the most influential translations in the Quran isn't actually a translation, but an interpretation?
The word qawwam used throughout the Quran to describe standing, maintaining, establishing, and supporting. Yet when it appears in relation to men and women, many translations suddenly give it a meaning of authority.
Why?
In this video, I follow the word through the Qur'an and explain why I don't believe qawwam means "authority over women." If Allah intended to establish male authority, why is that meaning absent everywhere else this root appears?
Don't take my word for it. Open the Quran, follow the root, and decide for

It’s everything except Islam that gets all the credit and none of the liability 🤦🏾♀️
Islam was feminist before feminism existed
I heard some people saying that Islam is inherently misogynistic but I think that's because they judge a 7th-century religion by 21st-century standards while ignoring the historical context.
So when Islam emerged, women were granted rights that many societies simply didn't recognize. Women could own property, inherit wealth, keep their own money after marriage, choose whether to marry, seek divorce under certain conditions, receive a dowry that belonged exclusively to them and even run businesses. Khadijah, the Prophet Muhammad's first wife was a wealthy merchant long before modern feminism existed.
Ironically many of the people who call Islam anti-women ignore the fact that some of these rights reached Europe centuries later.
The bigger issue isn't Islam itself it's patriarchy. Over the centuries male-dominated cultures and political powers shaped religious interpretations to reinforce their own authority. Many practices people call "Islamic" today are arguably products of patriarchal traditions rather than the religion's original principles.
So maybe the real question isn't "Is Islam misogynistic?" but "How much of what we call Islam today is actually culture disguised as religion?"
One last point, i've often heard Muslim men say that it's impossible to be both Muslim and a feminist. I completely disagree with that. If feminism means believing that women deserve dignity, justice, education, safety and equal worth before God then those values are entirely compatible with Islam.
What is not compatible with Islam is using religion as an excuse to oppress women and children. When I look at places like Afghanistan where girls are denied an education and women are stripped of their most basic freedoms in the name of religion. I don't see Islam, I see oppression hiding behind religion. As human beings we shouldn't be able to watch these atrocities unfold in silence.
To say "I'm not a feminist" while comfortably enjoying rights that millions of women fought for rights that many women and girls around the world still don't have feels deeply contradictory. If we truly believe in justice then our responsibility doesn't end with enjoying our own freedoms. We should also speak up for those who are still denied theirs.
Being a feminist isn't about hating men or rejecting religion. It's about refusing to accept injustice wherever it happens and whoever it affects.
