Gary Dauberman Writing FNAF 3 May Be A Problem (see desc)

Gary Dauberman's most praised work is It (2017), however this may not be the true testament of a writer that some FNAF fans seem to think it is. Let's walk through his pros and cons as a screenwriter first.

Pros:

- He seems to know what mass audiences want out of a Friday night horror movie. His work is highly accessible and consistently profitable. This is commercially good for the studio; it makes sense why Blumhouse would hire him amidst criticisms while still eyeing profit.

Anabelle Comes Home (2019)

Domestic Gross: $74,152,000

Worldwide Total: $231,252,591

Anabelle (2014)

Domestic Gross: $84,273,813

Worldwide Total: $257,047,661

Until Dawn (2025)

Domestic Gross: $20,172,192

Worldwide Total: $54,105,064

The Nun (2018)

Domestic Gross: $117,481,222

Worldwide Total: $366,082,797

It (2017)

Domestic Gross: $328.87 million

Worldwide Total: $719.76 million

It: Chapter Two (2019)

Domestic Gross: $211,593,228

Worldwide Total: $473,093,228

- He's able to create iconic standalone entities. The best example is obviously Pennywise in It (2017), especially with the projector jumpscare sequence. This is great news for FNAF 3 since Springtrap—a zombified animatronic creature—is the main antagonist.

- He's experienced in working in a horror franchise (The Conjuring Universe and the "It" movies). And he's great at playing in a shared sandbox (we'll get to that later).

Cons:

- He uses formulaic scare tactics (silence, a slow camera pan, a false relief, and then an explosive auditory and visual jump scare). His over-reliance on these traditional jumpscare setups can make his films feel incredibly predictable, especially if you're a horror fan. Anabelle (2014) is the primary evidence for this. Rushed into production to cash in on The Conjuring, the script is a textbook example of "generic studio horror". It leans heavily on predictable, loud-noise jump scares, a paper-thin plot, and characters making frustratingly cliché horror-movie decisions.

- Mechanical dialogue due to expository myth-building. His characters often function as conduits for lore. A massive portion of his dialogue is dedicated to explaining the "rules" of the monster, the cursed object, or the environment. The FNAF movies already has this problem, and we don't need him to exacerbate it.

- When tackling dense or non-traditional source material, he tends to strip away nuance in favor of simpler, broad cinematic horror tropes. A disappointing evidence of this is the Until Dawn (2025) movie.

Finally let's get to It.

Most fans were ecstatic to learn that Gary Dauberman is the official screenwriter for FNAF 3, as he is well-known for writing the film adaptation of It and helping bring Pennywise to life. But what they don't acknowledge is that he didn't write It from scratch. He was hired to rework the original screenplay that was previously written by Cary Fukunaga and Chase Palmer before they left.

There is a massive difference between a writer who builds a house from the ground up and a writer who moves in and renovates.

Fukunaga and Palmer did the heavy lifting of figuring out how to split Stephen King’s massive novel into a two-part structure with the first one being focused on the characters as children. Their drafts were the foundation for the final script. Without this structural foundation, the movie might have looked very different and inhabited the flaws that we later see in It: Chapter Two with Dauberman being the sole writer.

However, Fukunaga’s vision was far more eccentric and less mainstream, which caused major creative differences with the studio. Dauberman's rewrites are what actually injected the film with its pacing, emotional stakes, and crowd-pleasing tension (as far as we can see).

Take the opening alone. In Fukunaga's draft, Georgie and Pennywise talk for a single page before the kill. The interaction felt quick and personally unsatisfying. Dauberman, on the other hand, stretched it into 3-4 minutes of agonizing suspense.

His work in this movie proved that he is great at refining a script and showcased the best of him as a collaborator. However the sequel It: Chapter Two exposed his limitations when left entirely to his own devices as the sole credited screenwriter. The script suffers from structural and conceptual flaws. Exploring this will honestly need its own post, so just watch the movie yourself and compare it with the first movie.

When Dauberman has a strong existing blueprint to constrain him, he can sharpen dialogue, heighten emotional stakes, and deliver a tight commercial product that pleases the crowd and generates revenue. But when he is handed total creative control over a massive canvas, he defaults to repeating a formulaic pattern until the runtime runs out, which proves that he struggles to build a solid story on his own. This is concerning for FNAF 3. Because:

A. it's a closing sequel to a trilogy

B. he's a solo writer for the movie. And, if he does have a co-pilot offering him advice, it'll probably be Scott Cawthon, and we know he's not really a great writer for movies…

In summation, Gary is kind of like Scott. He's inconsistent and he needs guidance. I think we've seen this film before.

What happens if William Afton’s live-action actor from the Movies read the book In the Flesh?

What would his reaction be? The guy in the book shared the same name as Afton’s actor and Game Theories.

Do you think Micheal Afton will get a Sister Location backstory in the third film?

I was wondering if Micheal Afton will get some type of backstory in the third movie, since he’s a pretty mysterious character in the second movie with little backstory

Is Charlotte the new vengeful spirit?

Charlotte shares a lot in common with Cassidy. Both seem to be vengeful spirits, (albeit for different reasons). Both died horrific deaths at the hands of the Yellow Rabbit, and both possess Fazbear animatronics.

I have to feel for Charlotte, and what she endured. I wish things could have been different, and that the adults felt bad about not helping the girl out.

It's still hard to get my head around the fact that the Charlotte is so powerful to not only possess the Marionette, but seemingly the entire building, including all of the other animatronics. I often think about how Toy Freddy, Toy Bonnie, Toy Chica, Mangle, and Balloon Boy would just be inanimate animatronics without the Marionette having control over them.

Maybe Charlotte went on to possess those original people off-screen. Who knows? I'm still waiting for the third movie to potentially reveal what happened to those people.

What do yall look forward to in the FNAF IP?

Recently I been struggling to find a reason to be interested in fnaf. Yea I love the fnaf fan games, fan artists and merch, but the official games I’m lost some interest in. Then modern fnaf lore I hate a lot, and the fact my goat vanny is cut content personified is so annoying.

I did enjoy the first fnaf movie, while second one it’s okay. It’s a decent live action twisted ones with a fnaf 2 skin on it. But third movie with its 3 story plots in a hour and half movie might not do great. But hey I hope yall enjoy it.

I wish I could be as hyped for fnaf like I use to but modern fnaf lore really did a number on my enjoyment. If you love the mimic then that’s fine, I’m glad someone enjoys the fnaf mimic timelines.

The ending makes no sense

I don't understand the ending, specifically the big reveal of Micheal scene.

He shows up and tells Vanessa to join him to finish their father's legacy

But Vanessa refuses and pulls out Fast and Furious "I have family" card WITH Mike and Abby watching the whole thing

Literally picking their side over Micheal's

But instead, Mike just "nah, screw you, don't come near us" and pushes her away basically

Yes, she didn't mentioned Mike about Micheal as well as Charlie's death.

But he's also in the wrong for straight up saying that he'll fix her in front of her face. (Mightve been better if he said 'help you' instead of 'fix you' imo)

Mike also decides to push the one person who's been helping him in both 1 and 2.

Now Mike will probably have to work at Universal Horror Night after hours for a horror maze based off the murders at Freddy's Pizzeria that has only one animatronic while having Vietnam flashbacks of BalloonBoy and others with no help from Vanessa, since she's possessed by Charlie and probably going to haunt Abby while she's going to make friends with Circus Baby who actually has the soul of Vanessa and going to protect Abby from Charlie. How is Vanessa in Circus Baby's body? idk, unless there's actually another secret sibling (Elizabeth) who's actually in Circus Baby. But that's just a theory, A FILM THEORY. (more like a prediction than a theory though . _.)

Random Hopes for the FNaF3 movie (some of these may be hot takes don’t bully me)

Hope 1. Make Springtrap SUPER expressive. give make him talk, blink, and squint, I want it to feel like Lillard is leaking into the suit.

Hope 2. I don’t want more Gore or Blood or even a high body count. I want more shadow play kills. FNaF 1’s bite scene was gold, I loved it. Make a scene where see a pizza knife go into a dudes head in the shadow, or an axe perhaps.

Hope 3. If a character goes unconscious, let them go in and out of consciousness and we see scenes of their POV being dragged.

Hope 4. Don’t apologize, stop being self aware, please do not. Lean into absurdity. I loved FNaF 1, I loved FNaF 2 even more, but I was so disappointed that FNaF 2 did not make Withered Foxy jump. This time around, make them jump, make them scream. Be unapologetic, be unhinged.

Hope 5. Keep sister location in the backseat, leave them as mysterious cameos for when the inevitable sister location movie comes out.

Hope 5. A montage shot exactly the same as the FNaF 2 opening where we show the kids and how they ended up where they are? I don’t even care if you don’t do the other hopes.

Hope 6. Lefty Catches Vanessa, not much to say here.

Hope 7. I want more of that dramatic blue lighting we got In the interior of the FNaF 2 building.

Hope 8. Everyone says we need “more screen time“ for Springtrap or any of the animatronics. While I don’t disagree, I want QUALITY screen time. The withereds had little screen time, but their screen time was well utilized, their sequence was really cool.

Hope 9. If there’s another fight sequence (another fight sequence with Mike Schmidt would be awesome!) Make it last at least 5-10 minutes.

Hope 10. Make the movie more tactile. Hear me out. The scenes that worked best for me:

- FNaF 1 being strapped to chair.

-FNaF 1, Cupcake on man’s face

-FNaF 1, Freddy Chomp

-FNaF 1, springlock scene, slow and poky, very uncomfortable!

- FNaF 2, Mangle grabs kid by neck, can you imagine the cold?

- FNaF 2, Toy Chica Head crush….that whole sequence??? Crawling on the floor? Glass shards? Gosh.

- FNaF 2, First possession scene, riveting.

- FNaF 2, Mike falling down into the withereds domain, feeling the boxes, grabbing his flashlight and seeing the withered animatronics? So creepy.

(To summarize, the movie could feel much more brutal with its pg-13 rating if you have the characters touch/feel more. A kill where a man tries to resist and is forced to touch spring traps moldy suit, maybe even gag at the smell, feels infinitely more disturbing than a bloody head punch or something. At least imo.

Am I the only one who thinks the fnaf movies are kind of over hated?

I personally loved them, but maybe that's because i'm not really that deep into the lore? IDK, please give me honest thoughts.

If you're worried about the design of Springtrap's corpse because FNAF 3 is going to be PG-13, let me remind you that Two-Face exists...

I wanna give you guys my take on what I wanna see for the ending of the FNAF 3 Movie I wanna see what you guys think

Before the ending we know that Mike and Henry is using Abby to lure springtrap around (instead of the audio lures in the game) as Vanessa (possessed by the puppet) and Micheal Afton skipping walking into the building. As Mike and his sister Abby is dealing with springtrap and Micheal Henry Emily is trying to bust a pipe for a gas leak when Mike goes to reach in his pocket for the lighter but it's missing. Henry holding it as Henry speaks into the horror attraction speaker (as the score plays the fnaf 3 good ending song) "dear William before everything happened we used to be best of friends I comfort you when you lost Elizabeth and Evan (bite of 83 victim) then what came of you a dark twisted monster a monster for the lust of killing kids even my own fucking daughter because you couldn't handle the greaf of the death of your own children. But then you died in your own murder suit but just like Frankenstein you came back to life but now it's my turn to send you back.. back to fucking hell go to hell William for all the fucking pain and suffering you caused others and me" (as he telling the speach we get flashbacks of them through the years the founding of Fredbears, the lost of William children etc etc) "my daughter if you can hear me I'm sorry I wasn't there to help you I was too caught up with my work i should've paid more attention to my own daughter then my work now please come to dad and let's go home" Mike and Abby runs to the security office seeing Henry holding hands with ghost Charlotte as Mike bang on the glass screaming no begging Henry not to sacrifice himself Henry drops the lighter as fire burns around Henry saying " it's fine Mike thank you for everything" as Mike and Abby escape springtrap is confronting his son Micheal for being such a failure and couldn't compete with his old man as springtrap stabs Micheal Afton as they both get consumed by the fire. Time jump of Mike and Abby (now a teenager) with a healed Vanessa as Mike asked her how she survived being possessed by Charlotte when it killed Lisa and Vanessa said "Charlotte knew she didn't wanna kill me because unlike Lisa I knew Charlotte as a child, so she didn't wanna kill her childhood best friend" . As a single tear goes down her eye as they dropped a bouquet of flowers at Henry and Charlotte grave (killing off Micheal Afton, and Henry Emily means FNAF 3 can be the finale film no more sequels). The credits role with die in a fire then for the post credit scene is compilations of FNAF YouTubers through The years playing the games and mix with behind the scenes of making of FNAF movie 1,2 and 3 with a mix of Scott Cawthon home videos of his son's beta testing FNAF games and other footage we never saw as Scott and the finale scene is ness from the first FNAF movie standing infornt of the burned down Fazbear Fright being interviewed on live tv as he said "some people say it was burned down due to a gas leak but hey that's just a theory a.." before he finished it cuts to the second part of credits and the finale thing we see is text saying "Thank You For Everything -Scott Cawthon".
