Merit scholarship giki vs nust

I was offered merit scholarship at Giki and have to maintain 3+ CGPA to maintain it, I am stuck between NUST CS and GIKI CS, which one would be better if I wanted to go abroad whether it be through masters (scholarship) or as people say that GIKI alumini is very strong and can help in directly working abroad.

What would be the general pros and cons of both unis be aswell?

Advice for freshies worried about communal washrooms

Dw yall I couldn’t swallow the idea of using communal washrooms as well and it was hard in the beginning to adjust and my main concern was the hygiene and smell tbh so what I did was create a dettol solution (60 percent detol and 40 percent water ) and poured it in a spray bottle , so before using the washroom I’d always spray it on the flush thoroughly and dry it with tissue paper that I’d also bring with myself . Like this I atleast knew the flush iam using is disinfected and clean , would give me a some peace of mind . For the smell part I’d just bring an air freshener aur wo karta tha washroom may , so yes ik it sounds a bit annoying to carry these small things with yourself every time while going to the washrooms but it’s worth it. You can buy a small washroom hand basket and keep your soap and these things in it and carry that basket every time u use the washroom. Khwari hai thori si but for me cleanliness mattered way more

Incoming freshman? Here's the guide for you! (hostel, mess, ragging, all of it)

Hey Batch 36 (or whichever batch is reading this in a panic three days before arrival)

Saw a bunch of "what should I expect at GIKI" posts this week so figured I'd just dump everything useful in one place instead of everyone DMing seniors individually. Fair warning, this is long, but it's the stuff that actually matters.

🎒 Packing

Bring more warm clothes than you think you need if you're arriving anytime close to winter. Extension board, universal adapter, and a good lock for your cupboard. Don't overpack, hostel rooms are smaller than you're imagining. (And yeah its dynamic, you can tailor it to your needs and store the progress as well!)

🍽️ Mess

You'll complain about it within the first week, everyone does, it's basically a rite of passage. Figure out your mess timings early so you're not that guy sprinting across campus at 8:59.

🏠 Hostel life

You will not have privacy for a while and that's fine, everyone's in the same boat. Keep your door locked when you're not around, not because GIKI is unsafe, just basic hostel sense. Your roommate is a gamble, you'll either end up best friends or learn to coexist peacefully, both are fine outcomes.

🎭 Societies and inductions

Actually do these, don't skip them out of nerves. It's genuinely how you find your people. Just a heads up, some societies run "informal interviews" that are basically just ragging with a name change, you'll figure out pretty fast which ones are legit and which ones are just messing with freshmen for fun.

😅 Ragging, since everyone asks

It's honestly not the horror story people online make it out to be, most of us went through first year without any real incident. We actually wrote a whole thing on this since so many freshmen ask, worth a read before you stress about it: https://www.gikichronicles.com/posts/QtrMl2M2wzyaYcjwd4wi

TLDR from that post: banter is fine, bullying isn't, know the difference, and save your Warden's number just in case ☎️

📚 General advice

Go to office hours even if you feel dumb doing it. Don't isolate in your room for the first two weeks, force yourself out even when it's awkward. Your GPA in first semester will probably not be what you're used to from FSc/A Levels, that's normal, don't spiral over it 🙏

Also shameless plug but we started a whole blog for GIKI stuff, admission guides, campus life, all of it, if you want more of this kind of content: https://www.gikichronicles.com/

Good luck🫡

Hostel room allotments

Which floor can I expect with the merit position of 800-ish, and is it fine? And which hostel, 11 or 12, kindly, if someone knows, do let me know.

Mechanical Engineering at giki

Hello I’ve been reading many threads in this subreddit and is it really that bad? Like is giki not a good place for mechanical?

What happens on move-in/orientation day if my parents drop me off?

I’m moving in on 29 August, and my parents will be dropping me off. I wanted to know how it usually works for parents on that day.

Do parents normally stay with you during orientation, come with you to your hostel room and help you settle in, etc.? Or do they usually just drop you off, say goodbye, and leave?

Would appreciate hearing what happened for previous students and roughly how long parents stayed.

Changing from Data Science to AI/CS at GIKI — Merit No. 1619

Hi everyone, I got into Data Science at GIKI and my merit number is 1619. I wanted to ask if it’s possible to switch my program to Artificial Intelligence or Computer Science.

Does anyone know what the procedure is? Is the program change possible before classes start, or do I have to join Data Science first and then apply for a transfer later? Also, does it depend on the closing merit for AI/CS or available seats?

Would really appreciate advice from anyone who has gone through this or knows how it works. Thanks!

Research opportunities?

Are there aany research opportunities with professors at GIKI? Universities like lums have professors with huge networks whom u could collaborate with which can help in going for MS abroad. Are giki professors like that. And are there professors with abroad linkages who could give a rec letter?

How is the environment like? And are the misogynistic rules real?

My friend told me that ONLY GIRLS need a gate pass and they have a curfew that ONLY PREVENTS GIRLS from going out of the campus.

And how is the whole environment like? Like how do people dress act, interact e.t.c.

Is it like conservative, somwhwre in the middle or liberal, like in some universities where people are just getting it on in public ( taht kinda gives me the ick)

Ragging? Do girls or guys experience that ?

And ho is it actually. Like life after graduation and life while studying, also can I get na AC in my room??

I have so many questions 😭
